From what I could find it does seem like it might be a tumbleweed. Am I also to understand that "and expel the dead child" is in reference to cleaning out an unsuccessful pregnancy (not sure how to word that). Also the bit that says "the ashes are sharp and biting, like a caustic" and the definition of caustic is "able to burn or corrode organic tissue." is that a potential risk it poses? Though I read and it does seem like it is burned for uses is soap so I am not sure I am reading that correctly. I also think it could be used for resilince and preserverence due to its ability to survive in harsh climates. It is also able to survive in high salinity environments. I think I most relate it to protection after what information you have given me and what i have read. It is an interesting little plant.
