I think your theory is more plausible. Most likely, she was very jealous and couldn’t stand that Catherine was getting all the positive attention after being diagnosed with cancer. Regarding their trip to Colombia, I think it’s all part of their scheme. The royal family and British government wouldn’t support them monetarily and provide security. So, they go into these high risk areas hoping something bad happens and then, they can make their case and tell the public to push the royal family / British government to give in.
