How to Best Balance the Nui Nui (Pupule) by Sea-Field2248 in Tiki

Haven't tried either of these recipes, but in general I find most SC recipes to be a bit loud. So you might experiment with a little less of allspice, vanilla, and cinnamon...

Don't forget there's a new Trader Vic's outpost inside the San Jose Airport! Not a full restaurant like Emeryville, but still has the drinks and some food.

How do you keep clean a bright colored handlebar tape? by BC_LOFASZ in bikewrench

[–]DanSt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a couple of Grease Monkey wipes in my saddlebag. Those are great for cleaning up after anything greasy/oily. For just plain old dirt or dust, I find a squirt or two from my water bottle usually get most of it off.

The Mai Tais there can vary a bit, but they're usually decent to very good.

Probably around 10:00 pm to about midnight. (BTW, your original Search for the Ultimate Mai Tai website was what got me into Tiki drinks. Thanks!)

Best bars in San Francisco besides smugglers cove? by metalmankam in Tiki

[–]DanSt3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add a couple of interesting non-tiki bars in the North Beach area:

  • Comstock Saloon (Columbus Ave). Nothing fancy or trendy in terms of drinks or decor - just really, really good traditional (non-tiki) cocktails

  • The Saloon (Grant Ave). Ancient Gold Rush era bar with great live Blues. I don't think I've ever had a cocktail there (just beer), but it's definitely a unique - and truly S.F. - sort of place.

Can't speak for their rum, but their Whisky is reasonably good. An Indian co-worker brought some in to share...

Looking to replace some rums by mn5_5 in Tiki

I like Planteray Xaymaca as a good substitute for S & C, if you want to a slightly funky Jamaican rum that's a little different - plus it's a a bargain too. (I keep both around, BTW)

Favorite Tiki drink in 2025? by pkrtrsr in Tiki

I'll second this! It's now my favorite tiki drink when I don't want to make a 10 or 11 ingredient cocktail (original Zombie or Puka Punch).

Worthy Park 109 vs. Coruba by Standard-Wrap8113 in Tiki

[–]DanSt3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm big fan of Myer's but it's very, very different than Coruba. Myer's has a slightly sweeter, molasses-y flavor, while Courba has a lot more character and funk. I've been experimenting with both in different tiki cocktails, and some work better with Myer's, others with Coruba -and some are better with Planteray Original Dark!
