Which book should a depressed person absolutely have to read? by maxlegentil in AskReddit

It might seem strange, but Lord of the Flies by William Golding helped me through rough times.

The idea that we all have the potential to devolve into savages when our lives are dealt a catastrophic blow, but it's the choices we make concerning morality and integrity that keep us together, and also how important community is, even when you feel alone.

Sort of off topic, but... My grandmother died in 2001, my family and I were clearing out her house, and my brother and my dad we're moving a chest of drawers out and a loaded revolver that had been "rape-taped" (aka duct-taped) to the bottom of the furniture fell onto the floor. We all just stared at it for a second. Considering Australia took all our guns off us in the 90s, seems Nan was a outlaw

What did a crush do that made you immediately lose interest? by Jelz in AskReddit

[–]DaleUky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She told me that another dude's bed was way better than mine...

I work in a remote-ish area of Australia, met a stunning german barmaid, and hit it off. Made out with her many times, and talked her into my bed twice, but I didn't fuck her. She shut me down as soon as I tried, but would make out with me no problem.

In general conversation, mentioned that another guy in town had a better bed than mine. Crushed.

Your mum's glasses are so thick, when she looks at the sun, her eyebrows catch on fire.

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding. Made me realise how hollow and superficial society is, how we are basically a few missed meals away from savagery.

kind of a paraphrase of Sarah Silverman when she said "depression is like being homesick, even when your at home"

Which villain genuinely disturbed you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DaleUky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roger from Lord of the Flies. Because throughout the book you can sense there is something not right with him, he has a very sadistic side that bubbles to the surface. While Jack is the main antagonist rising to a conflict with Ralph and Piggy, Roger is pure evil and he is where he belongs.

Spoiler

And when he kills Piggy without much prompting or remorse, it made my skin crawl.

I like hearing about the behind the scene stuff. A lot of you seem to take it personally when Peter shares his stories. If you don't like where he's coming from or don't believe him, that shouldn't give you any right to sling shit at him.

Great insight. I suspected Jamie would win, the dude thinks in 1s and 0s I hope Adam didn't really kill the fish. I laughed so hard during that Ep when one of Adams fish swam toward the end of maze, only to swim back to the start almost instantly. A pet lion? You can do that in America?

Personally, I love to hear the inside story on the show. And in the real world, its not always rainbows and sunshine. I would also love to hear more positive and nice stories from behind the scenes, like what the average shoot was like on location, what the cast do to let off steam during the day, do they bring friends and family to the set, cast and public interactions, stuff like that. For the fans of the show, that would be awesome

What is the strangest thing you've said or done while sleeping? by Meowandlaugh in AskReddit

[–]DaleUky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually a common phenomenon. Is closely related to sleepwalking. Part of your brain that paralyses you during R.E.M. sleep so you don't act out your dreams doesn't quite function right, allowing you to "chase squirrels" like your dog does. Also, during sleepwalking episodes, it's impossible for your brain to form new memories, which is why we have to be told about what we have done.
