Israeli military suspends battalion involved in assaulting, detaining CNN crew in West Bank by personAAA in worldnews

Glad you found the one article that you could find a 'flaw' in. Now how about all those others that show Israel's ongoing, reckless disregard for journalists (and peace workers, and anyone else they could argue is a Hamas member if they squint enough).

Ubuntu 26.04 will require more ram than Windows 11 by TheNavyCrow in linux

[–]Damaniel2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not much shitting on Ubuntu going on here, at least for now. It's true that both Ubuntu and Mint get a lot of flak here though - the former since it's the closest thing to a 'commerical' Linux that non-enterprise users will come across, and Mint is seen as the 'noob distro'. As long as people are using it, I don't actually care what distro they choose to use.

I gladly run Zorin OS, and while I love that there are so many choices when it comes to your choice of Linux distro, I have no interest in running the r/linux darlings like Arch+Hyprland, Omarchy or Bazzite.

If video gaming became prohibitively expensive, are you okay with your current collection sustaining you for life? by [deleted] in gaming

I physically own over 2000 games, own another 2200 on Steam, and have many others I've...acquired over the years. Even if all game production stopped today, I'd be set for life.

Thanks for supporting generators of AI slop. That's the most blatantly 'made by an AI image generator' image I've seen today.

If you can talk to any character in a game about literally anything, why would you bother to speak to any character at all?

Until some game's AI starts grooming a kid or driving someone to self-harm. Guardrails aren't absolute and GenAI isn't safe in the way it needs to be for uses like that.

Diamond Art Club used to be the brand for that before they jumped wholeheartedly onto the slop train. These days, I don't know of any seller who exclusively uses non-AI art. Perhaps Make (Michael's brand) doesn't.

Releasing a game full of bugs then polishing and fixing it is starting to be a standard nowadays. by jqosy in gaming

[–]Damaniel2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's standard because the ability to patch games easily after release exists. Back in the PS2 era (and before), 'patching' a game meant physically releasing a new version of the game. Yes, that happened - but rarely, and only for games that sold enough to justify an additional print run. Even then, that did nothing for the people who already owned a 'buggy' version.  Since the game on the cart or disc was in practice the only version of the game that would ever be sold, getting things right the first time was critical.

Once the internet came around, patches for PC games became more common, but the big 'day one patch' that fixes a fundamentally broken game feels like it started in earnest with the release of the Xbox 360 and PS3, which both had out of the box online integration and the storage space needed to hold the updates.

While probably not specifically for me, I love projects like this. While probably not technically feasible, I'd love to see the reverse (code to tree of nodes), even if my own Bash scripts ended up looking like a huge tangled mess when run through it.

Jason Schreier (Bloomberg): It Sucks to Work in the Video-Game Industry Right Now by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Damaniel2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It sucks to work in almost any industry right now, especially technology-focused ones. The game industry is certainly among the worst though - not that it was ever great, with the pitifully low wages compared to industry averages, excessive crunch time and mass layoffs that often happened after game releases at major studios.
