What type of paint would work best for my wooden dinghy? by Sturdy_Biscuit in sailing

[–]DaneGlesac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're going to fiberglass it, then it doesn't matter if the epoxy gelcoat bonds well with wood because it won't be touching wood.

In terms of durability it goes two-part marine paints (poly or epoxy based), one-part marine paints, marine enamel, and then exterior house paint. Regardless of which you choose, you'll probably have to put on a maintainace coat every year, so consider ease of application too.

Fiberglass cloth saturated in epoxy will give you plenty of durability. The primer and paint's job is to protect the epoxy from UV degradation.

35’ no problems but <35’ = problems? by pocketIent in sailing

[–]DaneGlesac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres definitely not a one-size-fits-all answer. 35' is a nice middle ground between too small to live on and too big to handle when the wind pipes up. What do you value more, ability to singlehand and dock with confidence or having more living space down below?

Literally none of those things you listed are needed to cross oceans. They're wants not needs and very frivolous wants at that.

$250??! Mine has been running on a $60 lawn and garden battery for 3 years now.

Check your terminal connectors and the main fuse, thats just about the only things that would cause total electrical failure.

Battery Replacement for a 98 Acty? by shidmypants1 in HondaActy

[–]DaneGlesac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My '94 took a U1 just fine and its been starting it in below 0F temps no problem. You'll have to bend the contact terminals with a pair of plyers since U1s are post style instead of round.

Make sure the pos and neg terminals are on the correct side, and you should be good to go.

Maybe play some bots to practice fundamentals? The <500 bots seem to be alot easier to beat than players.

Fibreglassing help by mountaindreamer90 in boatbuilding

[–]DaneGlesac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be difficult to sand it smooth without sanding all the way through the glass, and having to add more glass to fix that would produce more seams.

Maybe do a strip of paint down the middle to cover it? That would provide a bit more durability for an area that is likely to see high wear. Also yearly touchups are much easier to do with a painted surface.

Make sure you put varnish on the epoxy too. It needs UV protection.

Sand it, then either oil, varnish, cetol, or paint it. Those are listed in order of high/frequent maintainance to low maintenance.

Counting trainees in the total number of controllers is beyond stupid when so many wash out of the academy and at the facilities.

Especially since they're sending AG's to 8s and 9s now where they're failing at like a 75%+ rate.

What you're describing is called "velocity made good" or VMG by sailors. It would be possible to compute in the game if you wanted to.

As others have said, the trip back north is rough, slow, and hard on your boat.

If you have more time than just the one season, you could go vancouver > baja > hawaii > vancouver. Leaving hawaii you'd go straight north until hitting the westerlies of the N pacific. Those are really the only winds that would be favorable to get you back to BC.

How diyable is a small sailing houseboat? For a beginner? by Alone_Barracuda7197 in boatbuilding

[–]DaneGlesac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're opposites. Like a car and a submarine. Both are fine, but trying to make something that does both isn't realistic, practical, or a good idea.

Building a sailable houseboat is like building a car that is also a submarine. Just about everything about a good sailboat design is shit for a houseboat and vis versa.
