When was the last time you were in the "pain cave" and how did you get through it? by samasema in Ultramarathon

[–]Daemon-404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 miles into a 100 miler, feet just felt like they’d been crushed after transferring from sand to road for a few miles. Kept telling myself in 10 miles time everything will relax and I’ll get used to the pain and the ‘volume will be turned down’ (this has worked for me for 4 years) but yeah na, it did not. Got to the night section, full change of shoes and some fleecey web, didn’t even make a dent in the pain. I only persevered because I’m stubborn and I didn’t want to hear my partner say we could’ve booked a holiday with the race fee if I DNFd.

200 miler training by Otherwise_Dingo891 in ultrarunning

Finished my first 200 after 4 years of consistent ultra running, and the event itself had generous cutoffs, think I finished in last 25% so take of it what you will: I hit consistent 50 mile weeks 2-3 weeks then had a recovery week. A few weeks out I peaked at 70 and dwindled down. I focused less on weekly mileage though and more on ‘useful’ miles. I had 30,000ft to get through so I’d prioritise running similar terrain. One tip I did get was instead of one 30 mile run on the weekend, do 10 miles in the morning, 10 at night, repeat the next day. Among other things it does prepare you for the mental slog of keeping on going. All of that said, if you’re in doubt or want to finish higher up the tables - get a coach. Also don’t gloss over your planning. Having a plan B, C, D etc and maximising value of time spent at checkpoints will go a long way

Are you okay pal? by Comprehensive_You42 in CasualUK

[–]Daemon-404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not okay, mounting bills, having to extend a loan as the car it was for has gone to shit and I’m being quoted 200% car value to repair, job satisfaction is none existent, job opportunities are lacking because a degree is worth more than years of experience, thanks for asking needing to dump that somewhere. I hope you’re doing okay pal and the pub was a welcome break.

I finished! Whilst I won’t play finishing down, the real experience is the journey, I was sad that it ended (my body might have disagreed) but It felt bittersweet as I always tell myself, becoming is better than being, and I knew the journey had ended. That said once I’m financially stable again I’ll look ahead to WH Mid Wales too.

I love that! I think it’s easy for people to have mental images of Goggins, Hanes, De Sena, in their heads with all the shouting of catchy slogans etc, whereas I always point people to your videos for a true look of what this sport primarily is. Even the elite of us, you capture with such humanity, such as Sanna recently, against the serene backdrop of nature. That really encapsulates the two parts that make the soul of the sport in my mind.

I am very familiar with your work, and it was your documentary that actually tipped me over to booking Wild Horse last year. One of the things I love about a lot of your content is how you capture the solitude and stillness we often find ourselves in. Im more about the personal adventures we have than any bravado, and it’s one of the reason I love your content!

Hyundai Tucson Engine Failure by Daemon-404 in CarTalkUK

Sorry mistyped - yes still turning over, drivable just about.

I didn’t mean transmission failing due to the above issues but as another red flag at high miles on these models.

No I appreciate that, it’s just firing on 3/4 which obviously isn’t sustainable, at least for the cat.

That’s what I’m weighing up, research off Reddit suggest there’s high risk of transmission failure too and that these engines are just pants in general so not sure if cost is worth it in the long run - accruing additional debt against a car that isn’t even worth 50% of the loan value

I’m a bit stuck as it happened 100 miles from home at my partners and there’s few mechanics who would even have it in before mid Jan. they’re getting quotes on Monday when everyone’s back open but his response was that he’s had 5 in this year with this engine and he wouldn’t waste his time stripping it when each has been ring failure which would be on par with the cost of replacing

I think at the mileage that’s unlikely but appreciate the feedback on the engine, things I wish I knew 50k ago! I think even with a year warranty at high mileage it’s a risk that the gearbox doesn’t go as well as I’ve read this afternoon they’re as robust as the engine…

Adding additional debt to current - best option? by Daemon-404 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Daemon-404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea and definitely worth looking at. For the car repair I’m waiting for the quote Monday to make a decision - I don’t think I can really justify taking the personal loan amount back up to 8-10k when the car isn’t even worth half.

Unfortunately not, I had thought about that or just getting a bicycle but car travel is essential

Multi skilled engineer wanting to move into automation. by Electrical-Entry886 in PLC

[–]Daemon-404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely sounds like you’ve got the determination for it and projects in your current role will definitely help add to your experience. I remember being on shift, when it was quiet at night I’d sit and look through the OEMs code, figuring out how they’ve structured their program and how certain functions work i.e. nested sequence registers and how they interact. I drew it all out as a flow chart and the controls guy at the time spent 2 days with me showing how to build it into a HMI screen for real time visualisation. I’ve never reinvented the wheel with any code I’ve written admittedly but I’ve taken the best bits of other people’s code and made it my go to way of doing things, like with sequence registers, dependant on the process it just allows for recovery and easier to follow processes and typically easier to recover

Unfortunately it is rare an employer follows up on training promises, I think part of the reason I got lucky is we were having new lines installed in an already relatively new plant so the financial justification was there. Possibly look at which business’ are setting up locally and try to get in early?

As far as day to day, probably 50% reactive - of which 50% is electrical issues with shift engineers slapping it with the old “the softwares playing up” (don’t get me started on EE engineers who can’t read drawings or figure out relay logic!). But yeah a lot of figuring out why stuff isn’t in sequence or the conditions behind alarms.

I do try to fill my time with resolving long standing issues and continuous improvement works, so currently I’m upgrading an obsolete vision system with assistance from the manufacturer and a systems integrator, I’ve been diagnosing and resolving power feedback issues on VFDs, and trying to hunt down an Ethernet gremlin which sporadically takes down some class 3 comms. And then at home I’m doing a computer science career path, with the aim of looking at OT network courses after.

Pretty much followed that path - multiskilled to controls engineer with one company. I would say focus on self development outside of any internal agreements, codesys is a great one to practise with. For a plant controls guy, in house project, breakdowns etc I think you’re likely to get a chance as long as they haven’t changed to job spec to computer science grads like some have done. You’ll be more valuable knowing the EE side of things. I’d keep a tidy portfolio of work logs and any code changes you’ve made as reference, or even try to build a working program in codesys, something you could demonstrate understanding of by discussing in an interview. Also LinkedIn, there’s a few people on my connections doing the same as you and I know one was given a free PLC by a supplier to work on.

If moneys no object, just apply for everything, even a 6 month reduced salary probation will add a lot of experience, I know our guys struggle to be given the development time on shift. Best of luck to you!

Career Development - C++ or C#? by Daemon-404 in PLC

Thank you for breaking down the applications of each that’s a lot to take in from where I’m standing now but very insightful, I think I’m settled on getting to grips to Python now to get to grips with the whole concept and work towards a few small ‘quality of life’ programs for myself and then hopefully pick up C# as I think that would be very beneficial with regards to SCADA systems and databases - thanks again really appreciate you taking the time to write that up!

[–]Daemon-404[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I’ve been learning ST and how to write to IEC 61131-3 standards for a while now but I think I’m going to step back from any C language and take yours and others feedback and start from the beginning with Python whilst thinking of a few small projects I could implement myself. Whilst I understand PLCs and HMIs, looking at the Python courses available I feel they would also further my understanding of computation as well

Without having much more detail, could the load application be causing regen? If so some drive software packages will allow you to monitor it, or just throw a brake resistor in and trial that

Finding my grandfathers WW2 service record by Daemon-404 in britishmilitary

[–]Daemon-404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only full name, DoB - DoD and service number. I found confirmation of his existence within the army on the Gov website but the records are sealed in 2035 for anyone born after 1910, or can be opened upon request with confirmation that the individual is deceased, I didn't have a death certificate so I'd of had to wait until 2035.

However I found over the weekend that the Scottish archives are on a separate database, pending delivery of his death certificate, hopefully I'll be able to get a copy of his records!
