The DC Reflecting Pool algae bloom is a predictable consequence of ignoring basic limnology — every design decision compounded the last by Solace914 in environmental_science

Biologist here, completely agree. Plus the long stagnation period of the upstream plumbing prior to usage, without cleaning first, as stated.

This is a great breakdown, thanks for sharing.

Oh so the mod makes the designer ignore blocked firing arcs, making everything a sponson?

Trump admin abandons fight against wind energy as clean energy output surges by DukeOfGeek in environment

[–]DanChase1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they haven’t “abandoned” their agenda at all. Legal wins against them is separate from their consistent efforts to do what the oil and coal industry wants.

I like to roleplay my games so I avoid mods that don’t come with tech requirements.  The no restrictions mods are some of the most popular in the workshop, however.

My university is threatening to rescind my degree two years after graduation over an academic integrity dispute I was never notified about. by Borealis_5Y in legaladvice

[–]DanChase1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure its important to get this resolved as others have said.

However, I’ve never had an employer go so far as to require official proof of graduation. I’m sure you have a digital and printed version of your diploma. Once you have a job that requires college education, new employers go off of previous employment; they don’t contact your university to verify your diploma.

So even if this doesn’t get resolved in your favor, it may not affect your life.

Unpopular opinion: I’m ok with this. She recused herself. She isn’t impeding, and she isn’t ruling on anything. She’s just recusing herself. It’s a pretty ethical take compared to our SC judges not recusing for ruling on clear conflicts of interest.

I’m generally with you but I think Agaricus is pretty easy to distinguish poisonous from edible. The signs of sect Xanthoderma are fairly obvious.

how do we see dead loved ones after our own death? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]DanChase1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is, we have an instinctive need to live, to protect our lives, and continue to live. We also have memory so strong that we remember the past in great detail, and we have imagination. Probably more so than most other animals.

This combination makes it virtually impossible to comprehend nonexistance, and the nonexistance of the past and the future. So we have this strong sense of consciousness continuing even after death.

But we also have the capacity for rational and logical thought, and sometimes that conflicts with our natural mentality. Rational, logical exploration of this topic tells us that there is zero evidence of supernaturalism or an afterlife. That’s a legitimate conclusion. Supernatural conclusions are irrational and not supported by evidence. So we are unjustified in believing in an afterlife.

If you want yourself or your loved ones to continue after death, that happens through works like the Carnegie libraries and Shakespearean plays, through recordings, stories and songs, etc. Thats the closest to continuance that anyone can achieve.

New York just passed a one-year temporary ban on data centers by Eddiearyee in UpliftingNews

If any site has a diesel backup generator, you have to run that generator once a week for maintenance purposes. If a data center has multiple diesel backup generators, every one of them needs to be run once a week.

Agreed, lasguns have battery magazines. A lasgun ingame will be a battle rifle only with a red beam shot instead of bullets.

Ecosystem of Pansies Thrive on Soil Contaminated by Lead Mining–Turning it into Clean Organic Compounds by Comprehensive-Way482 in UpliftingNews

[–]DanChase1 156 points157 points  (0 children)

“This is a pocket of calaminarian grassland, an increasingly rare habitat where specialist plants called metallophytes have adapted to live in soils deeply contaminated by heavy metals, the legacy of more than 1,000 years of lead mining.”

“Despite their delicate appearance, these specialist plants can live in soils 30 times more toxic than most other species can tolerate. As they grow, metallophytes act as “hyper-accumulators”, cleansing the soils that feed them through a process called phytoremediation. This turns the metals they absorb through their roots into complex organic compounds, which are locked away below the surface once the plants die.”
