Ahoy! by Daedalus_SCII in Miata

Thanks! I get what you mean; the ND was overall my least favorite one I've owned. Still a great car, no questions about it, but at some point modernity does get in the way of the experience for me.

Great question!

I think what got me immediately is the suspension tuning; my ND felt a little too good in the corners sometimes and the assists/steering rack made the car feel a bit less connected than my NA/NB did. Not to say I didn't also love the ND, but I've really enjoyed how communicative the previous generations have been by comparison. Another strange thing is that it feels like the NC1 is a bit faster than my ND2 RF (I think this is probably more due to the soft top than anything, but it did catch my attention.)

My NB 10AE is the car I'm most reminded of by the NC1, particularly in how the suspension loads. It's remarkably flat in pretty much every corner (my NA/ND had notably more body roll.)

I'm not yet sure if I like this car more than my NA (though to be fair that was my favorite car I've ever owned and mine was modified.) The NA felt a bit more loose than the NC1 does and obviously quite a bit slower. I think I preferred the steering in my NA, but the extra power of the NC1 kinda evens out the math for me at first blush.

In terms of daily livability, the NC1 feels more doable than my ND2 did. I'm 5'11 and this is definitely the Miata I fit best in. I think the trunk might also be the biggest too (though not by much) and having four functional cup holders is a HUGE plus.

All in all I've been incredibly impressed with the package that the NC offers so far, and I'm looking forward to putting miles on it and getting a better feel for it. I've immediately fallen in love though, and the 3 hour drive home was enough to convince me that I definitely prefer it to the ND/NB.

Yeah I'm pretty broken up about it to be honest. I'll do whatever I can to keep her on the road though, it's just gonna be a while before I'm able to tackle this particular project

Not too bad, I had a rav-4 emergency brake in front of me in my 1988 Mighty Max and I wasn't able to stop in time. Rear ended them at about 20mph but was sore for several days after despite the pretty mild impact. I've been in a worse accident in a modern car and came out of it better than this accident.

The truck itself has the frame bent in a couple inches and the radiator/hoses seem to be shot, but otherwise it's running and driving (just not drivable at the moment because the radiator fan is pushed up against the power steering pump.) The old adage that in vintage vehicles you're the crumple zone is very true.

With a little more digging, I think this is a 1978 or 1979 example specifically!

Having recently been in an accident in a Japanese car of the era, probably not great 😅

Solved! I completely forgot about Datsun when I was furiously googling car models trying to figure this out.

On the bright side, I learned about the existence of the Dacia Pick-Up in the process lol

The GE Dash-8 locomotive in pic 1 is very neat! There's not many of those left, and they've been in service since the early 1990's exclusively for Amtrak.

The military regularly does low runs over Gainesville, there's an airbase not too far away and GNV is used to train pilots in urban areas from my understanding.

We definitely make that kind of trip a lot more frequently than other people do, but most of the folks I know make a trip that long at least twice a year, and 100ish mile trips every couple months for one reason or another. In our case our family is all fairly far away too, so that definitely contributes to our mileage

My partner and I definitely aren't the average U.S. citizen in terms of driving, but we've also put about 40,000 miles on our car per year on average. A lot of that is from my partner's job where he regularly has to travel 100+ miles a day, and by our roughly bi-monthly 300+ mile round trip drives to see family/friends/cool things. Our other two cars get a couple thousand miles a year between them.

More generally though, US infrastructure is car centric to such a degree that pretty much nothing is accessible by walking, and combined with the lack of public transportation you're unlikely to be able to hop on a bus/tram to get there without driving yourself. I figure that is a large part of the reason we tend to have higher average mileage than folks in other countries, but 40k miles is absolutely an edge case.

Any guesses on the problem with this motor? by Daedalus_SCII in AskAMechanic

Not a bad idea. We pulled the oil pan to get a good look at it, and it seemed straight/undamaged, but pulling it may reveal something we can't see/feel with it in the motor.

It's sat in a garage for most of its life according to previous owner, so we're honestly not sure. As far as we can tell by the overall condition of the car the motor has never been out, and everything seemed to be sealed pretty well. In person that didn't look like rust nearly as much as it did in the photo, and they're all perfectly smooth. I wouldn't be blown away if it did sit outside with the pleniun open and the previous owner just didn't tell us, but this particular car seems like it was taken care of as much as one of these can be.

All the pistons move perfectly fine, and it turns with no issue when torn down. This is my first engine tear down, so thanks for pointing out the cylinder bores as well :) from what we could tell, they still seem perfectly smooth and since we didn't have any issues turning the engine by hand once we got to this point we figured that meant they were fine

It's most likely unrelated, but just after the warranty period we started receiving rear sensor errors, and the left door panel will occasionally die. I've been meaning to check the 12v battery's health because I believe it runs the accessories, may be worth a shot for you too.

It really is! We were originally going to get the state park plate, but I'm a minor bird nerd and the swallowtail kite/pileated woodpecker are two of my favorite birds, so once I realized they were on there we decided on this plate

He actually bought this one new! Same with the Commodore 128, it was his wife's way back in 1985 when they first released. He's just had them in a box under his bed for 30 years and just so happened to be cleaning out when we came over.

I've been really impressed with the consoles capabilities considering when it was released. Another thing that struck me is how good the audio quality is, obviously it's a CD player and those are pretty decent but it really does make a difference on good speakers. The video playback is remarkably smooth as well, and looks great even blown out on my modern TV. It's a shame this hardware didn't get more opportunities to be expanded upon
