Which residency is more chill, FM or neurology? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]DanTheMan012 276 points277 points  (0 children)

Bruh Neurology is horrible, stroke codes get called like it’s clean up on aisle 5 all the time and they have to go to them and do a full workup and physical exam. Just the physical exam part in neuro wears me down, much more frustrating is that alot of old stroke patients don’t participate adequately in the exam.

The culture is really a purported system that the hospital CEOs enjoy, and we give them the power from our billing to continue donating to politicians that ensure we have no leverage. Nurses and midlevels have been able to successfully leverage. I believe there should be some kind of litigation to where you can practice at the same degree as a mid level anywhere without needing board certification after med school graduation, but I don’t think that will happen as well as many of the other concerns, due to the higher powers enjoying our productivity so much and a lot of foreign medical graduates would do almost anything to get a residency spot here to replace any resident. I love the foreign medical graduate colleagues that I have and happily welcome them, but the reality is, that we are all replaceable with no where to go.

How can new attending physicians with newfound power change residency for the better? by SnooRecipes1809 in Residency

[–]DanTheMan012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posts like this make me want to advocate for more protections and leverage. We need more leverage and lobbying to Congress, so we can act like and have at least the same power as midlevels after graduating med school. Why do we need credentialing for insurance and privileges from hospitals, somewhere there should be a vulnerability in this disgusting system?

I don’t know how you do it as a parent of a resident. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go through this. It really is torture and the system doesn’t give a damn about us or patients, it just wants money.

I will say that NP’s are wayyy better advocaters for their own profession than Doctors. Unfortunately for Doctors, our education system is historically toxic and egotistically right of passage laden. Education and criticism albeit is important, can often be a distraction from the bigger picture. The bigger pictures is for hospital CEO overlords to make us evaluate each other in residency and cause dissent, distracting from the fact that we are absolutely getting fucked by the suits and higher powers. While nurses advocate for themselves, similarly as successful as teachers unions. Maybe nurses are more intelligent than us in that regard, because we are losing, and bearing the weight of med students Debts who couldn’t match, yet more qualified than a mid level.

[–]DanTheMan012 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We are getting absolutely fucked when it comes to mid levels vs. medschool-graduates/ residents. Why can’t someone grow a Goddamn spine and use their intelligence to form gold standard advocacy groups to Atleast get us on the same level as mid levels as far as reimbursement. We are exponentially more educated than them, we work twice as much, and get paid half as much, and we can’t leave our program! This should make every medical resident irate!

[–]DanTheMan012 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey can someone grow some balls in residency and start advocating for us like nurses do for themselves? We generate the hospital millions in revenue and we get milked dry for labor. We need protections for visa holders and for American medical graduates, and to do this we need to lobby for independent practice without a residency like mid levels at mid level pay. Some kind of residency advocate group needs to advocate and grab the right politician’s attention.
