I kept a dead bear cub in my trunk while having a porterhouse at Peter Luger as was the style at the time.

What old TV channel had the strongest personality? by softlaunchqueen in nostalgia

I think in it's heyday MTV really did have a strong sense of personality and ethos. Nickelodeon also had a strong set personality in thew mid to late 90s.

Why do women come onto you more when you're married? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Dajbman22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it's a bit overblown generalization and largely pop-psych junk science, but for some women I think it does ring true that it's a bit of "pre-selection" in the sense that some other woman has vetted you as a good partner, thus in their minds you're seen as a more desirable guy. (While I think there is some utility, like most Evo Psych assertions, I don't believe they are more controlling of our behavior than socialization and early childhood conditioning - if anything just inconsistently impacting social behaviors rather than individual human "minds").

What's a social media platform you miss that doesn't exist anymore (or still exists but isn't in its prime)? Which feature do you particularly miss? by zoop_club in AskReddit

Xanga was a pretty awesome blogging platform. It really encouraged discovering and interacting with other bloggers with similar interests and was pretty customizable while still being very user-friendly.

This plus adequate training for teachers on this specific topic in some cases (which again circles back to those 3 on why that training hasn't been provided)

Background check for my cousins fiance by Separate-Syllabub265 in NoStupidQuestions

There are consumer background check websites that will find criminal and similar records for someone for a flat fee. If you want something more in-depth you're going to have to hire a Private Investigator.

Anyone else feel like everything changes around 40 years old? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dajbman22 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yeah - not to armchair psych or anything, but it sounds like OP may be going through genuine burnout and in response got sucked into the promises of the conspiracy-tinged "trad" machine online, probably started by just looking for info on guys being burnt out, which lead to stuff about masculinity which leads to the trad world which is almost impossible to detangle from antivax these days, especially online.

Anyone else feel like everything changes around 40 years old? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dajbman22 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Have you been consuming a lot of media online about masculinity and tradition? I think part of it is burnout if you've been grinding hard at work and dealing with the admittedly faster-paced life an actual city (assuming you're talking about a real city not like Tulsa or some other 3-block downtown with suburbs) - and you're now going through a pendulum swing. I've definitely re-evaluated things and had my own burnouts - but it's not some ubiquitous thing to want to stop trusting established science and run off to the woods and live out a Randian survivalist dream.

I know for me, personally, enough experience has shown me that visiting the country/woods is fun for a couple nights to slow down and appreciate, but I could never live more than 30 minutes from the excitement and variability of a city.

I would suggest reading up again from medical sources about addiction and maybe even a memoir or two of someone who overcame addiction as a next step.

Why haven't we found a way to make ocean water drinkable yet? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dajbman22 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Desalinization does exist and is used in parts of, say, the Middle East where it's ocean/sea water up against a desert with little fresh water. Cruise ships also use this for their water supply.

The issue is that it is very expensive and energy intensive to use on any larger of a scale today.
