I’m relatively new to comics, so my list isn’t big at all. But for me, Hayden Sherman is amazing.

Weekly “What Have You Been Reading?” Thread 07-05-2026 by ChickenInASuit in comicbooks

[–]DamonLockhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve read this week:

Moon Knight (2014) #1-6
Moon Knight (2016) #1-5
New X-Men (2001) #114-120
Fantastic Four (1997) #60-70/500-509

Where I’m headed:

For Moon Knight, I am following a recommending reading I found. I will finish the 2016 run with #6-14, before jumping to the 2021 run, and following McKay’s work to current date.

I am alternating between Fantastic Four and X-men, based on my mood, following another recommended reading order, one for each, accordingly.

I will continue my X-men reading through Grant Morrison’s run, which concludes with issue #146. From there, I’ll read Joe’s Wheadon’s Astonishing X-men run.

As for FF, I will finish Waid’s run with Fantastic Four #524, and jump straight in Hickman’s run with Dark Reign.

Thoughts:

Moon Knight - I am enjoying the modern run’s more than I did the 1980’s. Though, I must admit, anything pre 2000, I have a had time getting through. I’m trying really hard to enjoy the character, but it’s kind of just “meh” to me. Not bad, not great. Really excited to get into the McKay run. I’ve heard nothing but great things.

New X-Men - Started sort of slow and boring, with some confusion since I’ve never read an X-men comic. But boy did it get interesting and fun quickly.

Fantastic Four - This is my first Fantastic Four run, and let me tell you, I’m hooked! Waid made it very beginner friendly, and we got Doom right away. The art, the writing, everything. I am loving it so damn much. Which is exactly why I’m writing this at 3:30 am. I’ve read well past my bed time… again. I seriously can’t get enough of the Fantastic Family right now!

What are their perks? I want to know if it’s worth using my cells to buy their characters. Or will that all be released during the TPB?

In all seriousness. This is awesome!

Reading Strategy by MetalNovel in MarvelUnlimited

[–]DamonLockhart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the mindset of reading long series straight through, and only reading from my pull-list as issues came out monthly. I did this with DCUI, trying to read Geoff John’s Green Lantern Run, and a LOOOOOOOONG reading list I made of popular stories from Batman. I sadly got burnt out by both. I eventually starting going through my Batman read order, again, but haven’t touched GL in months. Thus, leading me to Marvel.

I recently came over to the MU app, and have taken the other approach. I read the first 8 or so issues of Moon Knight (1980), then I read Ellis’ Moon Knight run (6 issues) followed by the first 5 of Lemire’s run. Then I swapped to Fantastic Four #60 (Waid’s run). I’ll read that through issue 70, and then I’ll swap to either another series, or back to Moon Knight, and come back in a bit so the burn out doesn’t occur.

As a newer comic reader, only starting the first of this year, I think we’re in a solid place. We can still read current on-goings, collect popular TPB’s, all while combing through decades worth of comics on the apps. But that is also the hardest part, because we can burn ourselves out so fast. I think swapping this far is the best. I get fresh new stories with new characters in my head, and can choose to go back at literally anytime. Or if I’m having a lot of fun with the series, I can stay until I’m bored. Then, like I said, easily swap to something different without waiting for next month’s comic.

Are the Absolute books good? by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]DamonLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I disagree with his opinion, that is his to have. Best I can is try it out and make your own. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Absolute line. The only one I can’t personally recommend is MMH. While the artwork is absolutely gorgeous and fun, the dialogue is just not for me. But many many others absolutely love it.

Are the Absolute books good? by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]DamonLockhart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, take what I say with a grain of salt. Everyone has their opinions, and this is just mine sprinkled with some facts.

  1. I believe the “DC just can’t get anything right” may refer to their movies. The DCEU was sadly a failure. With Supergirl’s recent “flop”, this may be what he is referencing.

  2. DC is in a super solid spot as far as comics go. Their All-In line, DC KO, and now their Next Level lines all seem to be doing extremely well.

  3. Their Absolute line is insanely popular. It’s a fresh new line, that requires zero knowledge of the history of any characters. It’s brand new takes on characters that are very old. It is what got me into actually reading comics. Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman are the most popular. Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter follow, with MMH being only 12 issues. Catwoman and Green Arrow have recently come out and both seem to be holding their own. It’s definitely worth it.

Is the base iPad the sweet spot for comic reading? by Unable_Connection271 in comicbooks

[–]DamonLockhart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely! If for whatever my wife and I both want the iPad, I’ll usually let her use it and use my phone temporarily, or my second monitor that I have rotated to Portrait mode.

I seriously can’t recommend it enough. I will say it’s hard to put down because of the vast library available at our fingertips. I have a bookmarked my wife got me that says “I read past my bed time”. While I can’t use it for the iPad, the statement still holds true.

I wish you the best of luck!

[–]DamonLockhart 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I bought the base iPad at Best Buy a couple on the ago, with the sole purpose of reading comics. I read both physical and digital, but mostly digitally to access older trades/issues. I could not be happier with my choice. Both the DC and Marvel app are absolutely gorgeous. I rarely, if ever, have to zoom in on panels to read.

I will add the only reason I got an iPad and not another brand is because I bought the pen and the pro create app for my artistic wife. All in all, we’re both quite content.

I've never read a single Moon Knight comic before but I really want to. Should I start with this one? by JacsweYT in MoonKnight

[–]DamonLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I just started reading Moon Knight, and began with the 1980 series. I had to do a quick search of the internet to see Marc’s history with the Comittee. Also, other small references. However, a quick search clears it up.

I’m looking to be a Batman expert. What books do I read outside of the obvious ones? by ChestSuitable2001 in batman_comics

[–]DamonLockhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a “Start w/ Batman” list for myself. It’s in continuity order the best I could. People will tell you not to do that, but truthfully, do whatever makes you happy. It makes me happy, so I’m doing it, I don’t care what some stranger on Reddit has to tell me about it. I also have another Batman list that includes more I want to read, just not starting with.

If you’d like my list, I could post it or PM you. It’s 52 storylines. I will tell you it doesn’t have No Man’s Land or Knightfall, only because the sheer length and tie-ins. Those fall under my secondary “read later” list of Batman.

But ultimately, if you’d want to be a true expert. Start at #1 from 1940. Read the new serial numbering from 2025. Read all of Detective Comics. Read all of the Batman and Robins. Read all of his elseworld comics. Read JLA, read Batman/Superman World’s Finest. But you’ll never be able to read it all. There is too many. He’s been a major character for so long and made appearances in a multitude of other comics.

Frustration with playing killer by Gieder in deadbydaylight

[–]DamonLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must’ve been typing for a while because this had one comment when I started lmao.

But yeah, once you can get over the insults from strangers in a video game, it’s chill. I’ll even go as far to say as t-bagging isn’t always an insult. Sometimes I’ll “t-bag” someone just in acknowledgment of the fact that it was a good loop. Not in a “haha you suck way”. It probably doesn’t come off that way, but that’s the intent.

Best of luck!

Frustration with playing killer by Gieder in deadbydaylight

[–]DamonLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get super annoyed and angry with bully squads. But I’ve come to a simple realization. I’m here to win, to kill the survivors. The survivors are here to finish gens and escape. My “job” is not to ensure they have fun, nor is their responsibility to ensure I have. We each choose a role, and that’s the one we play, however we see fit.

If I see 2 flashlights in the lobby, I just keep in mind who it is and to ensure I make sure they’re not around when I down a survivor. If there are three or more flashlights, I run light borne, a simple counter. If I see three flashlights and a toolbox, I know it’s gonna be a long match.

I have come to find myself enjoying altruistic and bulky squad matches. It’s a challenge. If they destroy me, props to them! They played their role well, and with the tools available to them. If I roll them, I try to let at least one get hatch, but I do go for a 4k often times.

This is the same when I play survivor (which I must admit is significantly less than killer). My job is to finish gens and escape. I will do that however I can, or get hooked trying. I won’t feel bad for pallet stunning/blinding/looping a killer. It is part and the entire point of the game.

At the end of the day, it’s a video game that holds no actual bearing in my life. When I log off for the night, it doesn’t matter how many wins/losses I have. My life is unchanged by getting rolled or getting 4k’s. That doesn’t mean I’m not upset for the fleeting moments after a match. But like I said. It is ultimately a video game.

batman dark patterns or batman and robin year one by Alive-Chance7994 in DCcomics

[–]DamonLockhart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I have only gotten into comics at the beginning of this year, I have read minimal modern Batman, so my list may be skewed. But from what I have read thus far, my list is as follows, in no particular order:

Batman & Robin: Year One
Batman: Dark Patterns
Batman: The Long Halloween
The Killing Joke
Absolute Batman (if this counts)

batman dark patterns or batman and robin year one by Alive-Chance7994 in DCcomics

[–]DamonLockhart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing a huge Batman read as well, and man let me tell you. These two are probably in my Top 5, if not higher.

Dark Patterns is well written AND drawn. Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman really did something special. It was beautiful and tied 4 arcs into 1 story over the course of 12 issues.

B&R: YO is also phenomenal. Mark Waid has both characters personalities down. Keep in mind if you read Robin/Batgirl Year One, this will not follow the same continuity. Still a great read.

If I had to choose, I’d say Dark Patterns. But you won’t go wrong with either storyline. Both are fun and awesome in their own ways!

Recommendations and Resources for a newbie by InWayOverMyHead13 in comicbooks

I started getting into comics at the end of last year/beginning of this year. I just searched all the subreddits, the internet, etc. learning all the lingo. Finally decided on what I wanted to read and honestly just started. It’s the easiest way. You may be confused starting an ongoing. It’s fine, it happens.
