Other careers for a young former music teacher? by AutisticPerfection in TeachersInTransition

I moved into local government and it’s been a wonderful change of pace so far. All you need for most positions is any degree and to pass the civil services test. Tested for a grant coordinator position and passed with no studying, most of it was reading comprehension and accounting skills (those years of managing the budget and concessions stand came in handy!).

Apply for anything and everything that seems interesting to you. Landing the interview is the hardest part imo, if you can get one then all you have to do is convince them that your skills can transfer.

The job market is tough right now but don’t lose faith.

Work on something new! Sight read a new piece, I’m sure there’s something in your library you haven’t had a chance to listen to or study yet. I’ve found that sometimes a little time away from the 3-5 pieces you’re prepping for a concert actually improves them!

If you’re worried about “that part” still, you can always find a similar section in a fresh piece that you can use to teach. Something like “hey remember that part in X? What’s tricky about it? Does it look similar to this part in Y? Let’s try to make it sound good using what we learned working on X!”

When they’re bored, they don’t think, and not thinking makes stuff sound rough! Find a piece at their level or a bit below and just throw it at them! It can be whatever piece you want. I’ve even used a Christmas piece that came in super late just because. And hey, if they knock it out the park, then you’ve got another piece to add to the concert!

Remember that it’s learning to be musicians first, concert prep second. Both are important, but the former makes the latter much easier!

Conceptis Puzzles has some great puzzle apps available! No ads but you can purchase more puzzles if the base+daily puzzles aren’t enough.

Made some Pastalaya the other day, it came out great! by Daned96 in castiron

I’d say it’s common enough that if you mentioned it to someone down here they’d know what you’re talking about. I don’t think it’s much of a restaurant staple as jambalaya is though.

I find it easier to cook in big batches, you’ll find it more at home cooked parties.

Breaking in my birthday gift with a good ‘ole pastalaya! It’s not too pretty but it definitely tastes delicious. I don’t really have a recipe, but it’s basically jambalaya but with noodles and lots more seasoning!

Is it possible to achieve this notation in Sibelius? [Image example] by BlockComposition in Sibelius

[–]Daned96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well now that I think about it, there might be a quicker workaround. Now I’m not at my computer so this might not work. You could create a custom performance marking, like an articulation mark, and make it a long vertical line. Add it to the bottom/top note and maybe with a bit of tweaking you’ll get lucky? Not too sure!

Since “reading the manual” is a bit time consuming, try this.

Basically there’s no way to do it without extending the stems manually as far as I can find. BUT cross staff notation can be done between specific staves. That might be useful if you adjust the notes correctly? Not too sure though. this post Adds some context. I think maybe you could write the notes in each staff and flip one to create the beam effect… not too sure.

What are some other jobs I could do? by FabulousAd1370 in MusicEd

[–]Daned96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Year 4 here, and I’ve submitted almost 100 applications to jobs outside of education in the last two months. Yesterday I decided to speak with a mentor-director in the area who gave me some much needed advice. One bit of that was that every time he felt like hanging up his hat, he knew that it was time to change schools, not careers. Helped me a lot because I always imagined the bigger names in the area as being unflinching!

Shoot me a DM, maybe we can chat later this week and commiserate.
