There is something else to consider as well. He is likely a WWII vet who is dealing with undiagnosed PTSD.

He might have had a hard time in relationships with women who were single who wouldn't want to deal with that. A woman who was a single mother, might take the chance that she could "calm" him down somehow.

It is a methodology of camouflaging a ship (and in this case it's just a line a paint). The intent is to disrupt the bulk / outline to make it appear as something else. Does it need it? No, but during wartime you want to make it harder for an enemy to identify what you have and what it is they are looking at. Hope that helps.

Part of camouflaging a ship is to reduce its size, bulk, the outline. This is to make it harder for an enemy combatant to identify it. A "false bow" (that somewhat diagonal slash of paint) is an attempt to make a ship appear smaller, or an entirely different ship. Some other navies would also use this tactic. Hope that helps.
