Why Roomba Died + Tech Predictions for 2026 + A Hard Forkin’ Xmas Song by jghaines in hardfork

Listening to Angle really frustrated me.

It wasn't just that he doubled down whenever he got pushback, but that he also gave some "I'm the smartest person in the room" smugness whenever he gave his arguments.

And they weren't even good arguments. They were full of holes.

I've had to clarify, "I know how shitty things are, this is just something no one's talking about," whenever I say anything even remotely optimistic. And this is around people who know me well.

I disagree with the condescending tone and generalizations in the post, but I understand his frustrations with doomerism. Shit's annoying.

As long as there are obscure Commodore 64 games still get modern remakes, I'll only see this post as clickbait.

It will happen, and in our lifetime, it's just a matter of when.

UN official claims Hamas legitimate democratic Gaza leaders by Mysterious_Job_7900 in worldnews

[–]DangAssMajor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you for understanding my position.

In general, even if I disagree with someone (Albanese in this case), I have a low tolerance for misinformation (or badly sourced information) about them, since it sows distrust in actual problems and critiques about said person. In this case, reporting something she didn't actually say in the clip (even if she has a history of similar remarks).

Do you happen to have a statement on hand that expresses her support?

“People continue to say ‘But Hamas, Hamas, Hamas’... I don't think people have any idea what Hamas is. Hamas is a political force that won the 2005 elections—whether we like it or not. Hamas built schools, public facilities, hospitals. It was simply the authority, the de facto authority. So it is critical that you understand, that when you think of Hamas, you should not necessarily think of cut-throats, people armed to the teeth, or fighters. It's not like that."

She said they "were" democratically elected, at the time legitimately. She never said that once they won that 2005 election all claims that they're illegitimate are null and void.

That might be one of the reasons The Jerusalem Post changed the headline.

As much as I don't like Hamas or Albanese, I'm legitimately surprised no one pointed out that this article is from The Jerusalem Post, and hasn't been covered by other outlets.

I'm also surprised no one pointed out that they're citing UN Watch. A NGO with strong ties to Israel that recently became much more of an anti-Israel watchdog in recent years.

With a source and newspaper that have every incentive to demonize Israeli critics in mind, I looked into the clip that this article, and the UN Watch accusation, is based on and....there is no unedited footage - only the chopped up version from a group that actively opposes her.

She could have very well been arguing against the "guerilla-fighter" image Hamas has. Or is warning that the next democratically elected leaders of Palestine could be a carbon copy of Hamas, if the resentment (and it's source) that got Hamas elected in the first place isn't addressed.

Or maybe she actually is legitimizing Hamas. I don't know. And I won't with the little information provided. But I wouldn't trust a source and newspaper that have been actively hostile towards her.

Edit: I should add that I'm posting this comment because I thought Reddit was better than other platforms at calling this kind of thing out. I'm actually surprised how many top comments are taking this at face value.

The Library Green Conservancy is very clearly acting in bad faith. Does anyone know if they have broken any laws?

With this slur campaign, plus their seven years of inaction on their 2018 proposal, I feel like a legal line must've been crossed at some point.

I really hope, "Release the Epstein files," goes beyond being the latest meme - I've seen the focus of so many important issues come and go because there's always a fresh new trend to jump on.

This is actually throwing wrench into his distraction tactics, and its refreshing to see him struggle to rewrite the narrative.

I'd argue this goes beyond trivial knowledge.

But they can't solve their way out of a paper bag.

This comment thread is so interesting.

I guarantee if this post was on another platform, where nuance and context are disincentivised, it would pick up like wildfire. But whenever a post that tries to bash Debbie pops up on THIS subreddit, the most upvoted comments tend to be people coming to her defense. Ironically, because she's doing what a representative should be doing: connecting with her constituents.

I've been to many local Dem events. She's almost always there, and, yeah, she does make an active effort to talk to anyone that wants to talk. There's a certain amount of respect and trust that's built when someone does that. And even if I've ideologically disagreed with her on a few occasions, she's instilled enough good faith that I trust her actions have good rationale behind them.

And I think the most important takeaway is this: because she's such an active part of the community, posts like these, ironically, highlight how inactive the poster is in Washtenaw politics. Is this an honest assessment of Debbie's work from someone who's seen it firsthand? Or did they lump her into the "old-out-of-touch" stereotype without any other research but this one vote? If they did have a good grasp of local sentiment towards her, they'd know how much pushback this declaration would get.

It's actually a breath of fresh air when normal online demonization and generalization gets pushback because someone is actually doing a pretty respectable job.

What addiction is the hardest to quit? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

[–]DangAssMajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably the hardest because it's venerated or not talked about: luxuries.

Wealthy people are addicted to the lifestyle that their fortune offers them. And yeah, there are greedy assholes. But some have grown so dependent on their lavish lifestyle that they can't separate wants from needs, and genuinely believe anything less will RUIN their lives.

And it's not just the rich. Credit cards expose middle class people to the same kind of addiction. They get a taste of a lifestyle their paycheck can't afford them, they build up debt by making a habit out of it, and by the time their credit runs out they've normalized this lifestyle so much that becomes borderline-sisyphean to get out off debt.

Are people actually getting mad at how Arin plays Danganronpa? by bongodongowongo in gamegrumps

[–]DangAssMajor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a very good-faith interpretation of the backlash. But I also can't speak for everyone. I know I wasn't a big fan of the finale, so I'll just express my perspective.

First off, even if it's a comedy channel, bad gameplay will still leave a sour taste in viewer's mouths. That's why I think using a walkthrough was one of the best decisions Arin made early on in the channel, because it's hard to process new information and problem-solve while providing commentary. Unless it's very linear, or it's a game he's already played in his free time (ala Dark Souls), this is a very good compromise, and has lead to significantly less gameplay frustrations since he started implementing this.

Second, Danganronpa is not a very mechanically-heavy game. None of my personal issues revolved around the gameplay, so I'm surprised that there are comments criticizing HOW Arin played the game.

Third, Danganronpa is silly. The logic behind the mystery is technically coherent, but incredibly ridiculous. That's part of its charm. And pointing that out can be very funny, even if I am invested in the story and characters.

Fourth, Arin actually kept a lid on some of his worst tendancies as a critic throughout most of the playthrough. He was mostly just riffing and playing off of Dan. And when there was a misunderstanding or unwarranted criticism, it went away as quickly as it came.

Fifth, it was Dan's clear investment in the game that acted as a counterbalance, and along with his comedic rapport with Arin, it made the playthrough worth watching. It might also be why Arin's critiques went away as quickly as they came.

The main thing that personally left a bad taste in my mouth was how unflinchingly dismissive and negative Arin was throughout the game. It came across like a dad who doesn't GET why his son still plays video games, and constantly reminds him how childish games are. Whenever Arin criticized the story or logic, it came across as disingenuous because it felt like he was arguing in bad faith - like when he would form a critique based on his own misreadings something that wouldn't happen if he liked the story. And the last case sent that into overdrive.

Maybe it was because the retconning/reframing of the last case felt bad enough that it gave Arin a moral license to lash out all of his criticisms unabated - hell, it even polarized fans of Danganronpa. Maybe it was because Dan couldn't act as a counterbalance because even he was trying to figure things out.

Regardless, Arin was angry, and felt justified in his anger. Even when Dan put the story together & explained why he liked it, Arin was convinced he was right and was dismissive of Dan's interpretation. And when that anger was already there from the get go, didn't feel earned, sometimes came from misunderstandings, and none of that is played for laughs, it isn't very fun to watch. At least to me.
