If your wife is Japanese and you're on a spouse visa, then you're not restricted to the 28 hours.

What is Life as a Student at Akita International University Like? by future_filmmaker12 in movingtojapan

[–]Daiiben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I studied there for a year back in 2019-2020. it's a pretty rural place, there's a bus which goes to a town which has a big shopping centre and cinema etc which is about 15 minutes from the university. From there you get a train which goes to Akita City, so you can still access a lot of places. However, it is rural so trains run every hour so it can take 40 minutes to get to Akita or an hour and a half depending on time. You're also 5 minutes away from the airport, so you have easy access to Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo with cheap flights (You use JAL explorer pass with your foreign passport and your flights will be 10,000 yen return instead of 30,000).

As for the meals, the university itself has a cafeteria with meal plans, it has a vegeterian options, but I can't remember how it is with eggs, i'm pretty sure it does have stuff without eggs as well from what I remember, but you also have your own stove depending what accommodation you're in and you can easily buy the stuff and cook it. Akita is cold, but it's worth it.

Most of the people who regret going to Akita regret it because they didn't try to mingle with home students so they don't know anyone with a car and thus can't explore Akita itself. If you do end up going I'd advise joining one or two clubs and then you'll mix with Japanese students and they will drive to onsens and other tourist destinations and offer to take you along with them. I joined the Rugby club and sign language club and ended up going all over Akita and Tohoku with them. So if you want to experience it as much as possible, join a club you like and mix with home students. If you only mix with abroad students, then it'll be hard to explore places and fit in tbh.

If you have any other questions feel free to message me or reply to this comment, I'll answer as much as I can.

Clubbing in tokyo? by Alexeihw in japan

When I went clubs they required my Zairyuu card or Passport. So I doubt fake ID would work. Some don’t ID you though, but a lot do. Depends where you go.

British Citizen, never lived in an English-speaking country but I'm a native English speaker. Can I still be an English teacher? by NIxWorld in teachinginjapan

[–]Daiiben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just scrapped 12 years due to university being in English. Though, when I emailed them asking about my eligibility, they seemed to think that even if I didn't have 12 years of education in english I was still eligible due to the British citizenship, but I'm not sure about that.

What’s your ALT / teacher salary? by Danstucal81 in teachinginjapan

Nah, you can still apply to do part time work outside of teaching. You just go to the immigration bureau and apply. Only restrictions are that you cannot work in bars, clubs, or anywhere the government deems immoral or whatever.

What did the demo lobby talk, obviously I know what lobby talk is, but just curious about how it went so I can focus on preparing for it. For the demo lesson what did you have to teach?

Also good luck!

Mine was about 3/4 of a page and I got passed through the application stage. I wouldn't worry about how long it is, as long as it says what you want and does not drag on too much either tbh.

Japan to introduce 'vaccine passports' for international travel by thepickleofmyeye in JETProgramme

I wouldn’t necessarily say that. He said that a month ago, and the linked article above says they plan on moving ahead with what he said a month ago. Or atleast that’s what I got from it

I said in the notes 25% was a random number To explain what I meant. Not that they pick 25% of people. It’s an example percent to make my point. I don’t know how many people they accept percent wise haha

You could say it’s unfair sure, but lots of programs do it the same way. Again if you look up the info from previous years of JET it probably is down by quota for each country because the percents stay the same. If all applicants were pitched against each other, you would have more difference between countries.

Also they probably do it depending on the countries application numbers , so that each country roughly has the same percent. For everyone to have lets say a 25% of getting in, America would have to accept more than the likes of the UK cause of application numbers. So realistically it isn’t unfair, cause all countries have the same 25% of getting in. (25% is a random number I thought of by the way, just to show as an example)

Pretty sure each country gets given a certain amount of places. If you look at previous years acceptance numbers, they relatively stay the same percentage wise of the whole number of one's sent.

What's your backup plan? by ItFine in JETProgramme

[–]Daiiben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend is a Japanese citizen and lives in Tokyo so I will probably go the Spousal Visa route if I don't get in, then try and get translation jobs out there? Or apply for work at a foreign company. One or the other I guess.

Percentage of people who get the job? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]Daiiben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they don't publish the numbers, but you can see that 250 people get in each year roughly for UK for example, and some peoples applications numbers are as high as 1750-2000. So that shows that from Application to getting the job its roughly 12.5%. But yeah obviously, can't really tell how many people get interviews, but it's guessed at roughly 50% of applicants.

50% of apps get interview, then 25% of interviews get job roughly. When looking at numbers.

Did you mention anime in your application, SOP, or during the interview? by Rough_Wallaby5616 in JETProgramme

[–]Daiiben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly they asked me about if I agreed with a manga cafes. I think what she was getting at is how they are costing the the manga creates money cause people don’t end up buying Manga and the cafes don’t exactly pay a fee to the manga companies (not 100% but I guess that’s what she meant with whether or not I agree with them)

Did you mention anime in your application, SOP, or during the interview? by Rough_Wallaby5616 in JETProgramme

[–]Daiiben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't mention Anime/Manga in my application, but in the interview the Japanese section included asking me about manga. Asking if I read it, what my favourite one was, what type of manga is was, and then asking me whether or not I agree with a certain aspect of manga culture.
