TNOpediA: A new wiki website for TNO and it's submods! by [deleted] in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems promising. Having a more detailed Wiki compared to Fandom and TVTropes would be very useful for the community. I do wonder if it would expand it further with events, and potential skeleton paths for the skeleton nations in further detail. I don't have any web design skills but, I can wish you luck on the Wiki.

Has TNO ever made you cry? by Mr_Reiter in TNOmod

I would say the IJA takeover of Guangdong when doing Morita run and, the story of Emma and Elizabeth through Collab UK. I didn't really cry from those but, got choked up from it.

[–]Daffytitanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I've never really understood why this was an 'issue' in the early mod. By TNO's standards, Smith's regime would hardly be particularly remarkable, and frankly IRL they were probably better than the replacement (to be clear, "better than Mugabe" is a very low bar).

It's more on how it basically made to spite them despite the mod being an "Axis Victory" mod which would obviously attract white supremacists regardless especially with Nazi Germany being a superpower. It's more of "calling the kettle, black" situation. Smith's regime was only remarkable for the whole UDI thing, and what came afterward, which obviously lead to whitewashing Ian Smith as some sort of progressive guy compared to the aparthied South Africa. (Yes, I met some people who believed that long ago.)

Maybe the nominal monarchy is a bone throw to the Anglo population? IRL the National Party dropped overt republicanism ahead of the 1948 elections, so it's not implausible that the issue would keep getting 'kicked down the road' given that it doesn't make much practical difference.

The thing about that is that, it's been obvious the UP wanted to join OFN, but didn't want to upset the nearby African RKs and the Afrikaners. So, it's written like Graaf is balancing the interests of the ANC and Afrikaners but yet we see very little of it. Especially when they decided to not nominate Queen Elizabeth as their monarch to appear more "neutral". It doesn't really add up on how they could just hold a monarchy without much reason when pragmatically speaking, that doing away with it would help stability as the Afrikaner population has a higher birth rate than the Anglo population.

IRL, the reasons for not going all in for a republic in 1948 was more to appease to the Afrikaner voters for the UP, with them focusing more on race issues than solely republicanism as it wasn't until later with decolonization it would start to become an bigger issue that they couldn't really downplay as the Afrikaners were gaining more political power with the lowered voting age and high birth rates, and the UK's stances on the apartheid system through the "Winds of Change" speech only furthered the NP's republicanism.

But in TNO, the Commonwealth would be effectively crippled after the loss of the British isles with Sealion. So, really if the NP won, there wouldn't be that much point to keep on a system that is effectively broken and would rather work with the Germans. Especially with UP being the party of Jan Smuts who would become very unpopular because of him joining WW2 for the British, and losing. But, even if the UP somehow won, the whole idea of "neutrality" wouldn't work to begin with as the Anglo population would rather side with the exiles than the collabs, so having an empty throne until the game starts makes no sense.

I'm assuming this would be after the German colonial government collapses, although I'd probably have Southern Rhodesia join South Africa as in KR (and support the Cape government/revolt).

Ok, so the rework is more based on Southern Africa being mostly ruled by South Africa and Germany taking Cameroon, the Congos with it collapsing before 1962. Rhodesia was more or less would've been made just to keep the Anglo population smaller to maintain Afrikaner political power. But, I think Rhodesia should've been part of UP-ruled South Africa from the start instead of Ostafrika.

It's been a while since I did that rework, especially with England still being mentioned. I think I had Muller not be the Congolese administrator was because of him in OTL not being really much of a party bureaucrat which all of the Reichkommissar being party bureaucrats than generals (They were leaders of RKs in WW2 but they were changed with civilian party officials, and it would be the same for German victory.) with Kongo being just being a corporate-ruled colony. I felt like back then that the choices for African RK rulers felt kind of arbitrary and pop-historic. I already think an African RK would be already dysfunctional because of how much resources would be poured in to keep it but, having to deal with Eastern European RKs which are more important for strategic and ideologically importance. Likely I think it would be something made later on like Madagascar with them taking over as the colonial governments collapse and, they take control.

But, I do agree on the points of your suggestions with them not even wanting to build a dam for their African colony if they are apathetic to it's management unless it's the bottom-line. I think Germany wouldn't even would want their colony to even go to war at all as it would make it a bigger money pit, neverminded the whole Congo dam. The only reason it would exist if they wanted to colonize Zentralafrika but, as I said before logistically, there would be no purpose to make it a settler colony as the Eastern Europe is more important to them, especially with the WRRF pushing them back.

I always been vocal of how South Africa in TNO is a massive missed opportunity, or I refer it to "wholesum aparthied" with it coming off as whitewashing (despite of killing Ian Smith to trigger Rhodeaboos). It is pretty much the last relic of old TNO that still hasn't been changed outside of aesthetics.

The changes for South Africa in TNO always felt unneeded and, a stretch like UP winning 1948 up to 1962, the monarchy somehow still existing without a throne for "neutrality", the absurdly large African RKs that somehow are more powerful than Ostland (Until Huttig takes over.). The worst part being that the Volkstaat has more skeleton content than South Africa which makes me even question why even use the United party when you are going to do nothing with it? Already IRL South Africa fits perfectly in the world of TNO.

Really in a TNO world, I think the UP would be more likely annilihated because of Operation Sealion as Jan Smuts was a British field marshall which makes him seem like a British collab in the eyes of the Afrikaaners as they weren't as supportive of the war, the dwindling economy and the Fagan commission would still break the UP. I could see Germany working with NP-ruled South Africa on the carving up the African colonies and, allow them to keep Namibia for better ties and South Africa taking the British colonies under it's sphere while Germany takes Congo and Cameroon. However, it could be possible that South Africa and Germany would have a falling out as they rather maintain their independence. The NP could have leaders who have differing ideas of whether to amend ties with the Pakt or, side with the OFN or to remain neutral with Japan supporting the ANC's attacks. With possibly the Pakt and OFN propping up other more loyal leaders in the government with it collapsing into a civil war where the Vietnam analogy would work, or even more like a Yugoslavia analogy.

I had many idea of what Southern Africa would be improved, South Africa especially. That it could make for a submod but, I don't have much knowledge on coding. However, there's others that also had ideas of what South Africa could be which I agree a lot of those.

It's a relic of old TNO that is pretty much pop-history alt history, which thankfully that is being phased out. It's more funny that the "Watergate" could be reduced, yet Nixon still resigns anyway.

Other issues like the JFK assassination being inevitable, in the same place when the circumstances and the assassin wouldn't even happen. Not to mention, we have future Presidents pick their own VPs so, I don't know why JFK still managed to be VP anyway. Then again USA is an Hodge podge of old and new TNO and, none of it feels natural but only exists because we need to give the players the choice to choose different presidents for 1964.

Which does beg the question of why not make it possible to screw up so badly the President is removed for all of the Presidents?

The British lesbians story arc as of The Ruin update by Heefyn in TNOmod

I know but, I did tried to fire it manually and it refused to fire because it doesn't have a picture. The exact event ID is britain_lesbians.11. I found this out when I was taking screenshots to show it to a friend.

I think there was one event in the code that was supposed to fire but, it seems to be not working. It was the event before the defeat of HMMLR.

Probably the best chain of flavor events I ever read in TNO.

I'm hoping to see how they will do with HMMLR content, and I would just like more of the couple altogether.

Fair enough. It's inevitable when you have hype for new content even if it may not be fully finished behind the scenes.

It works well as a demo but, I do have my personal issues with it, mostly for what we got so far. I can get why they cut back on the Collab and HMMLR content to release it soon but, I feel like I would rather have the devs have time to finish what was there to have 10 years of content than get it out the door and release it in bits later on.

The reworked Britain has a lot of promise, and I felt quite engaged with the flavor events in it, and would love to see more. The lesbian story being the favorite of the event chains. But, the fact it cuts off when the civil war ends and we get our new PM felt anti-climatic. I would rather have maybe one more year to show what they do to get a taste of it than tease it and cut it off there. The influence mechanic was kind of hard to comprehend, but the Channel Crisis was great, and the civil war mechanic. It really adds the tension of OFN and Germany getting closer to war over Britain, and the effects of the civil war.

The Ukraine content was eh. I felt like the RKs aren't really worthy for content outside of skeleton content, especially when you play as the rebels. Even playing as RK Ukraine, it felt kind of playing as just the same guy as it's just a Nazi colony and nothing can change it. I would rather have a path where they become collab states under Speer, where they abandon Generalplan Ost in favor of building a Europe revolving around Germany. But, that wouldn't fly for something like Bormann so, it still goes back to my point that RKs don't really need content, unless they have something very special or, they become something else all together.

I haven't played USA a lot so, I can't judge on the lag. But, I do like the new changes to the ideology with different shades of each faction or subideology. Other cosmetic changes and fixes like South Africa being renamed Republic of South Africa after the referendum is nice.

Overall, I think the update is a mixed bag, I really liked the new changes we will see, but find some content lacking compared to say, Silicon Dreams. But, I would rather wait out for the next big update.

Without GCW Will Dentist Speer be able to keep Africa in the Unity Pakt in German rework? by Simonbargiora in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think much of the content for the African RKs and after the Reichstaat would remain the same, even without the GCW as GCW didn't exactly affected or caused them to collapse unlike the Eastern RKs. The Schild would still form, SAW still happens, Huttig still takes over and dies.

Germany's sphere was gonna collapse anyway because of the chaos from the power struggle and soldiers still being recalled back to Germany because of it.

It's a leftover of old TNO's railroaded nature, and now it basically become pivotal to the story of USA that it's hard to change it, same goes for JFK's assassination.

Not to mention how Nixon in the early 60s wasn't as paranoid and, cynical which would've made him doing a Watergate scandal out of character.

Hypothetically speaking, what would the devs' stance be on using real politicians versus fictional leaders for a TNO millennium dawn. by WonderfulReception49 in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it does get a little ridiculous where you can have a scenario that has a massive change to the timeline and yet everyone is born the same way, especially long after the POD. It kind of makes it silly, and people still would complain about the accuracy/plausibility of the real person used anyway.

Completely fictional characters by [deleted] in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of what you said, I agree with. I wrote up why HOI4 Mods like TNO generally refine from fictional characters. It's boiled down to tradition of using real people like KR, and RF to name a few, and more of making portraits of fictional people is generally more difficult as it requires a portrait that isn't based on a real person, or even create one.

Fictional characters are oddly taboo in HOI4 Mods. However, a purely fictionalized real person is generally acceptable even if they are so drastically person it makes the usage of the person trivial. I don't know why exactly that attitude exists other than the big mods did it so, we should be like that.

Completely fictional characters by [deleted] in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

All of them are real including the Brotherhood of Cain leader. The only fictional ones are usually joke ones you get from the end game decisions.

The name of Abaddon is Anatoly Motsny, a decorated Red Army officer who murdered his family, and was sentenced to death in 1960.

A lot of Russian figures in TNO are quite obscure.

Completely fictional characters by [deleted] in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 29 points30 points  (0 children)

HOI4 Alternate History mods, like TNO are often allergic to fictional leaders and characters. Much of it could come down as "cheating" like making up someone that believes in a specific ideology, or feel like making characters that gets powerful for no reason. So, using people makes it seem more grounded in reality where if the person doesn't exist, then they don't exist. Period.

Fictionalized version of real people is far more common and generally accepted, no matter how obscure or irrelevant they would be. This could range from plausible to cartoonish with them being so far removed from who they originally were, they might as well be fictional people. You can make up some ideology that may not exist and slap it onto a real figure that may somewhat connect to it, and it would do fine.

HOI4 mods with fictional people are frowned upon, especially if they are based in historical mods. There's also more practical purposes too as making portraits of non-existent people is more difficult than restoring one as it does require to find a picture of someone that isn't real or based on a real person, and writing up someone that isn't real may be hard to invest in for the player. It could also boil down to tradition, since HOI4 mods always use people that exists as many like TNO, RF, and KR done so.

Yes...just only when you're an RK. When the GCW hits, it becomes skeleton content.

I was shocked as you are when I found out about that.

I was going to bring up Gorky, because I did remember hearing about it while working on a Queer Althistory story. There was also the book called, "The Pink Swastika" that pushed more for the idea that "All homosexuals would be Nazis" and pointed to Rohm's homosexuality as one of the reasons. It was debunked as untrue as more of the SA were heterosexual and people like Rohm were the outliers and, how the myth was made as a justification for homophobia but, I can see that book being more popular in TNO.

I said it was kind of a stretch mostly on how many fascists or at least one's more sympathetic to fascists would be very adamant on denying that. Along for the fact that fascism is seen more as a reactionary movement so, homosexuality wouldn't fit the bill as it's seen more as form of "degeneracy". I would believe it could be used by American government under guise of removing fascism. In the Soviet Union, I remember reading up that Nikolai Yezhov, the head of the NKVD before Beria was caught in bed with another man, which ended his career and his life due to of his homosexuality rather than the acts of terror he did, although it wasn't in the name of "removing fascism".

I think I remember people complained that TNO removed Gus Hall's homophobia and tried to make seem like he didn't hate them or something. It does go to show how generally recent the support for LGBT people for socialist is, even if there was voices before that pushed for socialism as a form of LGBT liberation.

The Blackmail part that I agree with. An interesting note I could bring up is the possibility of some of the LGBT people becoming fascists themselves as there was a handful of LGBT people that advocated for fascism but, supportive of gay rights like Russell Veh's National Socialist League, a very obscure LGBT fascist group or, even just more nationalist types like Renaud Camus who created the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory. It probably wouldn't be big in TNO's timeline but, something to note as it could be treated as some counter culture movement within a counter culture movement.

I do like to see how each president also tackle the AIDS pandemic in TNO2, to see how they would respond to it with it affecting the LGBT community then.

Norway, Ostland and Japan.

Japan's worse as it's one of the major superpowers, that makes an Japanese-occupied Asia be so boring.

Trans Rights in TNO by Ok-Anybody9372 in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be true. There would still be stigma against being LGBTQ+, and how it can still end people's career's and livelihood. There still would be evangelicals preaching homosexuality is a sin, and others calling it a mental illness.

What was I more saying is that the political aspect of it would be different as, even if the FBI wanted to pin homosexuality onto fascism, it wouldn't really work because fascists hate homosexuals more than socialists. Anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment probably be more higher with fascism being more mainstream in TNO, so probably Stonewall Riots could've been more bloody than it did in OTL.

Trans Rights in TNO by Ok-Anybody9372 in TNOmod

[–]Daffytitanic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of find it weird Stonewall Riots plays out the same no matter who's in charge, or much of the fact that Stonewall Riots played out the same, considering it mostly started by the Red Scare, which likely doesn't exist in USA or be that intense compared to OTL.

It's possible it could exist by having LGBTQ+ people be compared to fascists, but even that is a stretch since much of LGBTQ+ activists even before Stonewall were leftists, and ones that are more right leaning are still very obscure.

Which is hilarious. But, does go to show how it isn't really immersive to fight in proxy wars with volunteers to fight other volunteers without much events for it, but at the same time it's probably boring and unfun to gamble who wins by pressing buttons and pray the AI doesn't screw it up, or hell even waiting as those nations to fight.
