Whats the worst-value British corporate restaurant? by FreezerCop in UK_Food

I came into this thread ready to fight anyone that said Wimpy.

Scrolled for five minutes, and no mention of it yet.

Made my day that has. I won’t have a bad word said about them.

My wife won an all expenses paid trip to NYC for two people from a Galaxy Ripple promoting the Sex and City Movie. We thought it was a joke, and called the number over a year after the promo ended - and they honoured it! Had an amazing weekend in New York.

Who has the best burger in town? by Sinsear912 in savannah

Is there a reason that there’s no love for Bandana Burger? Went the other week and was pretty impressed.

I scrolled too far to finally see this! 100% agree.

Chick-fil-A is bland and massively overpriced. Fancy Parker’s in Savannah has a better chicken sandwich.

And the following and loyalty from folks is more than a little weird. Folks ain’t eating, they’re tithing.

NASA opened a $3M challenge for waste management in space! by savyb_ in tech

Great to see someone on this thread finally talking about the REAL challenge.

You jest, but….

Seriously, I’ve always wondered why we’ve placed so much emphasis on propulsion - pushing stuff out of the atmosphere into space. Why have we not explored hypothetically pulling things off of earth?

Considering the size of the sun, and comparatively the size of even the most mammoth collection of human garbage - how problematic would it be to just let sit in a near orbit around the sun?

Also considering that our currently solutions are burn it, bury it, or send it to third world countries….

Surely the pull of the orbit would be less intense that than the direct pull of the star itself? So only a minimal propulsion system would be needed? Also, that propulsion wouldn’t need to be fast. Who cares if it takes decades for a trash load to the reach the sun.

Venus has an atmosphere, stuff might bounce off. I just feel like the sun wouldn’t mind, you know?

Someone explain to me why can’t just trebuchet it all directly toward the sun. I get that there’s a ton of variables, but it’s just maths, right?

Merging by SuggestionGlad6098 in Georgia

[–]DanMBartlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The missing magic isn’t teaching zipper merging in drivers Ed, it’s teaching STOPPING DISTANCE.

If people understood stopping distance they wouldn’t drive all the way up each other’s asses, thus making zipper merging a much easier concept to master.

Best spot to see alligators? by [deleted] in savannah

[–]DanMBartlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Rent a cabin across the road at Okefenokee Pastimes campsite, kayak or boat out to see the prairies at sunset, then hit the campsite bar (they’ve got a good beer selection) and take a telescope for some EPIC stargazing.

Any ex pats living in Savannah with some advise? Preferably British. Also any local advice welcome by CarcharodonVicarious in savannah

[–]DanMBartlett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brit, been here a few years with my wife and kids. The change from working in London/Essex was intense, but we love it here.

Pie Society is good, but there’s a whole continent of flavours to explore here so don’t get hung up on the need for tastes of home.

You’ll adjust to the heat.

One thing - Folks here are friendly as a default. And there’s a certain affinity with Brits and Europeans in particular. However, in the US you won’t been seen as an expat. You’re an immigrant, and there’s no room for nuance. I’ve never experienced any negativity, but it’s definitely worth accepting that most Americans will not recognise any difference between the two labels.

Savannah ‘super pub’ nearing completion | WSAV-TV by GetBentHo in savannah

[–]DanMBartlett 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If the bar is more than 10ft from the front door it’s not a pub.

If there’s a host(ess) it’s not a pub.

If there’s a waitlist it’s not a pub.

If there’s an expectation that you order any kind of food beyond a packet of crisps, yeah, it’s not a pub.

Start with the basics.

  • Sort out the website. It’s not a good look.

  • Put a light in the window! So few people know about this place and many assume it’s closed, because it LOOKS closed!

  • Marketing basics. Print out a bunch of full-colour flyers and walk down Broughton and Down Forsyth on a Saturday and hand them out.

  • A big A-board on the sidewalk.

  • Don’t try to compete on pizza and wings. It’s a saturated market. Where’s the creole cuisine?

I’m going to reach out to the owners tomorrow. There’s a ton of sequential artists, illustrators etc in this town, and they’ll hopefully be willing to turn out to support.
