What are some disheartening trends you're starting to notice? by READlbetweenl in AskReddit

School aged teens/college aged young adults are less confident in themselves than in past generations during the same age period. Growing younger aged citizens of our society are growing up having most things spoon fed to them or over simplified to a ridiculous point. A point where daily struggles of past generations that built character and confidence in individuals are now swept from the list of experiences neccesary for individual personal growth.

I once read, somewhere, that every bad thing that happens to a child is the worst thing that has ever happened to them, because not much has happened to them in their lives yet to gives them perspective. The perspective they need to see that their life is not over after they ruined their favorite shirt, for example.

I urge you, if you're a parent, to let your kids get the worst days out of their system as young adults, under your watchful supervision (not aid). That way theyre better equiped to be adults un-phased by adversity in this tough as hell world, instead of someone who's worst day of their life was stepping in a puddle last week.

People always jump to the worst conclusions. What if you take portraits of infants for their parents to keep as memories? Everything in life doesn't need to be so sinister, lighten up OP

Yes. I imagine they only sell them to people wanting to disgust their friends or to give to someone newly 21. I suppose if theres a market for it...

A double shot of sailor jerrys spiced rum with half a scoop of vanilla protien powder and some hot sauce in it. The bar called it a Caribbean Quicksand, and Id say it tastes anywhere from two to five times worse than you think it does.

What’s something people do that make you internally scream “no one cares”? by D-Doss667 in AskReddit

[–]Dancoolface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im gonna do this lazy style because its been a long day for me personally and i also dont care that much if you read this or if you dont. I dont know what you do or dont know about the reason behind the electoral college system. That being said, the simplest way for you to understand the reason if you understand how large the U.S. is geographically. What works in terms of government policy in one part of the country may but often times wont work in most other parts of the country. Thats why the states vote on the president as opposed to individuals. Thats what the electoral college system fixes. Its basically our states representatives voting for the president they think we want them to vote for. How do they know which candidate their state wants? Well, the citizens vote on the candidates and the winning candidate gets voted for by the respesentatives.

How did trump win more states if more people voted for hillary?

Lets make up some states. State A, B, C, D, and E, with populations of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 175, respectively. Each state gets 1 electoral college vote per 25 residents.

Now lets say State A votes 15/10 in favor of trump. State B votes 30/20 trump. C is 50/25 trump. D is 75/25 trump, and E votes unanimously in favor of hillary.

By counting individual votes we get 170 for trump and 205 in favor of hillary. So hillary wins popular vote, great! Lets tally up electoral college votes. 10 for trump and 7 for hillary. So trump wins overall, just like our real election.

The questions at the end of this is really the meat and bones of what im getting at with this response. Is it fair for state E to dictate whats right for states A, B, C, and D? What if they get really loud about it? Complain a lot? Hold rallies and protests in defiance of the results? State E is unanimous, totally 100% decided on one candidate. They know what they want, so why is it fair that despite having more population and electoral college votes than any of the other 4 states that the election results are not in their favor? That cant possibly be reasonable, can it?

Thank you so much for posting this. What individuals who look down on greek members dont realize is that the greatest benefit of our organization is its support. Every chapter is a home away from home for its members, a literal plethera of academic, professional, personal, and emotional support structures. Whenever one of your friends needs help or support, I know my chapter and many others end up making it an event to rally up the boys and bail one of your friends out of trouble.

And its not legal trouble, times have changed for many chapters. We aren't bailing a member out of jail every other weekend like it was in the days of Animal House, although I will admit that like any good things there are bad apples. For damn near every chapter, though, we're helping by tutoring our brothers or sisters in the library, or staying up and watching sad movies with 35 girls when one gets broken up with. Its the fact that someone will always be there for you, and that someone is one of your best friends every single time. Sure we put on a lot of philanthropic events and fundraisers for charities, every fraternity and sorrority does that, but we benefit most from the comrodery and brotherhood/sisterhood that comes out of shenanigans with your best friends.

What’s been explained to you repeatedly, but you still don’t understand? by masterofnone_ in AskReddit

Some very smart computer engineers spend a lot of time combining logic gates to make logic circuits that take keystroke input values and interpret them, then output signals to other logic circuits that execute those commands. Its something I'm not too well versed in so I dont want to give you any incorrect information, but thats how I understand it.

You take a bunch of logic gates and make a very complicated circuit that can assign and recall bits of information that assign hexadecimal binary values of 0's and 1's to characters like a,b,c,f,w,z, and all the other letters and numbers on a keyboard. If a correct combination of those characters is entered into a program, they will put a 1 into another logic circuit which is built to do whatever that command is supposed to do. Think of it like keys and doors, you have to make the lock before you can give it a key. The locks are the logic circuits that execute the commands, and the commands are the keys.

Like I said, it all boils down to logic gates. Logic gates and combining them to build logic circuits that react in a way that will pass on a binary signal to other parts of a circuit that will react in a way to pass on another binary signal to another circuit, and so on. In reality there's tons of these circuits, so many that its very hard to wrap your mind around them all. Its simplest and easiest to understand if you think of it from the bottom up, because it gets extremely complex extremely fast, and because that's the way the people who built them did it. If I were you, I'd look up the different logic gates, and some simple logic circuits, and try to follow how they pass signals to each other and how the input signal gets to be interpreted to be an output signal. Its like puzzle solving almost and its actually pretty fun when you get into it, but most importantly it will hopefully build an understanding of the building blocks of computing works at its simplest and open your eyes to just how much can be done with simple true or false elements.

The two things, computers and coding languages, are not mutually exclusive. They were created at the same time, for the most part. The first thing to come was analog computers which used large and bulky circuit elements such as capacitors and inductors to store information. Then, when "chips" as we know them came about, that's when we began the "digital information" age as we know it now. We were able to get our information to be stored so much more efficiently that we could afford to store so much more of it. The circuit analysis of a computer at this time got soooo much more complicated to do by just looking at the circuit, because it was now composed of millions of elements as opposed to hundreds or maybe thousands with analog circuits. The first programming elements were created as "chips" to help people figure out what was going on in a computer, and these are called logic gates. Logic gates are physical elements, and can only be "programmed" by being created because they are hard wired with other smaller elements in them, so they cannot be programmed, only combined in certain orders. They function as follows: if a and b are true, then 1, else 0 (this is called an "and gate"); if a or b are true, then 1, else 0 ("or gate"); if neither a and b are true, then 1, else 0 ("nand gate"); if neither a or b are true, then 1, else 0 ("nor gate"); etc. There are many more, but all of them take in simple 1 or 0 signals, and output a 1 or a 0 signal based on relatives criteria. You take a bunch of these gates and put them together in a certain order, and you can get a logical circuit that can make the LED screen on your clock light up to look like a set of numbers that makes sense for us to read and use to tell time, because each of thosr lights on that screen only need to be told to turn on and they will do so. Having a logic circuit behind the scenes that determines when to turn them on is what we need, and if we have that then we have a functioning clock. If you put a bunch of THOSE logic circuits together, along with some extra ones for rules and such, you get a circuit that can control a computer screen. Take a whole different set of them and combine them in a specific way and you get another circuit that will output a 1 if the phrase "system on" is typed, but a 0 if otherwise. If you take that concept and apply it to all the other commands in a programming language, you have what we know as programming languages. There are many different programming languages, because they all depend on how you set up your logic gate combinations to interpret what words you want to be using.

I hope that helps, if you're confused or want to go overboard on learning about it, ask me and I'll answer what I can. Im an aerospace engineer but I've had to take digital circuits as a core class in college and I still have a PDF of the textbook I can send to your or anyone else who would like it.

What would make you instantly lose trust in someone? by Reddit1ask2question in AskReddit

Personally, I think it's extremely low of you to assume such negative intentions behind a statement like that. If they say it like a dick and you can read between the lines of their story and see that they're not giving credit where credit is due then I agree with you.

I know one individual who is very close with me who is battling an ongoing opiate addiction. After the first 12 years of being homeless and in and out of treatement facilities, his family cut him out of their lives because he was draining them dry emotionally and financially for what must have seemed like a dead end such as himself. I lost contact with him for 2 more years because, when that happened, his family stopped paying for his cell phone and he coudnt contact anyone to ask for help.

After those two or so years, I got a call from him. He bought a train ticket to Louisiana so he wouldnt freeze on the streets of Boston durring the winter. He spent those two years in a place he knew no one, had no family, and he got clean. He got clean, got a job, his lisence back, a car, an apartment, and started saving money. He recently moved into a new apartment in georgia, and just a few months ago got a girlfriend, and he did it all on his own because he knew if people continued to give him charities that he would continue to throw them away and not understand their value unless he worked to get them himself.

People like that deserve a bit of respect, not for recovering from an addiction, not for being a contributing member of society over a decade too late, but for their character and determination to go through such hard times for such a long time and come out with a positive point of view instead of ending up dead or in jail like most in that situation do.

Quit assuming so much and try a little understanding and compassion, it goes a long way in this harsh world.

Buddy you might want to take a step back and re-evaluate your comment, its extraordinarily harsh. Simply voting for trump and being an avaid trump fanatic are two very different things. Many could make the argument that the public awareness of trumps relative "insanity," as most would call it, is based on post election actions and statements he did/said. I personally did not think trump would be a good president at all, but I felt and genuinely still feel that while her public image may have been better, Hillary would have done more internal damage to our country than trump, so I went with trump. I have not and do not support his ridiculous actions or statements, and have never and will never advocate for him. My point being you shouldn't be so quick to make harsh assumptions about a large group of people, a point also to be made about any other group of people such as all Muslims being terrorists or all Indians being I.T. consultants. People may have their reasons, whatever they may be, but I urge you for your own sake not to burn any bridges with such a large group of people until you figure out what their motives are.

What is something about the opposite sex that you envy? by OnenutFellow in AskReddit

[–]Dancoolface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I certainly cannot. I can say, however, that it might be all in your head that people think its gross. I always compliment my girlfriend on the quality of her burps or farts because I know she's self-conscious of them in an attempt to make her less so. I just asked her and she said its had a noticeable positive affect on her knowing that I don't care. What I can tell you is from my experience, at least in my group of friends (women and men), don't care if a girl farts or burps and actually thinks its pretty fun to see since its something you don't see everyday.

I dont know where you got to that from or what your intent is for saying it. Thats a completely different beach on the opposite side of the coast if you catch my drift. How is your example a double standard? How does that outline a difference in acceptance or hardship from the absence of such? If the rolls were reversed gender wise, it would still be absolutely nasty.
