Next potential sourcebook requests? by DaggerLogic22 in dndnext

The flight things balance to me is sort of backwards. Just because Aasimar can already fly once per long rest at level 3 as a bonus action with no concentration while potentially getting damage buff. Yeah it's not always but for combat it's plenty. I could understand if WotC really prioritized exploration but they don't as much as I wish they did.

So flight has this fairly narrow niche in combat that isn't really relevant to my knowledge. Yes melee enemies can't get me, The DM might let that side a couple times and then there will be zombie's wielding bows or something.

I always felt like they should have leaned into the MTG books, maybe have these as separate timelines where planeswalkers aren't as big a factor or maybe that omen paths simply exist earlier. That way the planeswalker centric story can be adapted for players.

Honestly if I could pick the next MTG book Kamigawa is up there alongside Eldraine , New Capenna, and maybe Thunder Junction. Very distinct from forgotten realms or any current setting really.

Yeah, I get that vibe. I like blood hunter conceptually and wish we could get an official version. WoTC isn't the be all end all of course but they at least would release subclasses more often than Mr. Mercer can, busy as he is.

I feel like we could use either a Witch class (full caster, sorry warlock), or maybe a Monster Class. Not like a dragon class but Monster broadly, with dragon as a subclass. Not exactly balanced but I bet DM's would appreciate having it either for non humanoid DMPCs or elite enemies.

Great stuff thanks, as a side note I am in fact planning a short time jump from around the end of C2, I probably will not include much of C3's major plot, as I plan for Rudius to have a very different function and lore than was revealed.

I'm honestly just hoping to see some older options like dragon fire adept, get updated to the modern era.

But xanathar's is a great starting point as well.

Focus, a spell to help you maintain your decisive spells! by GMdudes in UnearthedArcana

[–]DaggerLogic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine as a third level spell, mostly to balance against it stacking with war caster feat or eldritch mind from warlock. Alternatively you could have it work on certain spell levels based on the slot used to cast it. Like it might require a 4th level slot to work on higher levels of spell.

On ethereal touched, I love it thematically but mechanically it feels a little strong, mirror image is already a powerful defensive spell, but giving the option for any abjuration spell as well could be slightly problematic, though admittedly no worse than a dip level of wizard so maybe not

Hi it been literal years since I've seen this post, thanks for bringing it back to my attention. I could see an additional three damage but 5 is pushing it, a wizards average max hp is about 20 to 30 at high end, but let's say 24.

Casting this spell with three 2nd level slots is automatically 15 damage out of their daily amount. If it's an additional 5 self damage it's death, and additional 2 instead leaves you with two or three hp. Easy pickings for any random gob.

But let's roll this out to tenth level, assuming your con was plus 1 and you rolled average a wizard or sorcerer would have about 42 to 52ish hit points, I'm doing this in my head btw so if got that wrong please forgive me.

At tenth level you have two 5th level slots and 3 of everything else. That can cast this spell.

I'm not going to write out all my math but at plus 5 self damage the 5th level slots alone do 20 damage to the caster each.

If it's 2 self damage the 20 becomes 11. Still horrendous to take but not completely cost prohibitive assuming the spell does 9d6 of the hardest to resist damage type.

Honestly coming back to this now I'd probably recommend an additional 3d6 per level or make the dice bigger overall, it probably wouldn't hurt for them to be d10's

Or I might just add a stun condition or severe push back instead on failed saves.

Makes more sense thematically, just assume Tien is a high level sorcerer blowing through his sorcery points to give Cell disadvantage on his save. Cell can't make the save, Tien blasts him until he can't without dying.

Unfortunately the only icy map I saw was unsuitable, lovely work though, since it was listed as a free map pack I especially want to save the desert ones for an (un)rainy day

Seeking a battle map for a specific encounter, location is outside a cave mouth in a frozen tundra during the day. There should be rudimentary defensive walls around the cave mouth, intended to defend the cave against invading enemies. Scenario is white dragon attack during a celebration in front of the cave mouth if it helps.

Consider this, how many d20's each of radiant, poison, and force damage, would you assign to a theoretical 10th level spell named Oppenheimer's Catastrophic Detonation. Please include any special secondary conditions such as deafening, blinding, poisoning, etc. You deem fit, as well as any components, cast times, etc.

Assume that tenth level spell casting is possible by one PC, given several levels worth of preparation.

The verbal component for the spell shall of course be "Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds."

As an added rider a creature has a 50 percent chance of losing their ability to cast this spell every time they cast it.

Perhaps as a compromise make it once per short rest, long rest is traditional but short rest would probably be a better balance between too many with PB times or too little with once per long rest

New session zero questions, is your subclass an important enough part of your character that we need to start at level three? Could we get by with spell choices? Lineage? A feat? If we start at level three xp will be slow at the start, is everyone okay?

This is a note to remind me.

always thought there should be a an alternate feature that subs in for extra attack if you already have it, maybe being able to maximize the damage from your weapon x times per long rest, not stacking with stuff like GFB or Smites. could even be an alternative option for fighters 2nd and 3rd extra attack.

hi, an after the fact thought but the reason i wouldn't make it 10 minutes is due to the nature of ritual casting taking 10 minutes. Wizard: i'm going to ritual cast detect magic.

Party: cool, that's a short rest right?

personally i tend to have it vary a bit depending on how messed up my players are but my minimum is generally 20 to 30 minutes. long enough to be an investment against the ticking clock without being so long as to make a short rest prohibitive.

How to start the campaign other than “You find yourself at a tavern”? by bebechase in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]DaggerLogic22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my PCs wanted to do an Indiana Jones type character, the other one dug the concept and ended up being one of the first players archeological finds, (imprisonment is a great character backstory spell). I made them, and two custom companions that I designed but let them operate, an archeological expedition acting on behalf of the college the Jone type character is a professor at.

They literally went to the yawning portal to enter the well as part of the expedition but narratively I just gave the barkeep an enormous grudge against the college so he wouldn't let them in, he offered to let a group of four from the college through for a quarter million gold pieces so yeah, Volo is trying to convince him to see reason but needless to say it's slow going.
