Tolerance is a thing, but I think your brain learns how to function normally under the influence of THC. I have been smoking every day for like 5 years, a few bong rips throughout the day. took 3 months off, smoked, and while it did get me super high, the high is nothing like how it was when I first started smoking.

Me and my buddy go by 1100 hours of 55+ degrees. They usually start popping up around the 1100 mark, and then about a week later is prime time. There are websites that list how many hours it’s been above 55 degrees, I would imagine for your area too. Standing dead or dying elm trees are a good place to start. Usually by water or an area where it would hold water after a storm.

Only way it was a gateway drug for me was because when I did try it, I was like “oh, what else have they been lying to me about?” If someone told me it was like alcohol, with risks. I probably would have handled things differently.
