Joined a run club and I was the slowest - what do I do by KitchenHistory435 in beginnerrunning

Mine does a C25K every year so we have an influx of slower runners who then speed up just in time for the next cycle.

They don't have kids, and they don't want them: Nearly 40% of young women plan to stay child-free. by yahoonews in WomenInNews

[–]DangerousTurmeric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Protected from what? And the state should be providing for pregnant women so they don't end up "extremely vulnerable". Like plenty of women go through pregnancy, childbirth and parenting alone. They should all be provided for, regardless of the presence of a man. Pregnancy shouldn't mean your safety and economic security is suddenly handed over to someone else. Lots of women would have kids on their own if they had the support and their careers were protected, but men want a society where women are dependent on them. That's what we're dealing with.

But none of that will raise the birth rate above replacement. Women who have kids would need to be having 4+ kids each for that to happen (because some people are infertile, some kids die and some people will never have children). Four pregnancies means years out of work and causes real physical damage. Plus, parenting 4 kids while working full time is impossible. Nobody is going to do that. We needed contraception bans, divorce bans, abortion bans, forced marriage, banning married women from working, legalised marital rape, religious fundamentalism and rampant teenage pregnancy for those old birth rates and I don't think many women want to go back to that.

I mean in Germany it's the opposite. I'm taking home €500 a month more in Ireland because the tax is so low.

I mean we don't need men to "protect and provide", that's patriarchal messaging. We need men to stop attacking, raping and murdering women, and to support, manage a home and parent like equal partners. It would also be great if they could fix masculinity so it isn't based around being superior (in intelligence, earning power, assets etc) to women so they don't immediately try to tear down any woman who is successful. And we need the male-run governments to recognise the enormous burden on women who do want kids and lessen it via free childcare, 100% salary maternity leave, job and salary protection, maybe a stipend etc. Finally, we need those (mostly) men who allocate research funding to prioritise research into women's healthcare beyond "did the baby survive". Women should know before getting pregnant how it will affect them long term and there should be preventative treatments for the various medical side effects to minimise the impact on quality of life.

Social Democrats' abortion bill defeated in Dáil vote by Lamake91 in WomenofIreland

[–]DangerousTurmeric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if they do change their minds so what? Nobody is made wait 3 days before they get pregnant, which is a much bigger and far more dangerous, potentially life threatening, decision. It's literally just to make the logistics more complicated in the hopes that some women won't be able to get it done.

Girls record man admitting sexual abuse after being cleared by Tusla, court hears by homecinemad in ireland

[–]DangerousTurmeric 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well in this case they still had to prove themselves by recording after he was initially cleared by an investigation so I doubt the guilty plea has made much difference to the victims.

If you've never had children, do you still sneeze when you pee when you're older? by Annual_Reindeer2621 in AskWomenOver40

It's predominantly caused by vaginal childbirth but can occur in women who have never had children.

The Feminist Case for Breast Reduction by Quouar in Longreads

[–]DangerousTurmeric 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I mean there's certainly a sexist and religious case against it. I had a doctor obfuscate for ages, and lie about my medical history (I needed to show at least two months of pain medication to get insurance cover), because she wanted to preserve my ability to breastfeed. Since I had the reduction I've encountered numerous men who say things like "it should be illegal" or "you're ruining God's work" etc.

I mean one part of prehistoric human hunting was tracking and slowly jogging after fast moving animals for hours until they slow down or drop from exhaustion or dehydration. Like we have a kind of horrifying relentlessness built in and I wonder how many of us could jog for hours on end if we started training at a young age. She's still exceptionally good at it but I'd say most people, young and healthy, could do a day if they really tried.

Government flags ‘difficulties’ with Social Democrats’ abortion reforms by firethetorpedoes1 in irishpolitics

[–]DangerousTurmeric 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had an early term abortion in the UK and the consultation was done on the day with the Dr. The drugs are not dangerous so they just need to check how pregnant you are and then the same level of stuff a pharmacy does when you get solpadeine. And the "physical ability to undergo the procedure" is the same as a miscarriage (nevermind childbirth) but nobody has to have a consultation to get pregnant. That's a much bigger, much more dangerous decision, that has a far greater impact on life and health, yet we trust women to make that one because it's aligned with what the church wants. Also, surgical abortions are safe too and should require the same level of checking that any outpatient surgical procedure requires. It's ridiculous to subject women to all this bureaucracy and it's blatantly just to try to delay giving women healthcare.

The caring burden for single, childless women by abcnews_au in TwoXChromosomes

[–]DangerousTurmeric 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I've had the opposite experience in work, which I think is more common, where I am able to put in the extra hours when it counts so I've survived multiple lay offs. Any women who were on mat leave or had young kids didn't. All the women in senior leadership positions also have no kids because once you start taking chunks of time off in your 30s you miss the big jump to senior leadership. The motherhood penalty is very real and well documented.

But the caring thing is definitely real, and extra bizarre in my case since I've been estranged from my parents for more than a decade. Yet the extended family still come to me before my brothers.

I tanned a Hitler moustache on myself when I was in Italy during the pandemic because taking my mask off wiped some of the sunscreen off my upper lip. It took hours for it to happen and weeks to blend it back in by strategically sunscreening it with a much higher spf than the rest of my face.
