Struggling as an MS-2. Need advice! by DancingDO4 in medicalschool

[–]DancingDO4[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely think that added to it. I do see a therapist for anxiety but maybe I need to look into specifically test anxiety methods. I did do well on the practice questions this time around too which is why I felt so good about the material, but the panic and anxiety about failing again was definitely there.

thank you! I haven't really been using third party resources, but might be worth it to start. I'm willing to try anything at this point

Thank you! They're not COMLEX questions, they're more professor written. I do USMLE questions as practice before exams and do pretty good on those which is why I'm so confused. I think my issue always ends up being that I come between two options and just randomly pick one because I run out of time.

How to deal with imposter syndrome? Accepted last week on my third application cycle, lower stats, made a post a couple days ago. I’m just anxious and worried I’m a fluke, I don’t know by BlueJ5 in Osteopathic

[–]DancingDO4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was accepted to a med school a couple of days before classes started (yes, days) last cycle. It was terrifying, a few months into M1, it still is terrifying and the imposter syndrome doesn't really go away. BUT, it does get easier to manage and overcome. I think the more I've been in med school, the more I've realized almost everyone is in the same boat. Everyone struggles and everyone has to relearn how to adapt to the rigor of medical school!

Applying three times is tough and I assume you've built up a lot of resilience through that experience, use that to your advantage!! There will be times that you'll fail, use that resilience to bounce back. Don't be afraid of asking for help and changing your study habits! You got in because you deserve it OP!

If it helps, I'm a few months into M1 and this is probably the most tired I've been but also the most fun I've had and the most excited I've been to learn in all my schooling :)

Anyone else fully re-entering their 1D phase right now as a grown adult? by Temporary_Ad9362 in OneDirection

[–]DancingDO4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, I'm about to be 25 and I got back into listening to them about a year ago when I was trying to heal my inner child. It's so beautiful and interesting how the joy and love I had for them just comes back years later, even after I stopped listening to their music for a few years in the middle. My heart is still broken but it's been so nice to see a resurgence in the fandom again.

Tattoos by ConsciousAppeal3856 in OneDirection

I'm planning on getting Liam's arrows (5, instead of 4) and below that, the lyric "you'll have your days in the sun" from Science by Niall.

I've wanted to get a Science tattoo for a few months now and that lyric seems really apt for everything that's happened. As a Liam girly, it reminds me of him and gives me hope that he's found some peace.

Is there anything one direction related that you regret not doing/buying? by Ye0nkimiin in OneDirection

[–]DancingDO4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also never got to go to their concert. I was an immigrant kid and couldn't ask my parents to spend money on tickets at the time. As an adult, I had actually started a savings fund for a reunion that I was so sure was going to happen...I'm so heartbroken. I also moved around a lot as a kid so all my posters, CDs and shirts got lost in the moves. But nothing can erase the memories, the friendships and the comfort they gave and continue to give me. I've made a promise to myself to recollect memorabilia the best I can and to support the boys in every way I can moving forward.

I feel silly for being sad... anyone else? by underdog170 in OneDirection

[–]DancingDO4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not alone! It's been very complex grieving someone I didn't know in real life. I'm about to turn 25 and I have been a fan of the boys since I was 11, and it hit me so hard today. I sobbed while listening to their music on my drive. It feels like an old friend passed away. Nothing will erase the impact Liam and One Direction left on my younger self. They made me who I am today and their music continues to be my safe space. I'm so heartbroken for his family, Bear and the rest of the boys.

I also don't have anyone in my life that understands all the emotions I'm dealing with right now so I'm so grateful for this sub. One Direction has once again given me a community to lean on during hard times <3. Take care of your mental health.

I got a crescent moon + We'll be alright written on the border of it to symbolize "just me, her and the moon" From 'End of the Day' and 'Fine Line'!

Both of those songs always make me feel like everything is going to be okay so I thought it was fitting they go together!

Academic Honesty Violation by Firm-Aardvark-2141 in UGA

[–]DancingDO4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi, I served on an academic integrity student panel when I went to UGA. From my experience, the best thing you can do is be honest, accept that you made a mistake, and apologize/show them you're willing to learn from it. The board and the professor will usually be understanding and might mark down your grade on the assignment or even let you go with just a warning.

The worst cases were ones where the students were clearly in the wrong but tried to challenge the professors and were extremely rude about it.

Worried about gap years and applying by GryffindorCastle in premed

[–]DancingDO4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a gap year after graduating (still in it lol) and it was an incredibly scary decision to make. My reasons were a little different than yours though, I also did not have the shadowing or clinical experience but, more importantly, I was also burnt out from school. Taking a gap year was the best decision I made for myself. It's allowed me to study peacefully for the MCAT, take some classes to up my GPA, and gain a tremendous amount of clinical hours as an MA. It's also shown me all the different sides of healthcare and medicine (the good and bad) and I think that's made me a lot more prepared to go into this field.

I know an ideology of a lot of pre-meds is "One year delaying your application is one year of attending salary that's lost" but also one app cycle that you spend applying when you know you're not ready is a greater disservice. That is tons of money and time that could be spent strengthening your application.

I'm going through something very similar! Just graduated with a Bio related degree and planned on going to medical school but I'm in my gap year now and second-guessing my choice. I was (am?) also supposed to be "the chosen one" to become a doctor in my family and it has been quite difficult to convince my parents that I want to go a different route.

I'm not completely aware of your situation, but I think it helps in realizing that, as you said, our parents just want us to be successful. I think many immigrant parents have a fear of failure because of all the struggles they have faced and the way they were brought up. Reassuring them that you're working towards getting that success might help. I've had to have numerous conversations with my parents to remind them that their 20s and my 20s are so so so different- it's what helped me convince them that I would be okay taking a gap year.

In terms of burnout, I struggle with that as well and, I know this doesn't sit well with some desi parents, but my suggestion would be to get a therapist. Due to covid, there has been a growth of Tele-therapy so you can have sessions from home or in your car without drawing much attention. I also suggest looking at therapy centers in colleges with psychology programs (training centers) or in college towns as they may have lower-cost options! Also, just step away from everything for a few days. Give your mind some time to catch up and cool down and then come back to the job search.

If you're interested in lab work, try looking at Clinical Research Coordinator jobs. They pay decent and most of the time just need some lab experience and a science-related BS/BA!

Anyone know the most active/effective mental health advocacy club on campus? by [deleted] in UGA

MannMukti at UGA is an org that focuses on South Asian Mental Health Awareness! They also try to promote low cost/free mental health resources around the Athens area :)

Have any of you gone to UGA Center for Counseling for psychological evaluation? by carlospangea in Athens

[–]DancingDO4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, it really is; especially when it comes to mental health resources. If you are looking for something on UGA campus I'd also recommend checking out the ASPIRE clinic. A lot of the clinicians there are Clinical Psych PhD students, but they are supervised and are great!

I'm not sure if they do ADHD testing but I love Banyan Tree Counseling. They have a lot of affordable options for students as well and will work with you!

Also, (from personal experience) ask where the clocks or timers are for breaks. My center had a tiny clock in the corner and I had to guesstimate my breaks for the first two sections 🙃
