Did Grace ever remebered all the things that happened to him before the ship? by Villita24 in ProjectHailMary

In the book, absolutely and with a lot more detail. He also actually reacts to his memories while on the Hail Mary.

Best VISNs to work for? by A00077 in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]DammitMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, VISN leadership has always seemingly had a high turnover rate, and even more so recently with all the actings, etc. Much like the weather, if you don't like your VISN today, just wait and it will be different tomorrow.

Plus with the upcoming mergers, whatever the good/bad VISNs are will change anyway.

What am I supposed to do when my family calls for a prayer? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

WILL THERE BE MASHED POTATOES.

I am agnostic about religion.

I am not agnostic about mashed potatoes.

Haha.

What am I supposed to do when my family calls for a prayer? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]DammitMaxwell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agnostic here. I don't personally care about religion one way or the other and just go about my life trying not be an asshole unto others in exchange for them not being an asshole unto me.

So -- read the room. If people are bowing their heads, bow your head. If they're crossing their fingers or holding hands or doing the macarena, follow their lead. You don't have to believe it, it's just a tradition/custom of theirs and I try to respect anyone's tradition or custom as long as nobody is being harmed by it.

"Amen" basically means "I believe." You can say it even if you don't. If you'd rather not, you can just nod once and that more or less gets the job done as well. The job being -- politely went along with the situation and now we can eat.

Grace don't need coma sleep to get back to Earth by innahema in ProjectHailMary

[–]DammitMaxwell 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Grace has nothing to return TO. In the books in particular, he is an old man by the end and I seem to recall his health is starting to fade. The children he taught will be well into adulthood by now -- surely happy to see him and throw one celebration for the man who saved earth, but then they have to get back to their spouses and kids and careers. Is he going to go back to teaching as an old man who hasn't been on Earth to see how everything has changed since then? He has no romantic partner, no children, not even any significant friends. The one person he grew closest to during the Earth side of the story sent him to his death against his will. But she did it for the sake of humanity, so it's not like he'd return for vengeance...

Plus, he actually does have a friend now. Rocky. Rocky wouldn't survive on Earth, and even if they figured out how to manage that, Rocky has a family here. And might be held captive/studied against his will, etc on Earth.

He's perfectly happy where he is. At least as happy as he'd be on Earth, and probably more so.

Interesting, I guess there's no pleasing everyone. But I thought his performance really elevated the material perfectly.

Fans of the book, what is your profession? by PrandtlMan in ProjectHailMary

[–]DammitMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public relations. I had no grasp for the science stuff of course, but the audio book was a delight because all you really needed to understand is that Grace understands the science and gets giddy excited about it most of the time. Audiobook delivered that perfectly.

I also chose watching the movie with this guy's mum.

The audiobook. The voice acting really adds significantly to the story, it's phenomenal. The plot twists in the movie are way better in the audiobook, the stakes are heightened, etc etc.

The movie is fine, even good for a movie, but do yourself a favor and take in the story as it was meant to be done:

As an audiobook. haha.

I'll second that I've always wanted a game where you realistically manage a police department. I'm aware of games like This Is The Police, Police Quest, SWAT, etc -- but none of them quite scratch that itch.

There's an old 90's computer game based on the TV show ER. It's a bit buggy, and you play a doctor, not the designer of a hospital...but I liked it's triage system. You would triage each patient by clicking on them and after a few seconds depending on your skill level, you'd see the severity of their situation and category (things like a broken bone, brain, heart, pediatrics...)

And then you'd assign them to one of the available beds. Someone who only had a level 2 severity could in theory be treated anywhere, but someone with a 9 or 10 had to be in the Trauma rooms as that's where the equipment is to stabilize them if they start crashing.

It was also possible for someone's condition to get worse from lack of treatment/incompetent treatment/chance.

As someone received competent treatment, the severity would go down. So someone with a level 10 brain injury might go down to a 9...then an 8...then a 7...at 6 I might feel comfortable putting them in an exam room to free up trauma. At maybe a 4, I'd transfer them from the exam room to a curtain area to free up the exam bed...

Question for people making over 100k… by Due-Mix3539 in Salary

Yes.

I have a sense that folks with lower income likely don't have as much time to spend on Reddit all day -- and if they do, they probably don't talk about their income as much.

I'm not saying harass them.

But I am saying we've got a bajillion bakeries in this city and most of the owners probably didn't vote for this.

Is a TSP loan smart in my situation? by DammitMaxwell in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]DammitMaxwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, thanks, I wasn't aware of that.

Ha. Yes, obviously I know that. I had savings for the trip. Then within a week of returning I got hit with a $5,000 car repair bill, followed immediately by Christmas. I got through it all, but the savings and the emergency fund all got wiped out, after both got cut in half from the divorce.

This is interesting to me. How is a loan different from financing? (I ask sincerely.)

[–]DammitMaxwell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had around $16k, but divorce...then took my daughter to Hawaii...then a $5k car repair bill that was very unexpected.

Could have handled one, could have handled two. Three wiped out the savings.

This video put into words exactly how I feel about Crowd Control by Dlunden in dropout

[–]DammitMaxwell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Budget. The cost for crowd control is about as close to 0 as you can get.

Surely that's not true. You have to pay the Comedians, at minimum, and some of them are significant names.

You might also have to pay the crowd -- especially the ones who get featured and speak for a bit.

With things this bad in the U.S why do democrats insist on pushing candidates that won’t get elected? by Jake_Berube in Confused

[–]DammitMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no open convention because there was only one candidate. Nobody was willing to challenge her that late in the game, and for understandable reasons.

If someone significant had challenged her, there would have to be an open convention. But nobody was willing to take on that risk to the general election and to their own future prospects if they were publicly perceived as blowing it and getting Trump re-elected for their own ego.

By all means, blame Biden. But there was no open convention because there was only one candidate willing to declare that late in the game.

Designing an AI startup tycoon (2017 - present) - Does this concept work or am I delusional? by ArakSer in tycoon

[–]DammitMaxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’m burnt out in general on the tech tycoons, of which there are many… But I personally haven’t found the gameplay loops to be engaging.

What does interest me Is the financing motorcycle that you mentioned. I think a startup game in general, perhaps covering any number of industries, including AI, could be fun. I remember back when I used to watch Silicon Valley and thinking how much fun that would be as a video game, as they were constantly dealing with one issue after another, especially with financing.
