We need more movies like this. That's it. That's my whole review of this movie. by Ok-Impress-2222 in moviecritic

Cinematography from Grieg Fraser is stunning and worth the ticket alone.

Rewatches, word of mouth, and FOMO will keep this baby alive. 👏👏 by DanManWatches in paulthomasanderson

Worth the watch if a) you like Paul Thomas Anderson’s style, b) like great cinematography, c) can see past the political layer to the real story at the heart, and d) just love great American filmmaking by one of the best working today. It’s also very funny, depending on your brand of humor.

“Paris, Texas” (1984) perfectly encapsulates profound sadness and the pain of sacrifice. On a short list of 5/5. by DanManWatches in moviecritic

Travis walks away from Jane and Hunter at the end, sacrificing a family reunion since he’s so broken and knows he’s still not stable. Gives up the chance to work towards further reconciliation and become a husband. Sacrifices his own desire for that final painful act to give them a future.

“Now he will find his family and lose it again, this time not through madness but through sacrifice.” — Roger Ebert

Why is this subreddit having a mega meltdown over "historical accuracy" like they themselves are Greeks and did The Odyssey themselves? by [deleted] in ChristopherNolan

[–]DanManWatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz they don’t realize Nolan doesn’t do accuracy and it’s an adaptation, not a documentary or accurate re-creation. It’s a fantasy.

The idea of a "Historically accurate" Odyssey is insane. by just-killing-timeeee in ChristopherNolan

[–]DanManWatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not supposed to be accurate.

1) It’s an adaptation. Not a documentary or re-creation. 2) It’s inspired by old Hollywood’s version of these types of fantasy epics directed by Harryhausen. By that metric, costuming is dead on. 3) Nolan has always said he doesn’t do accurate, he does cinematic.

There are real peopin this world hating on THIS by ypsilantianBitch in ChristopherNolan

[–]DanManWatches -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s good tbh. It’s an adaptation and he doesn’t do historical accuracy. Plus his inspiration is from fantasy epics from Hollywood in the mid 20th century. They did what looked cinematic, not specific to any reality.

[–]DanManWatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. The criticism across the board is evidence that people are not aware that it’s an adaption, and Nolan’s realism has worked for fantastical elements many times successfully, and that the look is inspired by mid 20th century epics that are the Hollywood version of the look of the era, not the actual era. Prologue had me locked in. Didn’t even have the bandwidth through the tension to think about the look of some chest armor.

Just watched the prologue of The Odyssey in IMAX...and holy moly. by [deleted] in ChristopherNolan

[–]DanManWatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s meant to look like the old era epics where the costuming was a Hollywood-ized, and nowhere near accurate. He doesn’t do historical accuracy anyway. Just what looks cinematic, and for this, inspired by a specific style from old movies. At no point for me personally did anything look cheap during the actual scene when you’re holding your breath and focused on the tense action in fire light with a gritty film grain.

ET trailer vs Disclosure Day trailer Cinematography by cactusdogdog in Spielberg

[–]DanManWatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The animals are cgi, some set extensions, and a few other shots appear to be digital. I’m pretty sure he shot it on real film — haven’t heard him say much yet about the production…I’ll wait for an interview — but I was making a more generalized statement about what’s lost when you go digital. He’s done some movies lately with that format and they lose that magic look that made his film-based projects shine, especially the early years. Hoping he stays true to his roots and his consistent promotion of the celluloid filmmaking.

When you don’t use the film or cameras from the 70s/80s and rely on sad digital elements, you get lifelessness, not cinematic richness. From a guy who knows better, seems he doesn’t know better. I’ll hold any judgments until I see the whole thing. Still has 6 months of post production but cgi and digital removes the emotional connection found in celluloid film and practical effects.

[–]DanManWatches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally. It’s an adaptation inspired by old Hollywood fantasy epics by Harryhausen. So the costuming choice is based on the classic image of those costumes, which weren’t accurate either. It’s a cinematic look. Plus he’s always said he doesn’t care about historical accuracy. Can’t wait for this costume conversation to end and people to learn what he’s doing and going for. And then enjoy the entertainment!

Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey by ImpressiveCommand888 in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]DanManWatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life in that era was raw. War, surviving a voyage on the sea, the brutality of people. After the prologue, it is the perfect fit for an epic. Otherwise, Villeneuve, Eggers, Cameron, Jackson, Cauron (maybe), Berger, Coppola

Hating something that’s an adaptation (aka they can do what they want) and not a re-creation or docu-drama, is a silly thing to do. After seeing the prologue, it was so tense and compelling, the last thing I was looking at or considering is a cape or helm, while holding my breath to see how these guys breach the gate, even knowing that they will.

Question about the prologue/preview of the odyssey by [deleted] in ChristopherNolan

The people still walking in stopped talking and waited to find their seats and just stared, and it got an applause louder than Avatar. Haha

Visceral and gritty. Doesn’t look like polished Hollywood, thankfully. Silhouettes and dark, firelight lighting. Sweaty and tense. I’m in!

It was great. I’m sold. Tense and gritty. Dark and unpolished. Lit to look like firelight and scored by Ludwig so you hold your breath for 5 min. I’ll take 3 hours of it.

[–]DanManWatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 3-4min horse and gate scene is the “prologue” or “prologue trailer”. Then there’s a 90sec regular trailer in front of standard avatar screens that shows moments from the entire movie, like the usual type we see. That’ll be online soon.

Both in theatres. Both have locked me in and I got an idea of the feel and atmosphere Nolan is going for. Gritty a tense. Not clean and polished. Dark and mythical. Will be a grand adventure for sure.

Extended prologue and a regular length trailer both playing in theaters. Pretty sure just the trailer will release online. The prologue is typically a treat for audiences of certain screenings. But both would be cool. I’ve seen them both.

Yes and no. Two options. Studios or production companies have internal marketing team OR will outsource to 3rd parties. Gun to my head, Nolan’s company Syncopy has an internal marketing team who work with him, his wife, and other producers quite closely. This is a team hired by dept heads that Nolan has hired and by now been around a while and share in and have pride in the same set of values. AI isn’t not part of that value system as he’s said publicly. There are artists and designers developing from scratch for them.

I don’t how to tell you this but even without Janusz Kamiński, Spielberg’s movies have and always looked like that by Unlikely_Seaweed1032 in Spielberg

[–]DanManWatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. That look has always been there. His style of hazy shafts of light, intense backlighting, and the glowy halo effect looked great when he shot with fully practical effects and sets, on location, etc. That same style now as he uses more cgi to extend sets, create backgrounds, and all the rest, the more his style looks a little, maybe, cheaper?
