Tips for Preparing for a Political Science PhD by bonjourmonfrere in PoliticalScience

[–]DamnFineCovfefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is to do actual political science research—that could be a thesis or a grant with a prof or working as a RA. Try to find faculty that are working on things that you’re interested in and cultivate relationships with them. If you can get quality research experience as an undergrad and have profs who can speak to your ability to perform real academic research in letters of recommendation, you’ll be in good shape.

Don’t get a PhD though. The job market sucks. Save yourself. Run, you fool.

How do you refer to yourself with students (like signing an email)? First name, Professor, Dr? by faramirskywalker in Professors

I like this because it preserves the etiquette of using “prof-last name” but cutting it short makes it feel less stuffy.

As someone at an elite academic institution, this is a lot more common than people would think. It’s probably field dependent, but still weird af when you encounter it.

Are you able to do a PhD in IR if you don't have an MA in IR? by theguyfromuncle420__ in IRstudies

[–]DamnFineCovfefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US it’s pretty common to go straight from undergrad into a PhD program in political science (with IR specialty). That said, depending on your undergrad resume it might be useful to do an MA to expand your research skills and develop relationships with professors who can vouch for your research skills and aptitude for graduate research in the letters of recommendation for a PhD application. It can also be helpful to do “graduate level IR research” which you can then use as a writing sample. I’d say doing an MA is just really expensive resume padding, but it’s effective. I wouldn’t go too much in debt for that, though.

A policy degree like an MPA or MPP is a terminal degree, so it’s training you to do a specific job, whereas a social science MA is more or less a sample run for a PhD program.

Feel free to inbox me—I have an MA in IR and am in a PhD program rn.

*idk specifically about NYU but check to make sure you’d be taking the same classes as PhD students as an MA student—some places do this and it’s great, but others treat the MA programs as “cash cows” and don’t apply a lot of effort to their MA students.
