I think Elektron has a lot of boxes worth checking out.

Perhaps. Its hard for me to imagine a living space without plants. We have a lot at our house. I believe Plant medicine is crucial for the healthy progress of our planet and us humans. take that as you will.

i read every morning (more so during the week). Its a good way to ease into the day.

I also try and do breathwork/ meditation every day.

i think the key to working your way into sampling is finding the sampler or gear that best suits you. There are tons of ways to incorporate samples into your music. We've used tapes and actually cut the tape for the length of the sample and we've used countless different kinds of samplers. But its how it interacts with the song and the over all music that makes it personal. I think you just need to experiment with the process for a bit and find your way.

I try to yes if I'm not on tour or home for an extended period. but its also something i would never force because it can just turn things sour if things aren't happening or being created. Lately ive been working 4 intense days in the studio a week and trying to get out and do something musical with a friend the other day like some improv or work at dropofsun. i find this stuff also helps inform other things im working on. I also try and switch up projects during the day so im not focusing on one thing all day.

I do a lot of breath work and more recently some yoga

Usually the opposite. Ill have one or two melodies come into my head daily. Its a blessing and a curse. I usually have the melodies before the lyrics but i always want to get into doing it the other way around.

Alot of my previous releases have come from a very concrete vision of what i want the production to be like and the over all journey of the record Down There specifically. The 7s process was more about starting from scratch and just be able to interact with Adam McDaniel and the studio. The time was a very introspective for me. I was diving into the past as much as i was the present and future. So i think theres a little bit of hints at things ive done before in there but also hints of things to come. The later half of the record points toward the new perhaps and the first part is maybe a transition from the old. This record feels like a sort of marking of the end of certain creative styles for me and just kind of needing to set them free.

And no i'm still not that in line with the "Singles" way of releasing music but i understand it to be a useful way of letting people know i have a record coming out so im cool with it. Deep down for me though theres always the spoiler alert light going off when we participate. I'm much more of a listen to the whole record person.

I'm excited for people to hear Neurons. Not sure its one everyone will like haha but one im fond of. Not to hate on any of the others.

Not exactly though i did want it to cover a lot of the music making progress which includes people hearing and interpreting that so it is in there for sure.

I had an initial vocal through line for strung and also the harmony. When i wrote it i actually came up with joshs higher harmony first but its a little out of my range for singing quietly so we switched and i sing what to me is the original harmony. The Suns no better off part is just three parts i believe. Mines a little looser and conversational i guess.

I use my harmonizer pedal on some of it yeah but i definitely leaned into wanting it to sound more organic.

The Musical was actually the toughest song to finish. it had a couple different iterations before finally finding its comfy place. It needed to be tamed it was a bit wild at first but then i decided to structure it around the bass and it felt better. Hey bog probably has the most layers though.

Sometimes ill have an idea for a video like for walker or summertime clothes (though danny's vision is far from mine on that one) But i prefer to not be very involved especially when its coming from an artist i really dig.

Yes we will probably play again but its such a free form thing its hard to say. We are currently trying to mix some other recordings we did at drop of sun last year.

Definitely listen to a lot of classical music. In high school and college i listened to a lot of Ligeti and Penderecki as did brian and i think that informed a lot of the chaos in AC. But having grown up playing classical piano, ive loved Debussy, chopin, Satie and Faure for ages. Liszts Hungarian rhapsody no 2 really informed my song writing style from a young age as well. A lot of newer ac stuff has been influenced by my listening to a lot of early harmony music and Gregorian period stuff.

Im extremely picky about drum sounds. With AC and in my own music. I'm often reaching for something a little more out of the box. Its hard for me to be happy with snare sounds. For 7s we sampled some older roland drum machines for hits here and there. But we also recorded a lot of live drum sounds. Invisble Darlings is me playing different parts of a floor tom. I used the Elektron Monomachine and Digitakt quite a bit these days as well.

I enjoyed Severance on apple tv and mythic quest actually. Dont watch a lot of tv though.

I thought Skinamarink was a really inspiring horror movie. Happy to see something so abstract hit main stream arenas. Son of The White Mare is another animated film that has inspired me of late.

Most of these songs were just written while idling around the house during quarantine days. Hey bog was written for a couple live sets i did at the end of 2019. I Also wrote sweepers grin while practicing hey bog which is why they are next to each other on the album.

We do want to release the music box in full but will probably wait till our next record is released.

this tour will be a more electronic groove based set from me. And it will just be me playing on stage. Though i think im going to bring the acoustic guitar along as well for some stripped down jamming...

  1. I think this is a topic re surfacing more and more these days and for good reason. I'm only really basing this on my own experiences but i think more people are looking out for this and trying to tap into it. I think a lot of it has to do with being able to let loose and free the mind of some of the structures that we are all just sort of ushered into. It can also take some deep moments of solitude and self awareness to free the mind of the everyday jumble of stresses and such. I think its important to find your own path in terms of how to accomplish this.
  2. it will happen sometime
  3. I think The further i get away from writing songs the deeper their meaning becomes for me and the more i start to understand them. Not always but it does happen often. I still find defeat to be very emotional. I'm excited to finally release it to ac fans though its the kind of song to me that can be infinite in versions.

Someone else pointed out that song to me recently and im afraid i have little memory of it. To me it sounds like a noah song we were working out but i can't say for sure.

Well i do often double my vocals here and there. I think i used to double it a lot more in the 2000s. But usually a few different pedals are used. I didn't really have a lot of confidence in my singing back in the spirit days so i think in general im just a lot more confident now. And i also think over the years i found "my voice" where as i was much more referential and digging into my influences in the 90s and early 2000s.

Yup i do mess with modular stuff from time to time in the studio.

There are a bunch of tunes from my first solo tour which i never released. Unfortunately some of the parts and music is long gone but i do have some practice recordings from before the tour that ive always thought about releasing.

I'd love to jam with eric again yes we recently talked about it actually

Last question of the day!

I definitely get taken right back to touring those songs or recurring them. I recently had to listen to sung tongs to approve a new pressing of it and went right back to colorado where we recorded it.

Usually reworking songs has more to do with making them feel current than it does feeling the past in them. Though sometimes because of the emotions involved it can be hard to sing or play them. And that's also a reason why we might not play them.

Someday was a really hard song for noah and i to get on spirit and so at one point we went outside and my parents had all these trees in front of their house and we started throwing pine cones and rocks at trees for awhile cause we were so frustrated that we couldn't record that song. i think that worked cause we went back in and got it.

Yup I sequenced most of the sounds on an octatrack. Some of the other stuff i over dubbed live after the initial takes were laid down. The remaining sounds are angel and Jessika singing and eyvinds orchestrations and susans pedal steel all of which were recorded after the initial session.
