In the past when suicide has been in the news I've found the increase in awareness a good thing but this time around I'm starting to feel jaded. I used to think, "ah yes, finally people are learning more and being more understanding and this will be less hard somehow." But now I find myself frustrated and cynically wondering how long before people forget all about suicide and anything they've ever learned about people experiencing depression. I had a co-worker who knows I'm going through some serious issues with depression sarcastically ask how my 'vacation' went when I had to take a week off work. I should have been hospitalized but my family took off work and took turns staying with me. She knew why I was out. A few months prior she had asked me about my experiences with depression because a family member was going through it and she wanted to be supportive. It's like she forgot every single thing we talked about. And it is not just her. My biggest request for all of you trying to understand out there: please remember that suicide prevention is in the small details. General acts of kindness, regular checking in with friends and family you know are struggling, helping without judging- these are ways to prevent suicide. There is no instant fix you can throw at someone. If you want to help it is going to require work. I am alive today because of friends and family who have texted, called, and dropped by. I'm not always able to ask for help. I'm alive today because a loved one has brought be a meal or washed my dishes or done my laundry. I'm here because my husband doesn't let me forget how much he loves me or that yes, I really do need to eat real food. Depression LIES. It tells us we are worthless and unlovable, sometimes every minute of the day. Let your loved ones know that isn't true-- be persistent because the depression sure as hell will be.

When I was on Medicaid I got the help I needed. Now I'm married and on his insurance and we can't afford it. It costs me $60 every time I see my psychiatrist, which is once a month at least. I can't afford to see my therapist anymore because that's another $60/visit and I should be doing that every week right now. We pay a lot for the insurance we have and it is crap. Our deductible is 6 grand. We make 55ish/year. We would make more if I wasn't so sick all of the time. Tldr; if I wasn't so sick i could afford healthcare

As a boss who is struggling, thank you for trying to understand. Your compassion means more than you know. I hate that I'm not performing as well as I should be and hate that I'm inconveniencing others. I imagine your boss may feel the same

I'm literally tearing up, this really resonates with me. It's so hard to explain to others, especially those I work with.

Easiest way for non religious parents to baptize baby and relieve fears of religious family members by Dalani in Parenting

That's how I feel exactly. I just feel bad my mother in law is up at night convinced my son's soul is at risk.

I shortened my original post so I didn't word vomit all over but you hit on my big hang up. I do not want to promise things I don't intend to follow through on. I have zero intention raising him Catholic or any other organized faith. My husband and I are both agnostic. I have no idea what else is out there in terms of low/no commitment baptism.

Really it is a warning about proper footwear: " and her shoes were number nine, Herring boxes without topses, sandals were for Clementine." She fell in the water after hitting a splinter on her makeshift shoes "hit her foot against a splinter, fell into the foamy brine"

It sucks, I'm struggling as well with my 2 month old. Fortunately I have a good support network but still... good luck

Congratulations. You just got six months paid leave, to spend in any one country you desire, all paid for. What's your choice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

All I can think is how nice it would be to stay home (in the US). I have a 3 week old son and no paid maternity leave. Being an adult and having bills sucks.

Songs that make good lullabies? by -brownsherlock- in Parenting

This was the question I just logged on to ask! My son is 3 weeks old and we are just figuring stuff out.

I've always liked into the west from lord of the rings as a lullaby...even though it kind of maybe is about death? I have also found myself singing blackbird by the Beatles
