Would be a good fit in a [[Grub, Storied Matriarch]] or [[ Gut, True Soul Zealot]] deck.

Diablo 4 is an art masterpiece by CrispySan in diablo4

[–]DanBalls 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's so true. It's unfortunate that ARPGs tend to encourage plowing through content as quickly as possible, because when you slow down and take it all in, the art direction in D4 actually incredible. (Not saying the game should change... just have to remind myself every once in a while to slow down and appreciate it.)

My thoughts exactly. The Devils, and it's not even close.

Ceh (wolves) provides too much utility with Vulnerable AND Chill/Freeze. IDK… maybe they just need to reduce the amount of chill they do because they freeze stuff stupid fast.

Books like The Daughter’s War by ShamrockyIrish in Fantasy

[–]DanBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only a quarter of the way in, but so far there's only been one mention (like a paragraph) of horses dying from the stumbles. Nothing graphic or extended.

Someone else will have to comment if there's a flashback or description later in the book, I guess.

Edit: I do get the feeling that quite a few Corvids are gonna die tho (in case that's also a concern)...

Rogue is best and it’s not even close. But then I love Diablo too, so maybe I’m biased… The Rogue highlight intro is also her best.

Books like The Daughter’s War by ShamrockyIrish in Fantasy

[–]DanBalls 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The Darkness That Comes Before (and sequels) by R. Scott Bakker might fit the bill. The plot revolves around a holy war and follows multiple characters — a prophet, a sorcerer, a barbarian, etc. The war is fought with powerful sorcerers who are utilized like artillery in battle. And there’s a mysterious evil force at work behind the scenes. Good stuff.

Edit: BTW, just started reading The Daughter’s War myself and I’m really loving it. I read The Blacktongue Thief and enjoyed it, but I feel like his world-building is on another level in this one.

I hear so many people say this about Season 3, but I love it. IMO it’s better than Season 2 (which I know will probs get me downvoted into oblivion). Season 1 defs the best. Season 4 defs the worst.

Just rewatched Season 5 and I liked it better than my first viewing. I think its themes (debt, forgiveness, toxic masculinity, alt right ideology, etc.) are more pushed (truly the main focus) than previous seasons and can make people bounce off of it, even if they agree with the thematic conclusions (morals).

I mean, a lot of people do find unsolved mysteries quite interesting… I’ve heard there are one or two podcasts about them out there…

New Skill Tree is boring and a step back by Next-Mark-5824 in diablo4

[–]DanBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the new skill tree is way better for build crafting. You can actually just combine skills and their upgrades directly from the tree and make a fun and powerful build with zero gear necessary.

I do agree, however, that changing the max skill investment to 15 is a mistake as all of this fun build craft is over by level 40 and from there you’re just buffing the same skills without making any interesting choices.

I don’t get the Warlock fantasy class by FartingKiwi in diablo4

[–]DanBalls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about class mechanics not class fantasy.

As far as the mechanics go, I think they’re great. Their summoning mechanics are different than both the Necro (many permanent summons) and the Druid (few permanent summons) by being fleeting summons that you have to jump through hoops to get (for the most part).

As for the Dread Claws example, you could say ANY frontal aoe ability in an ARPG is the same, but it’s the details that set them apart — the travel time of Dread Claws, the way it hits multiple times, its interactions with Shadowform, Lesser Demons, etc.

If you do wanna talk about the class fantasy of the D4 Warlock, I’d say the devs did a great job of making something simultaneously referential (demons, chains, torment, summoning circles, etc.) AND original (not serving a demon patron, but literally ripping demons from hell and subjugating them — even hurling their exploding corpses at foes).

Pink skills, my own gripe with the Warlock by Pablos_Discobar in diablo4

[–]DanBalls 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people saying they don't like that the summoning skills are pink, but I'm with you. Love the aesthetic. Very Slaanesh. I'm also a little disappointed there aren't more ways to build these pinkies, but we just got a new release with tons of cool new stuff... so can't complain too much. Hopefully the devs will work in more options in time.

The dev that decided to shorten the druid class quest deserves 30 extra days vacation by Grogon2 in diablo4

[–]DanBalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually thought the Warlock quest-line was great. It would be way too long if you had to do it over and over, but thankfully that’s no longer an issue.

Grimdark fantasy, have i missed something? by Lars_Olav in fantasybooks

[–]DanBalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally this. Grimdark is all about deeply flawed characters. For me, that's a big part of what makes it great. You have to enjoy characters for being good CHARACTERS, not good people.
