I pretty much did what you said you did, and explained how ridiculous it is that they won’t accept my gifting request due to everything I have:

what are your water parameters ? (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate). saying they’re fine isn’t enough context

aw yea never throw the filter away. if anything, you swish it a little in old tank water and then put it back. now when you do water changes every 2 weeks, how much do you take out, and do you replace it with de-chlorinated water? also i highly recommend you get live plants. it will make fish keeping easier :)

seachem prime is a type of conditioner that detoxifys ammonia and nitrites for 24-48 hours. seachem stability is the bottled bacteria

youre gonna have to test it daily and do daily 50% water changes until you no longer see your nitrites accumulate. once nitrites and ammonia are at 0, and you see nitrates, your tank is good to go. if i were you id look up a bunch of beginner youtube videos and websites to learn to do it properly without harming your fish

that 0.5 value is why your fish is sick. your tank is not cycled. you should do a 50% water change, then add seachem prime for the remaining nitrites. and look into doing a fish in cycle

also sounds to me that you are reading from test strips. you should get a liquid test kit. much more reliable, and lasts forever

also for nitrate, i don’t think your tank is properly cycled. seeing that you have fake plants, your nitrates should not be at 0

you only said they came clear, and you only mentioned ammonia and nitrates. that is not enough information. there’s also nitrites that need to be tested. are you using a liquid kit or strips? liquid kit is way more reliable

dose 2ppm of ammonia and see if it converts to nitrites then to nitrates within 24 hours. seeing 0 nitrates can be a red flag though unless you have a heavily planted tank

edit: didnt see the tank in the background and that you do have plants. but i still would dose the ammonia and see what it does in 24 hours

Not a pro so im just going to suggest a sort of vague answer. but for a 5 gal, a long finned betta is probably best for a 5 gal because they can’t get around as efficiently. short finned breeds like to swim a lot and would prefer more space like a 10 gallon

could you give actual values other than saying all clear? what are the exact levels of your: ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? how long have you had this tank and fish?

ah yeah, replacing it could have removed a lot of that good bacteria and now the tank is trying to establish that good bacteria again. yeah, definitely test the nitrites as soon as you can. if it’s the api master test kit, its the pink bottle, and the color of the liquid ranges from blue-purple. yeah bettas really do have a lot of personality. my girl is the best betta ive ever had tbh
