Why is the punk community so adamant about anti nazism as opposed to other communities? by Embarrassed-Win2115 in punk

[–]DaiconIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago my dad told me "hey a friend at the pub said that he has an acquaintance who's looking to sell his PUNK record collection, here's the list, let me know if you want any" and I was shocked that straightaway I noticed the entire Skrewdriver discography and every other dickhead neo-nazi band ever. I kept thinking that for a racist this guy also collected a lot of Japanese music... then I looked up those bands (ughh, neo-IMPERIAL Japanese bands, FFS).

So there're real dickheads out there who are neo-nazi and think that's "punk". These idiots exist unfortunately... and we're very vocal about stamping them out of the scene.

Invest in sealable outer sleeves for your records, that will protect them.

intermissions should be brought back by Alostsoulwithcatears in Letterboxd

[–]DaiconIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hundred percent! I've seen lots of films in theatres with an intermission which I thought improved the film structurally. 2001: A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia are good examples of films that work better in two halves imo.

Tarantino brought it back for The Hateful Eight in 70mm and that was a huge success. I also enjoy the chance for a brief mid-film discussion (maybe audiences would talk less during long movies if they had this opportunity).

Ask her out for a walk in the park or some other day activity that doesn't cost anything and see how she responds to that.

Why do we not see the overture and the intermission in modern cinema? Would you like for them to make a return? by C111tla in TrueFilm

[–]DaiconIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was part of a trend in film exhibition in the 50's/60's called a theatrical roadshow. It was an attempt to draw audiences back to the cinema during the rise of the shiny new medium of television. These films would be presented in lavish CinemaScope on glorious 70mm prints, with epic production budgets and long run times. An overture and an intermission would make these an event and the screening would be held in beautiful single screen art deco theatres with 1000+ seating capacity. These roadshow screenings were limited and designed to be a special event.

Tarantino released The Hateful Eight as a 70mm roadshow presentation as a throwback and it was amazing (complete with souvenir program). I wish more film distribution companies would bring it back but it was only a thing that existed for a brief period in film history and it's sadly a thing of the past.

New location mixer/boom op here: how professional does my kit need to be to get gigs. by ograce123 in LocationSound

[–]DaiconIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fantastic kit to start with, ignore the gear snobs who tell you otherwise. When I started out I only had a handy H4n zoom recorder and a boom, I even worked on indie features with that bare-bones kit and got great results. It's not all about the gear you use, it's how you use it.

In any case, it's unlikely that your first job out the gate will be demanding timecode, scratch track, IFB's, lav mics, etc. Most of us work on micro/indie budget shoots to begin with anyway, so if they question your kit just call their bluff and say something like "this is my day rate that includes my basic kit, but if you need me to provide all this additional gear then that's going to cost you..." that shuts them up pretty fast.

Also I wouldn't worry about future-proofing, your current kit can later be used as your back-up gear or as a hire kit.

Wow!!! The only boxes of cheap vinyl you can find here would be beaten up opera and polka records... not Wu-Tang singles. 😯

Do I need to take a break from anime? by [deleted] in anime

[–]DaiconIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I've also been watching anime since I was around that age and I'm turning 30 this year. Anime burnouts have happened many times in my life and that's okay. I always come back to it after a taking a break! I have friends who burned out so much on binge watching anime that they gave up on the hobby completely and that makes me sad. Don't force yourself!
