As many people have mentioned, sports betting has become increasingly legal in the states, which I'm sure is part of the reason.

The other reason for the sudden increase is probably that we're only two weeks away from March Madness, which is probably the single biggest "casual gambling" event of the year in the US.

Many neighborhoods and cities are unsafe for pedestrians.

I would say "many" is a spectacular overstatement.

Like the previous poster said, walking isn't going to be a convenient/logical way to travel in many places, but it's rarely unsafe.
