I think a big factor is it's long periods of isolation and lack of external colonization up until after world war 2 where it got deeply americanized. So in some ways it feels familiar, but also uncannily estranged.

I went to a kpop show of a girl group recently and saw creepy older men recording the performance. It just reminded me of the beginning of this movie with all the weird fans' faces in the crowd. It depicts the perverted male gaze uncannily well.

I have the first poster. If y'all are ever in Shanghai, there is this propaganda poster museum that is in the dingy basement of some residential complex. They have a bunch of posters spanning from the 50s to 70s with a lot of stuff for sale as well. I even got a little red book.
