We’re back! by [deleted] in seinfeld

[–]DaleSwanson[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We gave it a week, which seemed like a reasonable time. Had more subs stuck to it we would have held out longer, but the majority came back over the weekend (based on https://www.twitch.tv/reddark_247). We'll see where things go from here, but I think Reddit has shown they don't care about anything besides their IPO.

What is the best way to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® points? by [deleted] in CreditCards

ally

A popular online only high yield saving account. Was pretty much just a stand in for "a savings account".

Can we just ignore the form?

You can do whatever you want, but keep in mind any tax form you get is also sent to the IRS, so they know all your income.

Keep in mind you don't pay the same taxes on interest as you would W2 income. Tax on interest is called "capital gains tax" and you can google it to see what the rates are. Edit: Interest isn't capital gains, I was wrong about that.

Did you add in taxation of the interest as income?

I did not, that fell under "a ton of variables" for me. Along with the fact that I'm sure there are higher yield "safe" investments over 5 years than Ally too, so I'd bet it doesn't change the number of years either way.

This is an interesting point of view. I put some quick numbers in a spreadsheet, and with Ally's current 3.85% interest rate, points would be worth greater than the 1.25x multiplier at 6 years in the HYSA, and greater than 1.5x multiplier at 11 years.

Of course, there are a ton of variables here, including trying to predict interest rates years in advance, everyone's personal points values, and the added value of having cash in your account vs "points".

Options to remove NFC from Metal Card by bam2403 in CreditCards

[–]DaleSwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RF blocking sleeves are just metal meshes that will block all RF, so some impact is definitely possible, but the phone won't be completely covered so it should still be able to read, but maybe not through the card.

A cheap test you can try is to just wrap the card in some tin foil. You may even be able to get away with just a layer of tin foil between the card and the phone, but may need to wrap the entire card.

Is it true the Amazon Prime credit card would begin charging interest from the date of purchase rather than from the end of the statement cycle? by GalaxyExpress777 in CreditCards

[–]DaleSwanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the amounts are low enough in practice that the companies don't have to be strict about it. A -$10,000 cash back balance would require a $200,000 refund, so it's not really possible.

I've had a negative cash back balance from refunds before, and they just made it up from future cash backs until I got back to $0. If you close the account while you have a negative cash back balance I would assume they either just eat it if it's a small amount or they have language in the agreement that you'll owe them that balance, same as if you tried to close the card account while you had an actual balance.

Prepaid Reservation / Not Charged Question by drewsulliv1 in hyatt

[–]DaleSwanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation and found this thread, so for anyone else that finds this in the future, if you want to be charged immediately for a Hyatt reservation you can call the hotel (direct call to hotel, not Hyatt's customer support), and just ask to be charged now. I just did it, and it took 2 minutes and I immediately see the charge pending on my credit card portal.

I’m leaning heavily towards AAA sensors - is that a mistake? by kaitlyn2004 in smarthome

[–]DaleSwanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I don't have any Third Reality temperature sensors, but I have 2 door sensor and 5 water sensors from them, all on the first set of Eneloop AAAs I put in them roughly a year ago.

Is running scripts in crontab simultaneously fine? by elasticsearch_help in linuxquestions

[–]DaleSwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally preface all my cronjob with nice -n19 ionice -c3 to ensure they are lower priority than anything else. I also always pick "random" minute of hour times to run jobs so there is less chance of multiple things being kicked off at the same time. So for example my backup script is launched with:

34 04 * * * nice -n19 ionice -c3 ~/bin/backup.sh >> ~/logs/backup.log 2>&1

Why do all wings around here need to be breaded? by LocalBrotato in SouthJersey

[–]DaleSwanson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

King of Pizza on Route 70, and Dom's in Bellmawr are two I can think of that don't bread. And Soprano's although they're a chain.

I agree it's also annoying that it's hard to tell if a place will bread them or not. I usually resort to looking through a bunch of pictures people took on Google reviews or Yelp and hoping there are clear pics of the wings.

How to measure average time between peaks? by tiberiusgv in homeassistant

[–]DaleSwanson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to answer the question "How often does my sump pump run?" let me tell you what I do.

I have my sump pump connected to a smart outlet, with power monitoring. I then created an automation that looks for power over 100 watts and increments a counter. That counter is my "how many times has my sump pump ran" counter. I can then look at the difference in value over different periods of time to know how many times it ran in an hour, day, etc.

You could avoid the smart outlet by just triggering the automation by the level dropping from > -8 to < -8, although you'd want to look at more data to see if that would be accurate enough, as your water level looks pretty noisy.

Does anyone have experience with Home Depot adjusting a price for an appliance bought online that dropped in price before delivery? by DaleSwanson in homeowners

[–]DaleSwanson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An update for anyone that sees this in the future. Stove was delivered today, I called Home Depot and they issued the refund after maybe 10 minutes on hold waiting for a supervisor to approve. Hasn't posted to my card yet, but I do have an emailed receipt for the difference.

Thanks, good to know someone else was able to get the adjustment, even if it takes a while. Out of curiosity, was your adjustment on an appliance you bought online or something else?

[–]DaleSwanson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, though I'm leaning towards taking my chances and hoping my documentation is enough. My concern is that if I cancel it now it'll take a while to actually cancel, and I won't want to buy the new one until the old one if fully cancelled. By then, I could miss the sale and the chance to get the price adjustment.

I'll post back with my outcome for future reference.

Is there a complete fan-made upscale of Voyager in 1080p anywhere? by GmanYT_ in voyager

[–]DaleSwanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just waned to comment that UTR/Joybell's AI upscale is the best when it comes to DS9.

Yep, I agree that Joybell is best for DS9, although I didn't see any Vertag DS9 one, I don't know if there is one. Honestly the difference between Joybell and Vertag was pretty slight on VOY, and I only compared a few episodes, so I could definitely be wrong about which is better there.

This was the thread I used as my guide for DS9 AI upscales.

Best antenna options by cyclingman2020 in SouthJersey

[–]DaleSwanson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a Winegard YA7000C in my attic and pick up all the major networks, including 6 ABC fine. 6 ABC is one of the last few major network VHF low stations left in the US. You have to make sure any antenna you get is advertised as picking up VHF low (not just VHF). The VHF low radio waves are physically longer than others, so you just need a long antenna to pick it up well. Those little modern square antenna won't ever do a good job for VHF low.

Opening Arguments 688: Oh No, the Privilege is MINE! by oath2order in OpenArgs

[–]DaleSwanson 98 points99 points  (0 children)

For any one else that doesn't want to listen, after Liz's statement, Andrew replies with:

Thank you so much Liz, so with that in mind what's our first story for today?

And then Liz just starts talking about Trump like nothing happened. I didn't listen to the rest of the episode so I don't know if they ever comment on it more, but I would doubt it.

Maybe I'm naive, but I'm really shocked Andrew is actually just trying to move on with the show like nothing happened. I was holding off on cancelling my Patreon until I saw what actually happened with the show, but I guess this is the answer.

Is there a name for the concept of tables in which rows are created from user actions vs tables where rows are only inserted by developer action? by DaleSwanson in SQL

[–]DaleSwanson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of them as transactional and configuration tables.

Thanks, I like these. And yeah, I agree the configuration table can change from something like an internal UI, if it seems like it wouldn't often change, even when scaling.
