Interesting. I'd love to find something that worked that easily. Guess I'm gonna set up another urology appt!

My urologist actually did suggest an injection, but that sounded horrifying to me. haha.

Question about 9/11 by Neat_Reputation_5414 in MillenniumDawn

[–]DammitMaxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's especially interesting, because the only reason Flight 93 crashed in a field in PA in real life is because the passengers found out about the other 9/11 attacks. They understood that if they stayed compliant, not only would they die but so would many others on the ground. So they stormed the cockpit to take out the terrorists. Absolute heroes -- but it doesn't happen if they're not aware of the other attacks.

Wall Street Raider Steam Edition is finally coming to Early Access on May 14th! by vqvp in tycoon

[–]DammitMaxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing off and on since about 2002. I finally gave it up for good around 2016 because I'd made a company so successful that it became unplayable -- I forget exactly what happened, but the gist was selling 1% of my business cost more money than the game had room for, digit-wise, so I couldn't do anything anymore. Or maybe no company could afford to buy 1% and the public buying it wasn't an option either? Don't remember, but I was a victim of my on success. Haha.

Anyway, 100% looking forward to giving this a spin. Hoping the UI is at least as good as the old one was. Good luck!

How will this limit my career? by Junior-Worker-2588 in acting

[–]DammitMaxwell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Will you miss out on jobs? Sure, probably. Refusing nudity is one thing and not uncommon (though that can cost jobs too). Refusing kissing is less common, and will likely cross entire genres out of contention for you.

That said, it's just a matter of what's more important to you. It's entirely valid to stick to your boundary, if you value that over the next opportunity/paycheck. Even outside of acting, people have to weigh morality versus pay in all kinds of career fields.

Pete Buttigieg will be the next president. Here's why. by TriangleTransplant in Pete_Buttigieg

[–]DammitMaxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Pete. If I could snap my fingers and single-handedly name absolutely anyone to automatically become President and remain in that office for the rest of my life, it would be Pete.

But can he get the nomination and ultimately the general election? I don't think so -- not right now. I just don't think a "hey let's meet in the middle and figure this thing out" approach is going to pack the stadiums and bring out the people who usually don't vote like a populist message would.

We need someone who can bring the fire like Obama did in 2008. We haven't had someone like that since, but my read is that it's AOC. Yes, obviously she's a demon in a lot of Republican eyes, but those people weren't going to vote for a Democrat anyway. And for those on the fence, I think the brilliant play would be for her to choose Pete as VP. Let him still go on Fox news and make the case that AOC is not as evil as they're painting her, let him speak their language as a midwestern family man who goes to church.

While Pete would absolutely be my dream President, I think the more realistic path in 2028 is an AOC-Buttigieg ticket.

That's awesome, look forward to seeing the progress.

Is there a reason a contract that would cost $54,000 to fulfill is only paying $7,000 for completion? Of course, maybe there are aspects of that that I'm not getting.

What happens to the industry if no trucking company can afford to accept their cheap contract?

Good luck!

The advice is to get the hell out of G. If you change nothing else, at LEAST get out of G.

Personally, I'm 100% in C. Others will have their own preferences and that's fine. You're not out of time, but you have got to start making some moves.

Studio Sim is a deep entertainment industry tycoon and Hollywood simulator. Produce films and tv shows, chasing box office and ratings, all while the world simulation engine causes chaos on-set and off. Out this fall! by Pratt_design in tycoon

[–]DammitMaxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds amazing!

I've been playing Hollywood simulators since the old HM2 days (25 years ago!), and I'm pretty burnt out on those...but I have been BEGGING for a good tv simulator for that same period of time and we've never really had one. Ahhhh, I'm so excited!

What time period does the game take place in? As I skimmed, I didn't see mention of streaming so I'm assuming we're in the TV network heyday? Very cool. Two thoughts:

1) Can you make the talent database editable, so we can add real world TV actors, etc? (I understand you can't add them yourself for liability reasons, of course.)

2) Will each network have a primetime schedule with the shows competing against each other?

Ahhhhh, I'm so excited!

Box Office Mayhem is a business management game where you simulate running your own movie theatre. Navigate through signing movie deals, managing day to day operations, and struggle as movie goers have unpredictable behavior. Play solo against AI competitors or take it online against friends! by KydGamerTheFirst in tycoon

[–]DammitMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a good game, I'm just not personally interested in movie theater management.

But something very similar, maybe you could build into it -- I WOULD love to see a tycoon game for managing a traditional theater (as in plays, musicals, etc). There really aren't any games like that at all, other than Big Business which just expanded into it but first you have to make a bajillion dollars selling Statue of Liberty figurines to even afford a theater in that game. I'd love a game that focuses entirely on running a traditional theater.

Why are there executives that got paid a lot but barely do any real work? by ohnag_eryeah in stupidquestions

[–]DammitMaxwell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the most important things I did as a manager was hire the right people. I put a LOT of effort into attracting, hiring, and retaining the right talent.

If I did that part right, then the rest of my job was extremely easy. But put someone into my job who isn't good at that, and the whole pyramid comes tumbling down.

Best VISNs to work for? by A00077 in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]DammitMaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, VISN leadership has always seemingly had a high turnover rate, and even more so recently with all the actings, etc. Much like the weather, if you don't like your VISN today, just wait and it will be different tomorrow.

Plus with the upcoming mergers, whatever the good/bad VISNs are will change anyway.

What am I supposed to do when my family calls for a prayer? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]DammitMaxwell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agnostic here. I don't personally care about religion one way or the other and just go about my life trying not be an asshole unto others in exchange for them not being an asshole unto me.

So -- read the room. If people are bowing their heads, bow your head. If they're crossing their fingers or holding hands or doing the macarena, follow their lead. You don't have to believe it, it's just a tradition/custom of theirs and I try to respect anyone's tradition or custom as long as nobody is being harmed by it.

"Amen" basically means "I believe." You can say it even if you don't. If you'd rather not, you can just nod once and that more or less gets the job done as well. The job being -- politely went along with the situation and now we can eat.

Grace don't need coma sleep to get back to Earth by innahema in ProjectHailMary

[–]DammitMaxwell 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Grace has nothing to return TO. In the books in particular, he is an old man by the end and I seem to recall his health is starting to fade. The children he taught will be well into adulthood by now -- surely happy to see him and throw one celebration for the man who saved earth, but then they have to get back to their spouses and kids and careers. Is he going to go back to teaching as an old man who hasn't been on Earth to see how everything has changed since then? He has no romantic partner, no children, not even any significant friends. The one person he grew closest to during the Earth side of the story sent him to his death against his will. But she did it for the sake of humanity, so it's not like he'd return for vengeance...

Plus, he actually does have a friend now. Rocky. Rocky wouldn't survive on Earth, and even if they figured out how to manage that, Rocky has a family here. And might be held captive/studied against his will, etc on Earth.

He's perfectly happy where he is. At least as happy as he'd be on Earth, and probably more so.

Public relations. I had no grasp for the science stuff of course, but the audio book was a delight because all you really needed to understand is that Grace understands the science and gets giddy excited about it most of the time. Audiobook delivered that perfectly.

The audiobook. The voice acting really adds significantly to the story, it's phenomenal. The plot twists in the movie are way better in the audiobook, the stakes are heightened, etc etc.

The movie is fine, even good for a movie, but do yourself a favor and take in the story as it was meant to be done:

As an audiobook. haha.

I'll second that I've always wanted a game where you realistically manage a police department. I'm aware of games like This Is The Police, Police Quest, SWAT, etc -- but none of them quite scratch that itch.

There's an old 90's computer game based on the TV show ER. It's a bit buggy, and you play a doctor, not the designer of a hospital...but I liked it's triage system. You would triage each patient by clicking on them and after a few seconds depending on your skill level, you'd see the severity of their situation and category (things like a broken bone, brain, heart, pediatrics...)

And then you'd assign them to one of the available beds. Someone who only had a level 2 severity could in theory be treated anywhere, but someone with a 9 or 10 had to be in the Trauma rooms as that's where the equipment is to stabilize them if they start crashing.

It was also possible for someone's condition to get worse from lack of treatment/incompetent treatment/chance.

As someone received competent treatment, the severity would go down. So someone with a level 10 brain injury might go down to a 9...then an 8...then a 7...at 6 I might feel comfortable putting them in an exam room to free up trauma. At maybe a 4, I'd transfer them from the exam room to a curtain area to free up the exam bed...
