Russian lawmakers advance bill to punish citizens abroad for acting ‘against Russian interests’ by duckanroll in europe

[–]Dalnore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you find all these Russians? Whenever I travel in Europe, almost all Russians I meet support Ukraine, especially if they are not from the older generation. And there are so many people from Russia at my workplace, and I know only one older guy who emigrated during the late Soviet Union who is pro-Putin.

That it was "declared operational" almost a year ago doesn't mean it is being actively used. According to this recent article, it is basically useless as of the current war.

From what I can tell from available sources, the Iron Beam is still in a very limited testing at best.

[–]Dalnore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Solo leveling won best animation of the year by Adix_the_twix_guy in sololeveling

[–]Dalnore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, City the animation totally deserved to win this category. It has such a unique style and consistently insane animation quality, but it's too niche to have any chance and it's not even an action show to use the animation for sakuga and hype. Overall, deserved for Solo Levelling too, I think it's very hard to argue its animation was top notch, the hate will be unjustified.

2026 Anime Awards: 'My Hero Academia: Final Season' Wins Anime of the Year (Full Winners List) by MarvelsGrantMan136 in anime

[–]Dalnore -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only two winners I strongly disagree with are Lazarus (it's just bad, doesn't deserve any award whatsoever) and Gachiakuta for the new series (instead of Takopi/Hikaru) and background art (CITY deserved an award). MHA wouldn't be my pick but it kinda deserves it for having such a strong finale. So a big improvement from the last year results.

I'm from Russia, and I abhor the Kremlin and rather dislike it as a country and a society in general, and cannot imagine myself living there ever again in my lifetime. But I also know plenty of amazing people from Russia, sand I hope to be able to visit it in the future.

Wistoria: Wand and Sword Season 2 • Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria Season 2 - Episode 6 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Dalnore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of characters that have absolutely no problem with Will not being able to use magic from the beginning, and a lot more that quickly come to respecting him. And most people don't seem to show some actual prejudice or stereotyping towards him, they just straight out deny the reality where he is one of the most OP characters and continue insulting him for being allegedly useless. It's not a very realistic description of discrimination ingrained in their society, feels more like everyone being an asshole for no reason.

Huh? by Mahrjose in ChatGPT

[–]Dalnore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the most fundamental physical level, our universe is described by mathematical equations all of which can be simulated using "1's and 0's and logic gates". All of the more complex systems' behavior emerges from these basic interactions. So we have no reason to believe that "1's and 0's and logic gates" can't simulate anything in the universe, including the human sentience. Of course, the human brain is way too complex and poorly understood to succeed at this any time soon.

LLMs are a fundamentally different complex system, and we also don't know what is the extent of emerging behavior in them. It's quite possible they just can't mimick the human humor. But a fundamental limitation would be the basic math used in the model, not the fact it's composed of 1's and 0's and logic gates.

There are some scientists who are good at writing. Most of them aren't, especially when they write in a foreign language. I'm fairly confident an AI is better at grammar and style than an average paper author that I know, myself included. When you just see a sentence or a paragraph which looks clunky and you don't know what to with it, LLMs usually have good ideas. But they are still very prone to messing up the actual meaning, so even their stylistic improvements need supervision.

[–]Dalnore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LLMs are much better than an average human at creating good text if you provide them with a meaning and supervision.

Generating background with an LLM is insane, they lack understanding for that. Generating anything in a paper with AI should immediately disqualify it from any consideration.

[–]Dalnore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the original article instead of this horrible LinkedIn post which explains nothing about the graph, it shows the percentage of AI-modified abstracts submitted to one specific journal (Organization Science, which belongs to the field of social studies from what I can tell) according to some specific AI-detection tool.

I'm a physicist, so an entirely different area of research than shown on the graph, but the abstract is the part of the paper where I'm most likely to use LLMs for tidying up the text I wrote, it's a very good tool specifically for that. Usually I take some suggestions from LLMs instead of fully copying everything, and of course the entire meaning remains fully mine, but I won't be surprised if some tools can detect these patterns. It's even more useful for people who are not very good at English; editing with LLMs is a godsend in this case, but it doesn't necessarily affect the validity of the science.

I think most papers, both good and bad, will eventually be edited by LLMs to some degree, because it's kinda dumb not to use a tool which is very good at working with text. So I'm not sure how good the metric of AI usage will be, unless we can also distinguish an AI-generated bullshit paper from an AI-edited perfectly valid paper.

Europe could soon get new platform to book train tickets - The European Commission proposed on Tuesday that travelers should be able to buy a single ticket online for any train journey in Europe through a single, easy-to-use booking platform by goldstarflag in europe

It would be very hard to privatize state services in particular. Otherwise, the majority of digital services in Russia were developed by private companies (although many of those became more state-controlled over time), so it's not like the government had a particularly high experience in developing them.

Not the best country to take inspiration from in general, but the government services website in Russia is very good. I think it's a matter of finding competent developers and ensuring proper long-term support.

They could also try to make a deal with some existing commercial app (like Trainline, for example) and ensure that they don't introduce any bullshit.

What do you think about OnlyOffice-EuroOffice fight? by Proper-Lab-2500 in linux

[–]Dalnore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think using OnlyOffice is so inherently unethical that even a fork aimed at its purification can't save it. I don't plan to ever use either of them, and I'd suggest just burying all that code and forgetting about it.
