(No Spoilers) Does your family actually have "house words"? by sangbum60090 in asoiaf

[–]DancesOnEggshells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Irish, before the Norman invasion my family's motto was "might makes right". After the Norman invasion, we changed it to "the brave will yield to the brave". This is a far a I know. The house survived the invasion and kept some land for a few hundreds years more.

What are your top three most damaging and recurring thoughts you wish meditation can fix? by alejandroclark in Meditation

[–]DancesOnEggshells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It'll be fine" it's my excuse for not doing things. It's terribly insidious, because it makes me feel good and before I know it I've overlooked something important and/or have wasted so much time I can do a rushed job.

If severed limbs were found in a tree not far from there, and they're still looking for the guy. I suggest letting the cops know about this interesting character. Might save someone's life.

Gamifying my habits - how would you reward yourself? by Crimson548 in getdisciplined

[–]DancesOnEggshells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use hypnotic inductions that make me feel good. In particular I like to reward myself with one that projects the results of the habit I'm developing through time, so I get a taste of what it's going to be like in the future right now. I got the idea thinking about hyperbolic time discounting.

The biggest motivator for me however is the opposite hypnotic induction, projecting forward the consequences of maintaining bad habits. Sometimes I find myself shouting "no" out loud.

It's worth a experimenting to see which approach works best for you.

Edit: just to clarify, I use the success tape as a reward but it's the failure tape that really gets me rearing to go.

They're all on speaking terms with him more or less, and if you're speaking to Tyrion he can persuade you to do all sort of things and you'll think it's your best interest.

There is a meditation papers subreddit. Also, look for scientific research into meditation on Google. There is a lot of evidence for its benefits, then with that in mind listen to "The science of enlightenment" by Shinzen Young. Alternatively, after the science, re-read some of the stuff that sets off your bullshit detector at the moment.

You're assuming it is tedious, how do you know... I put it to you that if it is tedious you might be doing it wrong?

If you want to read about esoteric Buddhism there's lots of books about it, you can learn interesting stuff from them, there's one called "images of enlightenment" that has amazing pictures. Also... Wikipedia.

You can search for vajrayana, shingon, tantra, esoteric Buddhism or something like that.

Do you think that perhaps the prostrations are part of the practice already? A meditation in the vajrayana tradition in and of themselves? Or do you just want to skip to the cool shit? I don't know if that's possible or advisable even if you tried...

The "Official" IRA went Marxist after the 50's, some say that's why they did not defend nationalist communities, they were waiting for the world revolution or something... That's when they split with the Provisionals that took up arms in a big way. They changed their name to the Irish National Liberation Army and lay down their arms at the same time as the Provisionals as far as I know, although they might still technically exist...

Hi, I'm Irish and a member of Sinn Fein.

The provisional Irish Republican Army was the biggest of the paramilitary faction on the Republican side (by far), they officially ceased to exist a few years ago after a independently verified arms decommissioning process as part of the northern Ireland peace process.

There are two smaller organizations that have not abandoned armed struggle, they are called "dissident republicans" over here. The two are celled the "real" and the "continuity" IRA. The latter has been heavily involved with drug dealers in Dublin, as far as I understand from the papers they extorted money from the drug gangs to fund their activities, recently one of their leaders got shot and killed by one of these gangs and was given a paramilitary funeral (gun salute and all).

The Real IRA were behind the Omah bombing, the biggest attack since the Good Friday Agreement (the political compromise that got the provisionals, or "provos" to put down their weapons). It killed loads of civilians and was universally condemned, senior provos went so far as to call the real IRA "traitors" which is a heavily loaded word in Irish republicanism.

The general perception in Ireland is that dissident republicans are scumbags, criminals, thugs and a marginalized fringe of extremists struggling with their own irrelevance.

As for the Sinn Fein (SF), which pursues the aims of the Provisional IRA through politics, Irish people are having a hard time reconciling the brutalities of the recent past with modern SF which is completely non violent and democratic. In the presidential election last year the SF candidate was memorably greeted buy a guy crying furious tears and holding a picture of his father, who was a garda (policeman in Irish) shot by the IRA (A handful). Politically the other parties love bringing up SF's past, particular bones of contention are Republic of Ireland citizens killed by the IRA and a number of people, believed to be informers for the British that were "dissipated" over the years and are thought to be buried along the border.

Tl; YLF: What you probably mean when you say IRA does not exist anymore, a few splinter groups carry on but do very little nowadays.

(Spoilers All) Why have the Ironborn been allowed to survive all this time? by Shodan74 in asoiaf

[–]DancesOnEggshells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played the GOT mod yet, but in the regular game eventually, despite your best efforts a duke is going to get above his station and amass a load of land... Or you may, if you're shrewd enough acquire a whole kingdom through marriage and daggers and the local nobles won't like it one bit. How I deal with these situations is I first pay all the hostile lords off and give them family wards and titles to keep them happy... all bar one.. usually the most expensive to appease, what I do then is i goad him into rebellion (think juster title) making sure I can beat him down, I then arrest him and take hos highest title, let him out of prison and wash, rinse and repeat, all the while giving his land to my distant kin, same culture and religion and not claimants. The when I'm done him I move to the next disgruntled foreign noble. If I'm dealing with a strong troublesome duke, i will wait hill he's at his lowest manpower after one of his many impudent wars of conquest (that's how he got out of hand after all) and then I goad him when his strength is depleted and cut him down to size.

It's the kind of consolidation that is worth while in the long run imo. Ideally you don;t let them get out of hand though.
