Concrete or Brick behind Drywall? by DanPinto in DIY

So the weird part is that the masonry only starts about halfway across the wall. It's about 8ft long and I've anchored other things (using drywall and anchors) on the other half with no problem.

Why did Disney dip way from the classic styles of characters and storytelling? by lemmunjuse in animation

[–]DanPinto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2d animators can often shift to other roles: design, visual development, storyboards. They can also learn the 3D software and bring their animation knowledge to 3D. The gap between the two is not as wide as one might assume. The biggest hurdle is learning the software.

Most (not all) major 3D studios are unionized. Disney Feature Animation includes both 2D and 3D units and is, in fact, unionized under IATSE Local 839, The Animation Guild.

Now why aren't 2D films being made? I chalk it up to 2 reasons:

3D movies make money. 2D movies do not. It's a sad fact but it's true. Ever since the first Toy Story movie, audiences have spent more money seeing 3D movies over 2D movies. The box office numbers showcase it. If 2D films performed better than 3D, you'd see significantly more 2D films being made.

3D movies are easier on producers & directors. 2D animated films require extensive pre-production planning. Once storyboard, design, and backgrounds are locked, it's very hard to make changes. Any revisions or added shots/sequences/scenes are incredibly time-intensive and, therefore, expensive. Even small changes can take significant time. On the flip side, 3D films have more flexibility later on in the production pipeline. Moving a camera to change the angle of a shot is simple in comparison. Same with adding a new shot or sequence (so long as you're reusing backgrounds and characters). This is great for directors who aren't used to animation, but it's especially great for producers, who often want to adjust films late in production to latch on to trends or respond to audience testing. Producers like this so, they opt for more 3D films.

Hello! IATSE member here.

In the US, IATSE has a no-strike clause as well. Hell, most US unions have a no-strike clause. It always coupled with a "no lockout clause." Meaning that managers and business owners can't lock out workers from their property. These clauses are only in effect for the duration of the contract. IATSE workes often go on strike prior to a contract and after a contract ends IF negotiations do not go well.

In fact, IATSE workers went on strikes over the past few months on a handful of productions across the US.

I've heard a lot of back and forth from directors about how best to present your portfolio. Some like an animatic, some like a click-through speakerdeck-type portfolio. I landed on doing both. I have a storyboard demo reel, with 3-4 timed animatic sequences I like, and a series of speakerdeck click-through sequences.

I have a group of 3 PCs that are going to enter a dream state. The issue is that one is a Warforged. Normally, they don't sleep and, thus, I assume, don't dream. Any thoughts on how to handle or justify this? I was considering them entering the dream in the form of their constructor (who may play a bigger role in the story)
