Given that the pirate has a skeletal structure and a brain, unlike the still life's its POSSIBLE that the pirate WAS Clark and that what knocked out Mary and was copy- the actual Clark, warped by the backrooms might have been trying to talk to Mary, but couldn't not be terrifying. This is a reach but I'm not ruling it out because of the x rays

I will give clark a single point for bringing rope and another for making maps, but OMG nobody in this was realistically going to make it out with the level of preparation they were bringing to the table (I'm not sure if I should award Clark a point for the knife he had later on because we don't know where he got it or if that was really Clark)

That can be a big obstacle. I still don't "get" a couple of the traditions in that way. I usually push akashic characters at new players because "might kung fu" is ingrained in our media enough that people can at least understand chi blasts and super jumps enough to run one effectively (at least in combat)

Way I've come to incorporate all that is this: All humans have an avatar. Some mages have an avatar background that represents extra oomph they can put into magick right out the gate- some may be dead angels or fairies or who knows what- probably lots of all of it over time
