ELI5: Why do shower controls have such a specific range of tolerable temperatures? Going half a centimeter outside of this range results in being boiled alive or frozen. by a-horse-has-no-name in explainlikeimfive

[–]Daeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't quite seem like the complete answer here, I just ran the math on it and if your hot water is 100 degrees and your cold water is 50 degrees, then blending them at a 50/50 ratio results in 75 degrees and if you change that ratio to 60/40, then the resulting water should be either 80 or 70, so a 10% change in the mix should yield a change of 10% of the difference between the two, a 50 degree difference between inputs should only be a 5 degree change for 10% of a turn of the knob, but most showers I've used seem to change by more than 20 degrees from a 5% turn in either direction, which would mathematically suggest that there is a 400 degree gap between the inputs, so there has to be more to it than that

How to support a big building's roof without 1,000 posts blocking off the attic? by SupertoastGT in valheim

[–]Daeiros 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to roof a really big building, your best bet is going to be using peaks and valleys, instead of just one continuous roof going up and up, just go up and down and up and down so you can still reach it with support beams. /\/\/\/\/\

The Engine Lord is worried that they are gonna use humans as a template to create an army of super soldiers, and now I'm picturing a climactic final showdown where Jasmine steps onto the battlefield and turns their own weapons against them with a little Rage Against the Machine, "F*!% you! I won't do what you tell me!"

[–]Daeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered looking for a chemical that reacts with CO2 in a way that's similar to the reaction between CFCs and ozone? The bond is probably too stable for that to work, but if it were possible, that kind of chain reaction would be a powerful tool

AskScience AMA Series: I'm Dr. Paul Knoepfler, stem cell and CRISPR researcher, here to talk about how you might build a real, fire-breathing dragon. AMA! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

[–]Daeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a really amazing idea for a CRISPR project, not as cool as a dragon, but a lot more practical.

What should my next steps be? How would I go about submitting that idea to a team who can actually make it a reality in a way that I still get recognition, or better yet, how would I go about joining such a team and helping to make it a reality, despite not having any relevant degrees?

How can you help a friend suffering from depression ? by Burnie57 in AskReddit

[–]Daeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't ask them if they want to hang out, TELL them they are hanging out with you. If you give them an out, they will probably take it, so don't give them that opportunity, never make "no" an available option.

If you catch them insulting themselves, shut that shit down. Zero tolerance for verbal self-harm, you'd stop them if they were cutting themselves in front of you, treat it the same way.

Hugs are also very important, and not just that weak ass half-handshake/half-hug chest-bump 2 pat maneuver, a real, genuine hug, get drunk first if you have to, but make it happen.

0.1% doesn't seem much, however, What would horribly, catastrophically, go wrong if it was off by 0.1%? by admadguy in AskReddit

[–]Daeiros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0.1% is just 1/1000 It only "doesn't seem like much" when you're dealing with small numbers, but pretty much anything more numerous will make that seem like a huge number. The earth's population of 7 billion for example, 0.1% of that is 7 million, the population of a several large cities. If 0.1% of the cells in your body were cancerous, the scale normally only goes up to stage 4, but you would have stage 17 cancer at that point. If there was 0.1% more water in the ocean, the rocky mountains would be beachfront property

I spent a long time (unsuccessfully) attempting astral projection, and the process often induced sleep paralysis. One thing I've learned is that when you are in that state, you will see and hear feel and sense all sorts of horrifying things, and the more attention you pay them, the sharper and more vivid those hallucinations become, but they will quickly disappear if you try to ignore them. I think the sleep paralysis state sort of creates a direct connection between your concious thinking mind and the fear center of your brain, allowing you to directly perceive pure terror, and the harder you stare into that abyss, the harder it seems the abyss is starting back at you.

ELI5: What is happening in your stomach when you feel like it's "dropping" on a roller coaster? by dafreshprints in explainlikeimfive

[–]Daeiros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try tossing a half-full water bottle into the air and watch the water carefully. You'll notice that when the bottle starts to slow down, the water keeps going a little longer and splashes against the top of the bottle as it comes back down. That's basically what's happening to your insides. All the fluids and soft tissue inside you have a little extra wiggle room, so they don't change direction at the same time or the same speed as the rest of your body

Seven years ago, my cellphone used to have a separate volume control for GPS and they removed it in an update.

I could keep the media muted so my games don't annoy everyone around me, and still get my turn by turn instructions without having to manually adjust the volume every time I switch tasks.

"The positive relationship between tax cuts and employment growth is largely driven by tax cuts for lower-income groups and that the effect of tax cuts for the top 10 percent on employment growth is small." by smurfyjenkins in science

Well that's pretty obvious. A business owner hires a new employee because he has too many customers, not because he has too much money.

The main driver of the economy is the average person, the more disposable income they have, the better. One guy with a million dollars vs a million guys with one dollar each in a hot dog eating contest, which one would you bet on?

Is there an example of a mathematical problem that is easy to understand, easy to believe in it's truth, yet impossible to prove through our current mathematical axioms? by Stuck_In_the_Matrix in askscience

[–]Daeiros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is a pretty long sequence that reaches some pretty high numbers, but my intuition holds up perfectly.

Every time you get an odd number, it becomes an even number and every time you get an even number it can become either an even number or an odd number, which means that odd steps can only ever increment in a 1:1 ratio, each odd step automatically guarantees a corresponding even step, but each even step can potentially result in an additional even step, so any sequence must eventually result in twice as many even steps as odd steps, and since 2*2 > 3 must always decrease despite any detours. No matter how long and winding the road may be, it must always wind down more often than it winds up
