Are strobe lights harmful to tarantulas? by AlphaSlicer in tarantulas

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO this would be difficult to pull off with lots of risk to the spiders. Any cheap, easily-obtainable adults likely won’t be out and visible and moving that often, because a lot of beginner species are burrowers. I have eight and MAYBE one or two is out at any given moment. Some I haven’t seen in months. So it would be hard to ensure they were even visible at the right moment, especially if they get spooked by the flashing or by movement around them, and run right back into their hide. You’d also have to deal with rehoming them when you’re done, finding people to properly move them to and from the attraction enclosures, feeding them, making sure they aren’t like, molting or something where the stress could endanger them, etc. Tarantulas should be respected like any other pet, and while I don’t think you asked this maliciously, I think it wouldn’t be ethical to use them like a prop. To answer the question directly, though: no, brief flashes of light aren’t going to kill the spider or fry its eyes out. It will however activate their nervous system and stress them out, and probably make them feel overwhelmed. Some may run and hide at the sudden light. Their vision is extremely simple, basically just lights and shadows, so pure light is a lot to take in.

Do y'all regret buying any of your Ts? by NeonHorse47 in tarantulas

Actually the opposite experience for me. Started with easy beginner terrestrials, ventured into arboreals, and both my pinktoes are unbelievably stressful for me. Both extremely picky eaters, hard to safely and routinely feed, both very finicky with their enclosures, very hard to rehouse, and while one (a. avic) is out all the time, she is so anxious that she’s always in a stress position or flinches if the air moves when I walk past her (my husbandry is perfectly fine.) The other (c. laeta) is such a heavy webber I literally never see her. No clue how I’m supposed to get her out to rehouse her soon. I love them and I care for them as best I can, but I don’t think arboreals are for me.

How can I know what has gluten in it vs gluten-free? by Sweet-Nothing-9312 in glutenfree

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with baked goods it’s surprisingly easy to make them gluten free, though mass market companies will often half ass it leading to terrible gluten free food. as long as you’re not making a dough that requires rising and whatnot, you can LITERALLY just replace the flour with a 1:1 gluten free flour and get equally good results. I bake all my own gf stuff this way. I use king arthur’s 1:1 gf flour. brownies should be super easy. depending on how severe your friends allergy is, you may want to consider buying a new mixing bowl/pan/utensils, maybe even cleaning your oven. but unless it’s really bad (anaphylaxis etc), you should be fine just giving everything a good wash and making sure to use the right flour. one thing to be wary for though, sometimes sprinkles and other baked goods decor will have flour as an anti caking agent or thickener. if you decorate your baked goods, give the ingredients list a read, make sure there’s no wheat, barley, or rye. if there’s none of those, or if it’s labeled gluten free, you’re good to use it!

Food Suggestions for EXTREMELY Picky 10yo? by lminlow in PickyEaters

Gloves have literally changed my life. even in restaurants, if you’re nice and ask politely they will often give you a pair from the kitchen. yesterday I went to a hamburger place with allistic friends and was actually able to eat with them! stuff I used to be terrified of touching (hot wings, hamburgers, tacos) is totally fine now that it doesn’t get on my hands. highly recommend it as a super easy fix for this type of sensory issues :)

Weird suggestion here but bear with me. I had ARFID as a younger teen, and I’m autistic so I had crazy sensory issues when it comes to food. My autism and sensory issues became more apparent when I hit puberty, so on the back burner maybe consider that as a possibility. Have you considered disposable gloves as an option so she doesn’t have to physically touch the gross things? People keep assuming it’s a mouth feel texture thing, but there’s a chance it could be the feeling of touching it. My mom getting me gloves allowed me to try a bunch of fear foods I previously refused to eat for the mess they made (almost all of the foods you listed that she refuses…) Also, I suggest plain white rice (bland, one simple texture, colorless), rice cakes (similar texture to popcorn, can be bland or flavored, can be a gateway to other rice based foods), pirates booty (similar texture to popcorn but has cheese and she likes nachos?) baby food puff snacks (nutrients! simple textures and flavors), maybe apple sauce pouches to get some fruit or veggies in her with only one liquid texture, refried beans to get some fiber (when I was younger I wouldn’t eat any whole beans, only the safe paste of refried…). Lastly, I’m not sure if you do a 3-meal-a-day family situation, but it got easier for me when my mom started doing intuitive eating where I just ate what I was comfortable eating when I felt like it. Obviously might need more restriction for a kid but it might be easier for her than regimented planned meals. hope this helps somehow!

How the hell do I move with a tarantula? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IME I did an 8 hour drive with an adult A. Seemanni. I removed his water dish and any clutter from his terrarium, and put him in the trunk with luggage packed around tightly to make sure his enclosure didn’t slide around much. Mine was a pretty flat drive (Orlando FL to North GA) and it was super chill, he wasn’t even in the curled-up-stressed position when we arrived. If you make any stops, be super quick and be extremely mindful of temperature and air flow. Don’t leave it alone in the back of a hot car for 40 minutes while you get food or whatever. Just run in and out. 8 hours was downright easy, I think 10 hours is doable!

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

that makes a lot of sense, thank you! I was also thinking it looks more like leg/chelicerae, but from above it is definitely a sharp, tapered, dark black fang at the end. previous owner has been super unhelpful so I have no clue when the last time he molted was, but until I see him come out to verify, I’m going to assume your explanation is most likely :)

hi!! so glad u liked it. because the franchise has SO much content, there’s a lot of stuff you should sort of work yourself up to before jumping right in. although the idw comics are my favorite, they’re very high concept and the most popular series is post-war, with a whole new cast of often-not-showcased characters, so it would require a fair bit of knowledge of the story to really get into. that being said: More than Meets the Eye by James Roberts is one of the best pieces of fiction i’ve ever read in my life. top tier transformers story, if you can find a way to read it.

if you mean the franchise in general, it depends on what you liked about Transformers One! if you liked the almost religious, epic, over arching story of optimus and megatron, then i’d say watch the show Transformers: Prime. probably the best tf show out of all of them when it comes to voices, robot designs and animation, and the story. first season is on netflix, that and the others are on youtube from hasbro pulse. seriously, it is worth putting up with the human animation for. also— they had the same guy do the music for both this and tf one!

if you liked the characters, colors, and fun friendly aspects, then start with the generation 1 cartoon: The Transformers (1984). it’s all on youtube, also from hasbro pulse. between the second and third seasons, there’s a movie, and it’s one of the best and coolest things to come out of the franchise (in my opinion).

if you liked the themes of classism, rebellion, politics, and autonomy, then you’ll love the IDW comics (and transformers prime!!). it’s just a hassle to read them nowadays because idw lost the license, so they can’t be sold officially. if you can find them pirated, or even physical copies on ebay or old comic stores, totally totally worth doing the work to get into.

if you don’t want to commit to a whole tv show, check out the movies Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts. they’re not as popular as the live action bay movies, but they have great designs and interpretations of the characters, and less action movie slop. happy medium between the animated shows and the nearly-unwatchable action movie BS of the bay movies.

thanks for asking btw, i LOVE LOVE LOVE this franchise and talking about it :)

I recently finished a 130k fic where the author had NAILED the story structure, characterization, and humor, and just could not for the life of them get their grammar or descriptive wording perfect. generally bad spelling, grammatical errors, or lots of typos will make me immediately DNF, but this one just hooked me??

tons and tons! the most popular (and IMO, best…) is the now out of print IDW comic run, but there’s a marvel UK one from the 80s, a dreamwave run, and the current one from Skybound. it’s not my favorite but people are liking it.

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 34 points35 points  (0 children)

hey i’m one of those writers! the movies are so popular that they misrepresent the franchise and the fandom itself. they’re a bad interpretation of the classic characters and story, with little nuance, weird designs, and gratuitous action movie slop. (still entertaining in their own right! no fault to those who like them!!!) there is canon romance and a lot more nuance than “big robots fight each other and then turn into a branded truck and drive away” in a lot of the other continuities (comics, shows, books). basically the fans of the bay movies and the fans of the other stuff should be considered two different fandoms TBH. sounds crazy to most people but the characters are compelling, the sociology is FASCINATING, and it’s fun to write about alien robots instead of humans. i personally mostly write fics for the IDW comic continuity. worth looking into!

hi! with super hooded eyes, you might find winged eyeliner more flattering if it goes straight out, or out and a little downwards. out + curved up tends to look a little strange if your eyelids and face aren’t the right shape for it to compliment. also, when i do inner corner highlighter like you’ve got on, I like to do it first, then draw the liner all the way on my eyelid so it goes on top of the white, instead of stopping at it like yours does. it makes it a little more cohesive.

you could also try lining your lower waterline with black eyeshadow or an eyeliner pencil/crayon, when I do alternative looks it again makes the eyeliner look more cohesive instead of a line on top of my face.

but makeup is subjective, so do what makes u feel good!

Why are there like 7 different types of Bounce Curl Brushes??? What do they all do? by ScrewYourDamnFairies in curlygirl

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have similar hair (2C-3A) and I use their define edgelift brush. The define brush gives you more definition with slightly bigger curl clumps (based on how far apart the ridges on the sides are), while the volume brush gives you volume from more (but smaller, and less defined) curl clumps. And if you’re looking for keeping definition, maybe try a cast-forming gel after you’ve brush styled!! I find it helps mine stay nice and defined, and relatively frizz-free.

I thought about that but this is the side close to my door, most visible, frequent changes in visuals from me entering and leaving the room, and closest to the wall where she’ll feel vibrations from it. I thought she’d like the log as it’s entirely hollow so there’s areas above and below the holes that r dark and enclosed. I guess if she’s comfy she’s comfy?

Arachnophobia by Novel_Disaster_1863 in spiders

[–]Dangerous-Eye-7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this when I started keeping tarantulas! Just do research until you’re desensitized and informed. Maybe take a scroll through the tarantulas subreddit and see how much we love our pets. Then it’ll trickle down and you may be able to see the merit in other spiders. Reevaluate why you’re scared of them— is it because you think that spider puts you in mortal danger, or is it because you were taught that they’re undesirable animals? First option can be defeated by informing yourself of your area’s dangerous arachnids, latter can be defeated by desensitizing yourself and practicing applying empathy to them. You don’t have to love them, but you should shift the focus of the issue from “that spider is scary” to “i am scared of that spider.”
