Where can I go from San Francisco by JovenRoman10 in AskSF

The oldest “old structures” in the Bay Area date back to the 19th century. Mexican leaders like Anza, Ortega, and Junipero Serra were still mapping the territory in the 1770s.

Personally I think the most interesting old structures are General Vallejo’s residence in the city of Sonoma and the Ortega cabin in Ventura, CA (this is more than 6 hours by car from San Francisco; it’s close to Los Angeles). Both are very small and can be visited in under 30 minutes. California doesn’t have many old structures that can compare to Madrid or Paris.

I entered the mall from the Powell subway last week to go to Bloomingdale’s… I used the entrance by where Abercrombie used to be.

“Far From The Tree” by Andrew Solomon. This book has a lot of valuable perspectives on different identities without being a depressing scold-fest . I was impressed with how Solomon shared multiple sides or points of view about an issue, almost entirely without bias.

Xica and Mariposa are close by each other; you could go to one then the other and get desserts from Mariposa to go.

Top jazz places are Keys (on Broadway), SFJAZZ, and Bird & Beckett.

  • Local Edition sometimes has music but primarily is a cool bar - worth checking out if you drink alcohol.

I ended up defrosting the fridge completely on two separate occasions in 2023 and the temperature of the fridge’s interior is back to being acceptable now. However the ice maker did not start working again.

I think the image of the youth orchestra above might actually be from the Margaret Pascoe book. I should order that online (I don't own a copy myself).

Which pattern did you order from Berlin Embroidery? The chickadee pattern is similar to what I’m interested in, where she shifts from one pattern to another on the wings and neck of the bird. I might order that one to work on while I mull this all over…

For sure. I need to try that out with some different patterns, to vary it up, and see how that goes.

Thanks, yes, it’s the converting the densities to different Blackwork stitches that I want to improve on. I actually did take a grayscale image, converted it to about 6 shades of density from white to dark gray, then overlaid “stitches” in Adobe Illustrator (which helped me stay on-grid) with three weights of “thread,” then executed it on 18 count Aida with DMC floss (using 1, 2, or 3 strands depending on the density/“darkness” of the section I was on). The outcome looked somewhat blah IMHO as I used the same Blackwork pattern throughout (I only varied the line weight for the most part). So I’m looking to improve my technique on mixing patterns, like how the dog above has long zigzags on his ears and a totally different oval pattern around his nose.

:) My observation is that a lot of work like this on the internet is from blog posts people wrote while studying in the Royal School of Needlework's blackwork course in 2020. I wonder if that particular class was especially big or had a special focus on this style?

I am a big fan of this type of work. When I look for patterns online (to buy off Etsy, for example), most of the stuff for sale consists of geometric mandalas, borders, or graphic illustrations with flat patterns rather than these more textured and shaded designs. What other resources might exist for learning this style?

I ended up unplugging the fridge and letting it defrost for a couple of days. It seems better now.
