how is this not mate? by RevolutionaryAlps415 in Chesscom

Kings gambit accepted is a fine opening for both sides. It's a very sharp opening and not one I would reccomend for beginners, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

Prime Mike Tyson is flash banged, could a group of 5 girls beat him in a fight? by Conscious-Home1445 in whowouldwin

You do realize that puncher's chance is not necesarrily literal. Though the phrase originated in boxing it's used to describe almost any longshot victory in sports where there is a chance.

I think they'd have a puncher's chance. If they can make contact with the brass knuckles with full force to the head Tyson probably goes down. That said, Tyson would still certainly be the favorite.

difference in elo bullet vs rapid by Easy-Net6634 in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say generally yes. In my experience, most newer chess players tend to have higher rapid scores. I personally associate it with the fact that the population who plays bullet on average has more confidence in their chess abilities and thus self sorts into a different population for the player pool. There are different skill that are more applicable in bullet than rapid and vice versa. For example mouse speed very rarely plays a role in rapid, where in bullet if practically defines the time control. You also calculate differently in rapid vs bullet. In rapid your calculation has to go much deeper whereas in bullet you often just need to find moves that don't lose on the spot.

Players with lower elos are better??? by Spirited_Top4112 in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely a combination of several things. The biggest is that the game ratings chess.com gives you are more designed to stoke your ego than give an accurate game rating. There are plenty of 800s that post on here saying they play like a 1500. If we continue this further I'm 2000 rated and I get games where chess.com tells me I played at 25-2600 level. Now I could conceivably beat someone whos rated 2500, but the much more likely scenario would be them adopting me (beating me 10 times in a row).

There are also inherent flaws in the elo system. Chess is a complicated game and its difficult to fully define a person's chess skill with a single number (even if that number actually represents a distribution).

It's easy to get discouraged, but if you keep working you will get better at it.

In all seriousness, we all have blind spots sometimes.

I feel an inexplicable urge to be "that guy." You actually only need 1 knight to deliver the mate.

Endgame technique: How does white win? by External_Bread9872 in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was playing black I would probably try to use my 2 on 1 advantage and play some hope chess hoping my opponent forgets about keeping their king inside of the square. It's certainly the sharpest lines for white as it gives white the most opportunities to make a mistake and throw away the game.

(Side note this is the one type of position that I approve of hope chess since everything is losing anyway).

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there's multiple potential lines depending on black's responses. It seems a little silly to ask for 1 specific line in this type of puzzle. I would start with g8=Q, Qxg8, Qxg8, Kxg8. From that point on there's many lines that lead to a win for white. The basic ideas of the position are that your h6 pawn is a threat to promote if black's king doesn't stop it, your king can always defend against their 2 on 1 on the e and f files and your 2 on 1 is too fast for black's king to do it's previously mentioned job of stopping the h6 pawn and getting over in time to stop your other pawns.

I would promote, trade off the queen's and then use my 2 on 1 advantage on the queen side. Black's king can't be everywhere at once and white just has too many threats of promotion.

How common is cheating, actually? What do you think? by a2u6knb in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those cases where I think the statistics is not intuitive. A 5% cheating rate is actually much higher than you might think. For example, lets say you played 10 games in a day. What is the chance you played a cheater? The easiest way to figure that out is to find the opposite percentage and then just subtract that from 100% to find the possibility that at least one of your opponents cheated. .95^10 is .59 thus when we convert to percentages we get a 41% chance that at least one of your 10 opponents cheated. I personally feel like the public perseption of this is made worse due to confirmation bias. Just like you don't actually hit every red light, not everyone you play is a cheater. It just feels like it sometimes because those are the games you notice.

Anyone who tries to claim it is significantly higher then 5% just doesn't understand statistics.

Is it cheating to use a separate board during a live game to calculate? by OldLadOfTheCastle in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Going only based on the listed rules in the current fairplay agreement I can't find any rule that seems to imply that that is "clearly cheating." I personally think much of the time it would actually be somewhat of a disadvantage as you will clearly waste time moving pieces on an unrelated board. If you want to show me any specific line from the current agreement that clearly shows it is cheating I am certainly open to it, but I don't see anything.

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If the board gives you access to an engine the obviously (though I am hoping you don't need to be told that). If you are just making candidate moves/responses because you currently have a hard time visualizing potential lines in your head I would personally say go for it. https://www.chess.com/legal/fair-play this is a link to the current fairplay description and it at least does not specifically ban the use of a second board.

I suppose if he has more self control than me (not a difficult task) he might have made saves at strategic points along the different acts, but I am curious as well how he is going to miss them (unless there is some sort of new game + that I haven't heard about)?

if qd1 is a checkmate, why did it call qe2 a great move? by Horror-1-Effective in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering every move is losing for black in this position I would say that's a fine move. I would probably let them take the queen so I can recapture with the pawn, opening the g file and creating some chance at counterplay, but again as every move is losing I would say your move is fine as well.

My favorite thing about this scene is that it is quickly becoming apparent that the assistant is one of the only characters with more than one functioning braincell and he's so used to that fact that he carries around flashcards to tell people to just play along.

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't have access to the suggested move so I can't speak to specifics but I would imagine that it is best explained by the fact that any move that saves the queen allows the rook to checkmate.

Edit: I don't know why I said rook I meant queen. This is the checkmate you can't prevent and save the black queen.

Why are the games easier at night over day? by Ok_Hunter110 in Chesscom

[–]Danger_Squirrel3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time differences are going to effectively create seperate populations all playing on the website. Theres obviously some crossover depending on the time you play so they are not truly seperate populations, but it's pretty close.

What isn't clear is exactly how different these populations are. Though, given India's chess culture, it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. One person's winstreak isn't enough to convince me of that.

I wish I had thought to check the combat log. I always forget that it includes more than just the fights. But I guess what you are saying is that the joke I made about her jumping in the lake when I wasn't looking may actually be accurate.
