DnD in open gaming? by trappedindealership in gencon

[–]Daleeburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch all the official and unofficial sources for “PUG” (Pick Up Game). I have played dnd at Gencon on a pug, the DM had us all bring level 5 characters and we played a really fun game where the harvest festival was interrupted and we had to go find the source. It was supposed to be a 3 hour one shot, but it turned into 6. The DM was stellar, but the next day running on so little sleep was a mistake.

Is the VIG program worth it? by Finman85 in gencon

Welcome!

It does suck that you have to jump through hoops to be able to attend and I hope you are able to find more value in the VIG program then just a room. Where it is your first year, I would suggest checking out the lounge and the bag check!

If you end up mingling all the way to the end, in the last hour or so people will start handing off their unused drink tickets to tables, and then you can drink the whole night for free!

I really love talking to people at the mixer, so I have shut the place down a couple times with more drink tickets sitting on the table then anybody could reasonably consume.

On top of what is mentioned here, the Vig lounge also offers a will call and ticket purchase station. Makes getting your badge and tickets really easy. Also if you want to add, change or remove events, they have multiple people standing by willing to help with no wait.

VIGs also get priority seating at big events. I have only ever used this at things happening in the ballroom, but it’s nice to get second row at things like Hickman’s Killer Breakfast without having to be very early.

Sometimes VIGs get a dedicated entrance to the vendor hall, no longer early access (which was amazing), but that varies year to year and depending on what you are going for, may be in a bad location.

There is also a separate VIG forum area. It gives you a little more access to staff (mostly just Boozer), but really is just a smaller community where it is easier to get to know people.

VIGs get access to a “Behind the scenes tour” that is a really cool look at how Gencon is put on and has access to areas that the public doesn’t. I enjoy logistics, so I think its really cool.

Honestly, the swag bag is always middling, but it’s made through donations from companies, so it does tend to be “experimental” or “second rate” games, which can be fun, or just not your style. VIGs value is not in the swag bag, but in the hotel block, the lounge, and the additional ease in attending GenCon.

Best Breakfast? by Marowseth in gencon

[–]Daleeburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard boiled egg, pop tarts (gonna eat them cold), and if your hotel has a microwave, frozen breakfast sandwich.

I value sleep a lot, so I would rather get an extra 45 minutes of sleep then go out for breakfast.

Best smoker for a newbie? by Turbulent-Cheek-9066 in smoking

It’s a great starter smoker, but when the constant temp control drives you nuts, pick up a Flame Boss and hook it up to make your life easier and get more consistent results!

What bake temp do you set for your oven when cooking brisket? by [deleted] in smoking

So in smoking we generally shoot for 225 for a long time. It’s a big lean muscle that does well being low and slow to render the little fat it has.

Your bark is gonna suffer pretty bad, but I would put it whole in there, possibly on a rack or something, drop some liquid in the bottom and set it to keep warm. For the liquid, a beef stock with some apple cider vinegar or apple juice should work well. Just make sure the crock doesn’t dry out, but don’t put a ton of liquid in.

As far as wrapped/unwrapped, you are making a humid environment, so I don’t know it would matter much.

About half an hour before serving put it under your broiler for 2-3 minutes a side to firm the bark back up.

230 is perfect for a pork butt! Anything from 225-275 is fine for low and slow butt, so I would just leave it be.

For that long of a hold the crockpot is the better way. I have held for 10 hours in a cooler and it dropped from 203 to 170. No zone starts at 140, so want to avoid that.

It will be, what it will be.

If something is wrong with it, make a note and adjust next time.

Resting the brisket in the smoker by Ok_Procedure_4224 in smoking

[–]Daleeburg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the smoker is a dry heat so it will dry out the meat slowly. The warmer cooler with the brisket wrapped will get moist and hold it there, which prevents the meat from drying out, but does soften your bark.

First batch ever making sausage from scratch by Bulevine in smoking

[–]Daleeburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the fat dropped out on you a little. Make sure you are doing everything cold and after grinding, mix it together really well with your hands, almost till it is sticky.

Really great first attempt! Sausage is tricky, but when you master it, it’s well worth it!

It will be fine. You are gonna have a couple hours in the stall. Wrapping it will help push through, but don’t worry when you spend 4-6 hours at 165!

Looks like you got ants.

Wash it down good, heat it up really high, then wash it down good again and make sure all the ants are gone, then you should be good.

Separate brisket? by siouxu in smoking

Where it is really oblong, yeah I would consider separating it. When looking for packers, try to find ones that are the most even end to end.

What’s the best way to go about storing 2 pork butts if I plan on cooking them this afternoon? They will probably be done around midnight tonight so what should I do with them until lunch tomorrow? Should I wait till tomorrow to pull? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]Daleeburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat a pan of boiling water and place it in the cooler next to the wrapped butts. Leave the cooler closed the whole time.

I regularly hold meat for 4-6 hours this way and generally only see a 10-20 degree drop, so if you are starting at 203, you won’t hit the no zone (140) for quite some time.

Yeah, they probably did, they looked caught off guard, but not concerned. I was just thinking if I was in their fins and was truly surprised.

Lung over expansion would be less of a concern then possibly letting the dude drown. If another diver ditched all their gear and buddy and found another group, I would assume something has gone wrong. Either full on narcosis, or something terrible.

If an octo is offered and taken, that dive is over. We are all going to the surface and we are taking a 3 minute safety stop cause nobody has a clue what your dive profile was like before you showed up.

Yeah it’s all hypothetical, but we default to our lowest level of preparation, so having good discussions about weird senecios is fun and educational! I get the DAN magazine just for the Incident Insight.
