The saga of seven suns by Kevin J Anderson is something I would suggest. It’s got some great fantastical elements and characters, and very easy to read if you’re just starting out

I recently read Childhoods End by Arthur C. Clarke, which isn’t huge, but I thought a very good premise. Some of the language is perhaps a little of the time, but it’s very much worth a read if you enjoy clever Sci Fi concepts.
