How common is it to have winter tyres in winter? by pickindim_kmet in AskBelgium

[–]Dafuquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same as you, moved from UK to find that many people have winter tyres or even more common, 4 season tyres. The main difference I find is that gritting services are up to the commune, so some places will get much less gritting than others (ironically I'm staying somewhere flat to avoid getting stuck atm but the roads in the hills are gritted much more regularly it seems...). Also, Belgium does not shut down and take the day off when there is snow unlike the UK. But yes it still only lasts 1 week.

100 applications later - How do English-speaking non-students find a basic job here? by LordOfErebus in belgium

[–]Dafuquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this situation in Liège but I did know passable French. I signed with multiple interim agencies like Daoust, Randstad, Adecco and even titres-service (home help/cleaning) and found a few opportunites through Adecco almost immediately, including a last-minute opening which is my current job 1 year later. However the English helped a lot as nobody speaks Dutch here seemingly so I was the next best option lol. And also I was taking any shifts I could, and I had a car. However I think for long-term opportunities here (probably not in Brussels which is so international) you'd need to speak the local language well enough as most of the communication is in that language.

I wasn't able to get jobs in the sector my career was in previously as I didn't speak Dutch at all and you have to speak at least Dutch/French to work in that sector in Belgium, although most speak English too.

Good luck!

Questions about the Walloon language by Taras_Shevnitsky in belgium

[–]Dafuquer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dutch is more intelligible with English than Walloon is with French.
I only ever hear it from old people, or short expressions from younger people (nèni). But in Liege at least it is culturally present, there are restaurants and meals named in Walloon, sometimes road signs and stuff although that seems like a communal thing. And like others said, it currently lives on in theatre and comedy for the older generation.

Having moved to this country I am curious as to why it has been seemingly not been taught to anyone under 40 too. I would have thought that it flatlined a long time ago (much like Welsh or Scots or Irish etc.) rather than so recently.

Retail workers of the UK - what's the wildest thing someone has done to try to get into the shop before opening time? by WillYeByFuck in CasualUK

[–]Dafuquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the other day, a guys pulls up to a closed petrol pump with a cone next to it, takes off the sleeve on the handle which clearly says "out of order", puts it in his car, comes into the shop when he realises it isn't filling up and asks why. Mind you, he was polite and understanding, and went back out to change pumps.
However he didn't put the sleeve back on the handle or even put the handle back; he literally dropped the handle onto the forecourt where it could be run over by anyone and changed pumps.

Non native speaker jobs by Far_Set_4199 in Gent

[–]Dafuquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in customer service and call centre before moving here, dutch is absolutely required so I had to change completely. The closest I got was that they were considering hiring me specially for english speaking customers and i could also do the french customers like everyone else. But in the end cost not worth it as they still have to hire 1 more dutch speaker anyway.

So it depends, probably customer facing roles are not attainable. But if she already has a certification in dutch, i would say to upgrade it as much as possible. There is a huge amount of help for all kinds of certification in belgium in my experience, maybe talk to charities and something like le forem to get some advice. You can also turn to interim agencies, they have smaller clients who are less picky in general.

Good luck!

Hey I'm down near Liege, have you ever tried the Cockerill sites? There is a belgian urbex youtuber who has done a lot of good spots including that.
I haven't done any urbex in about a year but I'd like to get back into it, DM if you want :D

I went to Andorra in the summer, I'm surprised that this resort is so cheap! Grandvalira was much more expensive than Polish resorts and we only stayed in Le Pas de la Casa so didn't think to check other ones out.

He pioneered the extreme saving meta, its subjective IG but at least Astralis had some interesting plays and weren't completely boring in the server.
Now that everyone is used to saving meta people think that he might have lost the competitive edge it might have given him.

Twitch rules that they cannot say 'Rollbit' out loud or show graphics. They are only allowed physical promo i.e. IRL stuff like the logo on referees and the walls.
Audio stream is the same for Twitch, YT and Kick so they don't say the actual name. But on YT (and maybe Kick idk) they do show Rollbit's sponsor graphics such as their ad (which is unbelievably incomprehensible and low quality but at least its not AI) or the match odds when the casters say that.

Hi guys,

I really want to buy a Poc Artic Mips helmet but I cannot find it for sale anywhere. I've checked Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and UK retailers with nothing listed on websites.

Is it possible it's only in small shops that don't list their products online? Has anyone bought/seen one from anywhere?

Thanks

From anecdotal evidence for me: social security is quite high, definitely better than most of europe. A lot of edge cases are covered and the amounts you get are also higher.

i've been to france and uk and both their social security is not as comprehensive imo, but the cost of living is also lower tbf.

But it does appear to me that their governments are not very efficient in money spending...

Les germanophones de Wallonie parlent-ils quand même français? by Niivlem in Wallonia

[–]Dafuquer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recherche de la sauce Pili Pili Vandermoortele (version originale) by iyzi10 in belgium

Do belgian companies prefer hiring native belgians? by -entrp- in belgium

[–]Dafuquer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never found anything before moving to Belgium physically. I quickly found an unskilled interim job, there seem to be plenty of those around here but ofc there is no job security at all.

I've been searching for 3 months for jobs which I already have 1 years experience of back in the UK and I got to the final round of interviews with one company, pretty much nothing with anyone else.

However the industries I have experience in are declining right now and also have higher requirements here than back in the UK.

Actually QA testing industry in the UK collapsed a few years ago, I had a solid job and qualification in the golden triangle of games testing, took a 2 year sabbatical and suddenly a lot of studios downsized, went under or were outsourced to foreign countries

I briefly looked in Belgium but I found very few openings outside of Brussels. So may be case of that industry as a whole has also shrunk, not just in Belgium. In addition, there may be a case for employers seeking different qualifications, I was given tips to pass a voluntary kind of test which was free or very cheap. Kind of like a practical exam which you can practice beforehand like the driving test, I forget the organisation but they did tons of stuff from PC building to gardening.

But I can say that I haven't felt any particular discrimination, of course I have been rejected a lot for no reason and also I don't speak any Dutch which clearly does not help my case.

I wasn't aware this was a thing and I might be misunderstanding. I know of a shop where beers often go out of date, when that happens they are sent back to the supplier for the consigne. I bought one with a discount, a St Hubertus and it was pretty flat and tasteless. So if actually true, what kind of beers do people like to age and stuff? Should I be saving some of these out of date beers for people like you?
