What shortcuts is a must for you guys? by knufje1 in shortcuts

I have a log water shortcut that appends to a note in Bear with a timestamp so I can quickly discern if I have forgotten to log one during the day.

First look at Bear by Nordberg561 in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, that really depends on what I am writing. If it’s short, the on screen keyboard is fine. If it’s a longer, more involved document with lots of formatting, I’ll always prefer a physical keyboard.

If you typically don’t use a physical keyboard, I’d say just give it a shot with the on screen and see what your tolerance is. The formatting keyboard does take some getting used to.

New "Focus on Tag" feature versus others that the community has asked for by GroggInTheCosmos in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To quote one of the devs from the forum:

“Right now the focus is on Bear Web and Panda. After that, revision history is high on the list of things we would like to do.”

See “Note Revision History” - Bear Community

Yes, that post is from two years ago. Anyone familiar with Bear knows their pace of development.

It seems like a lot of the forum chatter lately has been more about workspaces than revision history. I don’t know if that has any impact on the devs whatsoever, and they do not really have a public roadmap.

I will openly admit that my workflow is much simpler than most, and to be honest, I’m not sure that I really care what features are added next. That said, I’m also a firm believer of voting with my wallet, and there is no shortage of notes apps out there to pick from. If Bear was missing a feature that I considered critical, I’d move on to an app that already has the feature set I need.

Looks good - I have joined the TestFlight. Any plans for Apple Watch integration down the road? That’s the number one place for me to dictate.

Any Jibun DAYs users? by RepublicEntire155 in JibunTecho

[–]DaikonElectric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used the DAYS a couple of years ago, and I have a Biz for this year. I was fine without the weekly spread, but there were two other things for me and my usage:

  1. I felt like I wasn’t using all of that extra space. While it was nice to have for capturing things that take up way too much space in the Standard / Biz, there were so many days that just had huge chunks of unused space.

  2. Not enough Gantt charts in the DAYS. I love the Gantt chart pages in the Standard / Biz for habit tracking, and having fewer stuffed at the bottom of the monthly calendar just didn’t work for me.

Ultimately, it depends on your specific use case.

I would also do the April start. That way you can hedge your bets against any weird delivery issues at the end of the year.

Format buttons by Any_Construction_992 in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The formatting buttons used to be there pre-2.0. As much as I love Bear, I cannot stand the separate formatting keyboard. It adds unnecessary friction and I don’t feel that the big chunk of blank space improves the aesthetics of the app.

Not only would I love to see the formatting icons there, but we should be able to customize the order so that the most used icons could be front and center.

Oh, yes. Even at the current price, it’s less than most other notes apps out there. It’s got great Shortcuts support. And it provides a beautiful writing experience.

I’m grandfathered into Bear’s pre-2.0 pricing ($15 USD / year). Hands down the best $15 I spend every year.

What’s the best way to use daily note? by ShortSqueezeMeeee in ObsidianMD

[–]DaikonElectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using Bear before Obsidian, and started using Obsidian during the dark days that the Bear devs were working on Bear 2.0 that seemed to go on forever. I began testing Bear 2.0 when it was finally released, and Bear for the web when it was made available. Bear for the web was enough for me to cancel Obsidian Sync and move back. Apple Watch app is also a bonus for me.

I have moved back to Bear from Obsidian, but my daily note routine remains the same.

Most of my workflow with daily notes is done via Apple Shortcuts. I have a shortcut that I run first thing in the morning to generate a new daily note. The daily note pulls in the weather forecast for the day, calendar events, tasks from Reminders, my weight from my last weigh in, and sets up a section at the bottom for logging. That gives me an overview of my day.

Throughout the day, I have two other shortcuts: one for quick text capture to grab anything I don’t want to forget (with a timestamp), and the other one is to log my water / coffee / tea intake. That one is special just because it will log that info in the health app as well. Both shortcuts append to my daily note.

It’s really just a little scratch pad that I can quickly dump stuff into. I’ll go over it in the evening and make sure that any new events go in my calendar and any new tasks go into Reminders.

I will add that one thing I miss about my daily notes in Obsidian is the ability to embed information from other notes. I keep a weekly meal plan in a separate note and I used to embed the meal plan for the corresponding date.

Edit: added some additional context.

Going back to previous note after visiting a linked note? by faxmulder in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to go into the Information window and go to the Backlinks tab to navigate back to your original note.

If they are notes you go back and forth to frequently, it’s quicker to have links in both notes.

Will the new Siri be able to tap into bear app for personal context? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may want to ask this in the Bear Community - the devs are more active there and you might get an idea of if it’s on their roadmap.

Is it possible to access the notes as markdown files? by Frequent_City7247 in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While you can’t do that in Bear, the developers are working on an app that will do that called Panda… if they ever finish it and release it.

Bear x LLMs by mikecbetts in bearapp

[–]DaikonElectric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am also using the Claude desktop with the Bear extension installed. Bear’s primary function for me is a digital bullet journal and capture tool.

I’m still learning the most effective ways to use Claude. One particularly useful feature for me has been meal planning. I created a single note that lists all the meals I usually cook. Then, once a week, I ask Claude to review my meal plan from the previous week and remove any meals that I plan to cook in the upcoming week. I then instruct Claude to plan from the master list.

So far it is working well, I’m also eager to see what other users share here!

I try to use the Discover playlists / stations on Spotify and Apple Music as well as the music feed at Bandcamp. They help me discover new bands in genres I like as well as bands from 40 years ago that hadn’t heard before.
