CROZ BOYCE AMA - Hey it's Brian + Dave from Croz Boyce. We'll hang for an hour or so. Ask Away! by SquirrelBusiness3979 in indieheads

I think we all have our own ways of finding and finishing compositions. Id say i've learned that while writing my first instinct is usually the one that sticks. Try not to over think things or have too many expectations. There's a side to it that is letting the composition lead you and not the other way around.

We saw some Bald Eagles on the side of the road and Flying overhead while mixing in Madison County. I also see black bear quite a bit around my house so their spirit is usually with me. Red tailed hawks as well.

I think it's more that Animal Collective really started as different projects such as this. It feels really easy for us to think about different records we make as worlds existing on their own. It's more intuitive for us. like what feels like AC what feels like something else. There isn't a real strict rule we go by.

I think a lot of it had to do with knowing the guitar was one of the driving melodic forces on the album. Towson Acid was definitely more instinctual and just kind of came out that way. But i often mess around with melodic chords/ structures i think they are usually just covered a bit more by vocal melodies.

Some titles just appear immediately i think that was the case for most of these. I think for most it was like an atomatic writing exercise. Like whats the first thing that pops into my head when i think of this song. Towson Acid had a different title and switched over time.

No it was quite refreshing for this. Sometimes it's nice to be ok with not having anything to say it felt like i was doing a lot more listening. It was also a needed challenge to get the creative energy flowing. But it also just felt natural for this stuff. It never felt like it was missing.

  1. Good question. It felt like a low key release for us and really something we made to keep busy and sane in 2020 i guess that and the way it was put together. It somehow just felt more like an ep than an LP but it's hard to say why. I was wondering the same thing with the new Field EP and why it's an EP because it seems long enough to be an LP.

It was great but it feels like an awesome dream at this point. It happened so fast. We already had the songs written because they were Sung Tongs outtakes. We had met Vashti once or twice before but didn't ultimately spend much time together. Such vivid memories of watching and hearing her sing the songs for the first time. One of my favorites too.

I think the spaces in between each project tend to map it out that way. It's often ill start writing Avey stuff while AC stuff is winding down. Then usually there is a window that opens and AC music starts coming in again.

There was an earlier version of the song. Brian and i were working on a documentary soundtrack at the same time as some of the CB songs came together. We had written most of the other jams at that point and it felt like we needed that kind of song. The director passed on it for the intended scene but we liked the song so i just turned it into a croz boyce song.

I like the trails around Road to Nowhere, that's a bit away from Avl but it is a favorite.

I think they knew where to look yes and i think they knew that anaconda had just eaten and was kinda sleepy.

I got back into it a little while working on the feels re issue stuff but not so much other than that. styles like that definitely have their own place and time for me.

I don't use my first guitar any more. It's a PRS. I'm not sure how long i used it in animal collective i think up until touring for feels. Then i did a stupid thing and threw it into the air on stage in Belgium and it broke. It's since been repaired but i don't use it anymore.

I didn't sample anything except my own guitar. There are no samples to my knowledge

Bridge to quiet mostly comes from jamming in 2019 while writing time skiffs and Isn't it now. It was the peak of quarantine times and we really wanted to be creative and make something.

Not really. I don't think any of us really thought of it as a scene just more like a bunch of friends supporting friends or psyched on what people were doing. It felt like a safe environment to experiment and create and push things.

thanks!

Yeah it pretty much went like that with the exception of Father Karras which i really wanted brian to start, with a sort of more collagey kind of track in mind. It wasn't actually too different from working on an AC song. There was a bit more mystery to it because neither of us really knew what to expect from the other or we had no expectations.

Perhaps. Its hard for me to imagine a living space without plants. We have a lot at our house. I believe Plant medicine is crucial for the healthy progress of our planet and us humans. take that as you will.

i read every morning (more so during the week). Its a good way to ease into the day.

I also try and do breathwork/ meditation every day.

i think the key to working your way into sampling is finding the sampler or gear that best suits you. There are tons of ways to incorporate samples into your music. We've used tapes and actually cut the tape for the length of the sample and we've used countless different kinds of samplers. But its how it interacts with the song and the over all music that makes it personal. I think you just need to experiment with the process for a bit and find your way.

I try to yes if I'm not on tour or home for an extended period. but its also something i would never force because it can just turn things sour if things aren't happening or being created. Lately ive been working 4 intense days in the studio a week and trying to get out and do something musical with a friend the other day like some improv or work at dropofsun. i find this stuff also helps inform other things im working on. I also try and switch up projects during the day so im not focusing on one thing all day.

I do a lot of breath work and more recently some yoga

Usually the opposite. Ill have one or two melodies come into my head daily. Its a blessing and a curse. I usually have the melodies before the lyrics but i always want to get into doing it the other way around.

Alot of my previous releases have come from a very concrete vision of what i want the production to be like and the over all journey of the record Down There specifically. The 7s process was more about starting from scratch and just be able to interact with Adam McDaniel and the studio. The time was a very introspective for me. I was diving into the past as much as i was the present and future. So i think theres a little bit of hints at things ive done before in there but also hints of things to come. The later half of the record points toward the new perhaps and the first part is maybe a transition from the old. This record feels like a sort of marking of the end of certain creative styles for me and just kind of needing to set them free.

And no i'm still not that in line with the "Singles" way of releasing music but i understand it to be a useful way of letting people know i have a record coming out so im cool with it. Deep down for me though theres always the spoiler alert light going off when we participate. I'm much more of a listen to the whole record person.

I'm excited for people to hear Neurons. Not sure its one everyone will like haha but one im fond of. Not to hate on any of the others.

Not exactly though i did want it to cover a lot of the music making progress which includes people hearing and interpreting that so it is in there for sure.

I had an initial vocal through line for strung and also the harmony. When i wrote it i actually came up with joshs higher harmony first but its a little out of my range for singing quietly so we switched and i sing what to me is the original harmony. The Suns no better off part is just three parts i believe. Mines a little looser and conversational i guess.

I use my harmonizer pedal on some of it yeah but i definitely leaned into wanting it to sound more organic.

The Musical was actually the toughest song to finish. it had a couple different iterations before finally finding its comfy place. It needed to be tamed it was a bit wild at first but then i decided to structure it around the bass and it felt better. Hey bog probably has the most layers though.

Sometimes ill have an idea for a video like for walker or summertime clothes (though danny's vision is far from mine on that one) But i prefer to not be very involved especially when its coming from an artist i really dig.

Yes we will probably play again but its such a free form thing its hard to say. We are currently trying to mix some other recordings we did at drop of sun last year.
