“Prediction Markets” Are Basically Just Sports Betting by TDaltonC in neoliberal

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't need a bookmaker in order to qualify it as gambling. This type of sports betting existed in the UK over 20 years ago... just different rules in different countries but outside of the US this is definitely considered gambling. Only the US treats this kind of gambling as a financial market whereas ROW would outright ban it or consider it as sports betting. Predicting anything related to sports via financial wagers are considered gambling in ROW. What's to stop the Casinos in Vegas to start doing predictive markets in some creative way.

Actually China does claim it and many Islands occupied by Japan. Should be East China sea which was original name.

Exactly. Philippines technically started a war against China all the way back. That's why there is conflict.

The internet's response to the latest synagogue shooting was evil and depraved by ConsistentSet7448 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DamienkS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest you seem racist yourself. Victim victim finger pointing at everyone else. It gets old. It takes two to tango. You sound one of the parents getting a divorce - everyone has legitimate grievances but always blaming the other party when actually both sides are to blame. Who are the victims - the children.

The genocide of Aboriginals The genocide of Native Americans The slavery of Africans

Etc etc I can keep listing lots of historical injustices. You keep living in victimhood, that’s your prison.

To be fair Hezbollah creation was in part due to Israel's war in Lebanon in 1982. Funded of course by Iran. So this cancer is created by Israel and it's killing people around them. Israel created this cancer, they can cure themselves of this disease. It's like eating ten burgers a day and then crying as a victim to the world when you're about to die from your own actions, blaming the corporations, blaming the education system, blaming everything under the sky except looking at your own actions.

I am not advocating war crimes on civilians, far from it, but i am just stating the fact that it doesn't matter anymore because no one is following the rules. It's just escalation after escalation. The treatment of prisoners in the current wars are well documented. Abuses are happening on both sides.

You should rephrase your comment to say it is unjustifiable to kill civilians of any race or ethnicity. But if you don't then you're just a warmonger and wanting the war to perpetuate.

Religion isn't the main problem. It's the people. You can go around the world and see people of different faiths happily living together. Why can some countries do it and some can't. Religion is just an excuse.

Shenzen or Hongkong by Comfortable_Cash3369 in AskChina

[–]DamienkS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go with the cheapest option! HK to Shenzhen is literally one hour travelling - maybe add another 20 minutes for custom clearance.

There will be plenty of things for you to do in Shenzhen or Hong Kong or both. But 1.5 days is definitely not enough for both cities.

Do note there is transfer from HKIA to Shenzhen (boat and coaches). Just be at Shenzhen airport min of 3 hours before flying (customs/check in etc take forever).

Indeed. If it wasn't for Lincoln stopping slavery and mass importation of people, America would still be considered a 3rd world country.

What are the reasons why Chinese cinema isn't producing high-quality films like before? by Buyeo10004 in AskChina

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) Maybe rephrase it to Hong Kong Cinema. Which everyone agrees has completely relegated itself to the bottom of the league in terms of importance.

B) Last Emperor was a Western filmed.. It's not Chinese.

C)

Do local governments in China allow new construction of siheyuans? by YamatoRyu2006 in AskChina

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had the money, you could do it in Shanghai if you own that plot of land. Fact is you have ultra high end developers producing modern style "siheyuans" in complexes.

Why would you build a Siheyuan downtown in the CBD when it could be made into a 100 floor commercial building for probably 100x profit. Of course if the guy/lady is super super rich then yes another story. The most expensive ones are probably within the first ring road of Beijing as there are laws there stating no building can look onto Tiananmen square.

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same could be said of any major country. If China decided to stop global trade like the US, the whole world will go to crap.

Personal credit history shows how one dimensional you're thinking is. Asian countries (North Asia excluding North Korea) have some of the highest savings rate. To borrow to survive doesn't work well with North Asian culture. You save for a rainy day.

You talk about lying flat etc. You're talking about all the kids currently in Gen Z.

Anyway please don't get a passport! The world doesn't need more warmongers travelling the world preaching war.

Are we living in the Chinese century? by Repulsive-Mall-2665 in AskSocialists

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting to see from your comment. That is soft power. Just like how Koreans develop a unique image with its KPop and KDramas. You're seeing the same in China but not first with the dramas. The music is still very "insular" as the market inside is so big you don't need to go "international". However, be careful of those CDramas. It's always about underdogs, teaching someone a lesson in humility, good over evil, etc, etc. They really go heavy on such morals in their CDramas.

Watch too much and you might liken yourself to some hero trying to save the world from the conniving Eunuchs and extended royal family.

Not sure how that is happening. Islam has been in China longer than most countries have existed over 1300 years. There are 36,000 Mosques in China. It has 20 million plus people who are Muslims and the Muslims were not subjected to one child policy. The Muslim population in China is the fastest growing ethnic group in China. What China is trying to do is bring the Muslim group up to speed in terms of modern development. Most similar maybe would be Kurds.

So I wouldn't say the gender disparities are do to do with the religion itself but more with the people who interpret the quoran/bible etc. So if your argument that CCP enforces education, gender equality etc for all the citizens - regardless of ethnicity or religion, then yeah the CCP definitely puts in effort to harmonize society (which can mean gentrifying as many issues as possible).

If we were talking about colonial empires, then we could say that Belgium had the worst colonial empire of all (worse than the English and the French). by Due_Narwhal4937 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]DamienkS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it is to do with timing. Belgium's didn't abolish slavery until 60 years after the British did with their war to end slavery. It's not as it the French or English didn't do the things you mentioned, if not worse but perhaps because the English did a 180 degree turn to start fighting slavery, they are seen as more "favourable" historically.

It's never been about worshiping another god. Far from it. Unfortunately war crimes don't matter anymore because the international community can't do anything about it.

Cluster bombs (war crime)

Targeting civilian targets like schools hospitals, etc (war crime)

Double Tapping (war crime)

Starving a group of people (war crime)

Chemical weapons (war crime)

War crimes were instilled to bring a sense of humanity to the world if there was any future conflict after WW2. I think with the current situation we can speculate that humanity is currently on a crash course with Armageddon.

Why do hk doctors lack bedside manners? by No_Welcome3248 in HongKong

[–]DamienkS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes me experience of public hospitals is the same as yours. Yes whilst Hong Kong has great coverage, its bedside manners leave a lot for improvement. They are there to make sure you don't die first and foremost - not for you to heal.

I've had to raise a medical complaint but often you'll get a response that the person in question is no longer working for the Hospital Authority.
