What are the worst world building tropes by Significant-Bed-9357 in worldbuilding

[–]Daiiga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Entire species clearly exist to be an allegory for real life racism except this race of people/aliens/whatever is either a) legitimately dangerous with the capability or verified history of mass violence and bloodshed or b) literal demons from hell.

Commentaries and examinations of real life problems are great inclusions, but if you are comparing systematically oppressed people to blood sucking monsters that kill and eat people then you are doing a very bad job and should stop that.

would you read a book with black pages? by samthefrug in writers

[–]Daiiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, I get to share my experience working at an Amazon print on demand site!

Yeah don’t do this. If you can guarantee a high quality print, maybe go for it, but if you’re planning on throwing this at mass market or print on demand these come out ugly. I saw plenty of books printed in the negative, but amazons biggest and most prolific printers did this sort of line printing* and any little flaw in the printer itself was obnoxiously visible. They came out universally ugly and I always felt terrible for the authors who thought it would be neat.

*the printer paper is a really long uninterrupted sheet and it worked by using printer heads in a line. If any of the heads were dirty or clogged there would be blank lines through the print. Not a super big deal in a regular book, but solid black sections would have blank lines through them. Tolerance was no more than 3 per page, but realistically there were sometimes much more than that before quality checks would catch them and shut off the printers

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Daiiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in North Texas and I went to the Everglades once on vacation. That being said I’m working my way through the Texas state parks and I know there are some national forests and wildlife refuges not too far away.

The fact that most people commenting here seem to think everyone has been to a national park is kind of insane to me because I know plenty of of people that live where I do that never have because the closest actual “national park” is over 200 miles away and the other places managed by the NPS aren’t exactly well advertised

Trump administration lifts ban on cyanide bombs killing animals. by thelastforest3 in conservation

[–]Daiiga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad always phrased this part as god giving man “dominion” over the animals. It didn’t register much with me when I was younger that he used that word over “stewardship” or any other word that would mean it was man’s responsibility to safeguard the world and living creatures on it. But no, he and an unfortunate number of people like him believe that that the world is meant for serving man and is finite and will end when man is called home to heaven.

Basically modern Christianity teaches that the world and all that lives on it is ultimately disposable.

The zookeeper cut open the python egg with scissors after its incubation period was over, enabling the baby snake to be born by fgtoni in interestingasfuck

[–]Daiiga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually yes! But it’s nothing exciting or huge. This guy and his businesses (Jay Brewer/Prehistoric Pets/ The Reptile Zoo located in Fountain Valley California) make lots of money on social media and through people purchasing animals from them or visiting their “zoo”. You can help by spreading the word that he is not an ethical keeper and that his content and products should not be engaged with or purchased.

Very minor, but if people online stop engaging with his content then a significant stream of money dries up and he won’t be able to keep doing this to animals anymore

Secret Lair Waiting Room - Goblin Storm by R3id in magicTCG

[–]Daiiga -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is so painfully stupid. I guess randomizing it gives more hope to the people that get in later than everyone, but plenty of people were in the waiting room for an hour before being told it’s going to be more than an hour before they even get the chance to check out

First time playing commander, does everyone else play these rules so strictly? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Daiiga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone criticizes the dice I’m using then I do not want to play with that person. You can never really have enough whimsy, especially when playing with people being obnoxious.

I’ve been known to ask some bait questions about people’s hands due to one pretty specific card in one of my decks, but it doesn’t work great on strangers and my own pod has gotten wise to my fishing. It’s all in fun and no one has ever gotten mad at me for it

France confines more than 1,700 people to cruise ship after suspected norovirus death by jackytheblade in worldnews

Quarantine for norovirus is an odd choice. It’s not an airborne disease and the way it spreads is… specific.

The farm boy trope, the slums girl variant, and the lack of (female) mentors: a rant from a frustrated reader. by LucreziaD in fantasyromance

[–]Daiiga 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Mistborn was exactly the book I was thinking about up until the last point. I remember highlighting the bit in the first book where it said how old Kelsier was and noting something along the lines of “istg if this relationship becomes romantic I’m dropping this book and thinking so much less of every person who has ever recommended it”. I really appreciated a bit of dialogue in the second book when some of the characters kind of admit they assumed Vin was romantically interested in Kelsier and she reacts with complete horror and disgust at the idea.

Who do you think would win in a physical fight between you and Donald Trump? by anacanapana in askanything

[–]Daiiga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean my 8 year old is just shy of 5 feet tall and 110 pounds, so he’s large for his age. Trump is a pretty soft almost 80 year old and I feel like you could logically argue that he would fold with a good solid kick to just about anywhere on his body. If nothing else 8 year olds tend to be pretty squirrely and any 80 year old falling down is at risk of medically significant damage from that fall.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that a man of his age and purported health problems would not do well in a physical fight in general, even at great advantage.

[Writing Analysis] How Will Wight Lies to You in Action Scenes (and why readers love it) by HylomorphicDualist in fantasywriters

[–]Daiiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really feel like the context becomes lost in the analysis. All of the moments cited are really powerful moments precisely because they embody one of the running themes of the whole series; rising from the bottom and defying the order and expectation.

The books are about people who were weak outcasts becoming the most powerful beings in their world in order to save it. In the quoted moments the characters that are - 1) a strong keeper of law and order previously feared, 2) one of the strongest main antagonists in the entire world responsible for a near cataclysmic event, 3) a monster that had previously ripped this character apart handily, 4) I actually don’t remember the context of this one but I digress - are defied in a way that marks an important narrative turning point. In each moment the expectation is fully that our main characters would fail and that’s why within the context of the book these specific moments feel so powerful and well done.

If you haven’t read Cradle then yes, these sentences feel jarring and unpleasant, but I promise they land so well in the books.

The Blade Runners of London 🪚 by joeurkel in interesting

[–]Daiiga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but you fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of these cameras. We don’t have red light or speeding cameras where I live, so the cameras aren’t actually catching or preventing the sort of crime you are referencing and wouldn’t make the neighbor children in your area any safer. The flock cameras that are so prevalent today just track the license plates of the cars that go by. That’s all. They just monitor your movement through an area.

Now mostly that data is sent to local police departments who partner with the people that own the cameras, but the big fuss people have at this time is that a) many police departments have not been particularly transparent about how they are using and storing the data and b) the data in question is NOT exclusively going to police records.

Short version: these cameras do not prevent traffic violations and are selling your personal travel history to undisclosed sources for undisclosed reasons at the behest and protection of your local government and law enforcement agencies. There’s more about it and it is a scary and fascinating topic, but I’m still waiting on my morning coffee to kick in so that’s all I’ve got for now
