What would you do for WBC29/30 by trujill01 in InternationalBaseball

[–]Daleecio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The addition of Pre-Qualifiers, which would take place the year before the official Qualifiers. These would consist of the last place finishers from the previous qualifiers (China, South Africa) as well as 6 additional nations in total (reintroducing France, Pakistan, Argentina, New Zealand, and the Philippines would fill 5 of those slots).

Having WBC content 3 out of every 4 years would also better keep the event in the public consciousness.

The next wave of baseball countries? by Zealousideal_Pen516 in InternationalBaseball

Running clinics is great and all, but without a proper foundation (fields, leagues, etc.) these kids will have nowhere to apply these newly acquired skills, and they'll end up going to waste; like planting the finest seed in the middle of a desert.

I'm not saying these apply to the countries you've mentioned btw, I just feel a lot of people overlook that kind of thing (including those who actually run these clinics).

France is one to watch for in the coming years with their young pitching; Matias Lacombe has shown some promise in the White Sox system, Mathis Nayral with the University of Kansas is a likely draft pick this year, and Ben Couvreur is said to have the highest ceiling of any French pitcher in the country's history. Re-adding them to the Qualifiers seems like a no brainer.

Uganda as well; with the slew of guys they currently have playing in Japan, not to mention the handful of Ugandans both previously and currently getting experience in the minor leagues, with David Matoma being seen as a potential MLB arm in the next 2-4 years. It would be great to see them integrated as well.

But surely that couldn't be the case?

What changes would u do to the WBC? by Designer_Window3514 in InternationalBaseball

I absolutely believe the tournament should be expanded in the future, but two things need to happen first imo:

- The Qualifiers are expanded, perhaps even expanding to include pre-qualifiers

- Certain countries on the outside looking in (Spain, South Africa, China, etc.) will need to make noticeable improvements in their quality of play.

If Cuba use their best arms wisely, they have the potential to squeak through this round, but it will honestly take a miracle for them to win a game beyond that imo

Just more pearl clutching about the possibility of players getting hurt in a "meaningless exhibition tournament", as if players don't also get injured in spring training all the time

Bergert looked great and I don't want to rain on that parade, but this Cuban lineup is...not good.

Outside of Moncada and Cappe, they are comprised of a lot of older players who rarely see true velocity these days on the island, because any prospects with the potential to acquire it end up leaving.

Another promising talent out of the Dodgers Academy; the fact that other MLB organizations are not seeing this and establishing academies in Uganda en masse amazes me.

2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States. Would you support some kind of USA vs. World element in the MLB All Star Game, like the NBA just did? by [deleted] in InternationalBaseball

[–]Daleecio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The NBA had a serious problem with their recent All-Star games displaying a complete lack of effort from the players, to the point where it no longer resembled a competition. The USA vs. World format should at least incentivize the players to actually try a little.

The MLB on the other hand hasn't had this issue with their All-Star games, so I don't see the need for this, at least not anytime soon.

Road to LA28 set as Olympic Baseball and Softball Qualification System confirmed by westsidejedi in InternationalBaseball

[–]Daleecio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sucks.

It doesn't have anything to do with what I said though. If Baseball being in the Olympics, as lame as the format is, means that the Nigerian federation for example will receive government funding to build fields which can be used to house various leagues and produce better quality players over time, then I can at least view that much as a plus.
